  • blue on blue. That was hit from above by a bomb!

  • @xfire7

Sorry to bust your bubble, but the Liberator that had it's port wing exploded was hit by flak, it is completely documented, even down to the identity of the person who filmed it.

Look up 'The Brief', (the name of the aircraft in question). It was based on Angur island, one of the Pulau group, at 07:01, you can see the tail markings of the Liberator B.S. it was part of.

The ball is in your court now.

  • My father was a Top-Turret Gunner and flew 20 missions stationed out of Horsham St. Faith England in the 458th Bombardment Group II. I also have his dairy which is unbelievable. The reason the B-17 had more footage is that they had room for a photographer as the B-24 had no extra room other then the 10 man crew; other than the on-board cameras on several planes that gathered data.

  • My Great Uncle-inlaw was a radio operator on "Hell From Heaven"Lost coming back from a raid on Iwo Jima 17 Jan45

    819 Bomb Squad 30th Group

  • @mulldune My great-uncle (killed 9-11-44) was with the 7AF, 30BG, 38BS also he was on the very first bombing of Iwo Jima. I have an information site/blog. I'll have to look up Hell from Heaven.

  • @TheLimbReaper I would like to check out your site.It would be nice to see a more info on the 30th.Please let me know what you find out. Thanks

  • @mulldune I sent a message to your mail.

  • the B-24 flew higher, farther, faster, and with a heavier bomb load than the B-17, yet the 17 got the publicity.

  • I think the publicity had more to do with the b-17 first getting stationed with the 8th AF in Britain at bases closer to more populated centers and crowding the later arriving 24s out to more remote bases. Plus there were a few other "intangibles."

  • The 17s could take a lot of damage though. The B-24 would catch fire easily if it took hits to the fuel tanks on the top of the fuselage.

  • actually the loads were typically the same. the b17 got more publicity because they were the first american bomber into germany and they took a bit of a beating to take out a b17.

  • Thanks for posting! My grandfather was a B24 Navigator in the 392nd BG out of Wendling. His plane was never named, or had distinctive enough markings to be picked out from any videos though.

  • Checkout a B-24 given the name "The Dragon and His Tail": BEST. NOSE ART. EVER.

  • Wish someone would do a movie about the B-24 raid on the Ploesti (Romania) oil fields in August, 1943. Those Liberators flew so low on that mission some came back with cornstalks stuck in the bomb bay doors!

  • My grandfather was on that raid. His comment was that the heat from the burning oil fields was unbearable.

  • Thanks for posting!

  • My Dad was a crew member on a B-25 Liberator; stationed in North Africa and Italy. He flew and completed 50 missions over Nazi held Europe. Thanks for posting this video.

  • Correction: A "B-24" not "25"

  • Yes the Mitchell B-25 is a completely different aircraft. It is also a medium bomber not a heavy bomber like the Consolidated B-24 Liberator.

  • On another note the B-25 is what was launched from the Hornet to bomb Tokyo after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

  • I appreciate you posting this footage on here, it's all too often that we hear liberal people say how evil we were to bomb the Nazis, but when you look at it happen, you get a realization of what they're bombing, and what they're bombing, needed to be taken out! Fascist killers from Germany.

  • That's insane! This is a bumper sticker on my truck, "If you can read this thank a teacher. If you can read this in english, thank a Vet." 'Nuff said! Thanks to all vets!

  • @jpxpert Yeah, while you're singing "Battle Hymn of the Republic" to yourself and focused on Fascists, let's try not to forget the few hundred thousand woman and children killed during the carpet-bombing raids, just to keep things in perspective.

  • @bellier20 Lol, dude I posted that comment 2 years ago. My political views are a lot more mild now. Quite honestly I was at that time something of an American nationalist (slightly ludicrous, since the national identity is so loosely defined). Now I am more a Pan-Balkan idealist. :) (no lie)

  • @jpxpert You went all Pan-Balkan on us?!?!?

  • @bellier20 Pretty much, lol. It's the Bulgarian blood.

  • Thanks , how can these boys be forgoten ,

they come twice in the century, to help my country and give liberty to my parents.

  • IMO it's the sad state of mind of the socialists in the US and their never ending efforts to belittle, demoralize and eventually do away with the Armed Services.

  • What ever happened to 5000? Would be interesting to find out.
