@buffyunaTV, I liked the dolls Stacey McBride created. The fact that Mattel allowed her to create the dolls 'in our image' was a huge step in itself. So why bicker over their hair? I say this because I'm a long time collector of 'Black' Barbies.
'We' as a buying demographic have been ignored and this was a long time in coming. I say, 'Good for her'. Keep them coming. Because the better they sell, the more likely Mattel will incorporate them into future products.
@drgrbg3 o m g datz how i feel about the curley hair most brandz dat have a black person in the group there hair just hast too be curley : ( and datz just a sterio type becuzz some black peoplez hair doez not look like dat and i dont mind if the black dollz hair are curley az long az in a few collectionz there hair iz diffrent or there iz another black person in the group with straight hair yea : love :
Being an African-American man, who's an artist, I see the significants behind these black dolls. Growing up in the '70's, my younger cousin, that played with Barbie dolls, would take a white bath towel, put it over her head, and pretended that she was a white girl. Today, she would be proud. Keep doing what you're doing, Ms. Irby.
If you don't get the point ... why bother to comment? Did I say anywhere in my comment that my hair was like 'barbed wire'? As a matter of fact, my hair is long, below my shoulders and very thick, without chemicals. 'No offense.'
@drgrbg3 Oh I got your point, you likened natural black hair with barbed wire and I was just informing you that this is not the case, atleast for myself and other naturals I know.
Okay, to those of you complaining about the silky straight hair.. the world is full of different people, and so every black person on the planet is not going to have the "nappy" hair all the time. There's always someone to say, "Oh she has straight hair, they're disgracing our culture.." etc. And then there's someone else to say, "Oh she's black so she has to have kinky nappy hair, what they tryin to say?"
You can't please everyone with just three dolls people.
I managed to get all three from a Wal-mart. I got the Stylin Hair dolls because I did not want the little sisters in the package. I consider myself lucky to have got them.
It's sad. It's a D-O-L-L. Who says that your hair has to be like barb-wire in order to be truly black? That's ridiculous. Ever hear of a straightening comb? How about a relaxer? My mother sat on her hair and I'm sure she will tell you just how 'black' she is.
No matter the shade, we all jump through the same hurdles.
damn you must have some pubic hair on your head if it feels like barbed wire. No offense at all, im just sayin. I have curly afro hair and it is soft and manageable.
the idea is good but there is omething off again..... the silky straight hair! i wouldnt purchase this for my children in the future unless it had caorrse to curly textured hair cause they are mising the point that black women should be more proud of their own hair and what they were born with!
Good for her, about time; we have Disney Frog and Princess coming out in Dec and now these dolls that finally look more realistic, I already ordered all of them.
What I mean is every commercial is only the Black So in style dolls. It would be nice if they made them have barbie and her friends also in the commercial. It's sending the wrong message saying Barbie can be open minded and have many friends but these dolls only want to play with their own kind.
The same can be said of all of the commercials that only feature white barbie and friends with no black dolls to be found. I was told it's because they dont want to upset potential buyers in rural all white areas. It's sad, but race issues are still very real in 2010.
Are you serious??? Of course you are. Wow ... you must not know the Barbie history. MANY, MANY, MANY Barbie commercilas only have the white doll. I am happy to see the Black doll getting the same treatment.
im not african american, but i think its a good idea to make african american barbies because if little girls play with the regular barbies they might think that to be fabulous YOU HAD TO BE EXACTYLY LIKE BARBIE...
If my acting dream fails, i want to design barbies...or make my own doll :)
now they need a mexican line

So will these barbies have white friends? Barbie always has the token minority friend It's only fair these ones do to.

They already do- they have Barbie and all of her white friends!
