  • Too bad the Calypso is just a rusted hulk right now. Hope the current owners restore her.

  • The day John died was truly a sad one. This was always my favorite John Denver song and it displays the tremendous vocal range he had.

  • John Denver sang some of the most beautiful songs I ever heard.

  • Hell, I am not a biologist, I'm a propulsion engineer. It would have been an honor to maintain Calypso's engine room. =Stefan=

  • A true artist where have they all gone.

  • An amazing song by John Denver and thank you for singing it Jacques Cousteau is my hero as well he got me intrested in Ocean life by his books and shows Im forever grateful to him and John Denver for there inspiration.

  • Rest In Peace, Good Man, Environmentalist, and my hero

  • what a beautiful soul and ironic he died here in my state near the Monterey Coast a few hours from where I live, I was so shocked when I heard the news on the radio. This is one of his best songs, he has so many but I loved this one cus I have always loved the Ocean. R.I.P. John, you are missed xox

  • Just has the pleasure of finding healing at the Sanctuary in Aspen that they made for John....he will always be an incredible, singer, songwriter, and man. His music touched millions, one of which was me. And he will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

    E.L.R.

  • miss you

  • Think about how fortunate we all are to have had these two inspirational geniuses together on planet earth in the 20th century. If you watched this video, then I know you too are so thankful for their continued presence in our hearts. No two people have been a greater influence in my life. John's music, and Jacque Cousteau's sea have been the soul of my life. Thanks to both of you, forever.

  • wow!!

  • @dimpledick3inch Idiot ! It's an alias ! She's american an her real name is Deborah Scheer. She is in no way related to Captain Cousteau !

  • awesome thank you! 5 stars and faved ♥ love John forever!

  • The view at 5:07. For a second I thought it was a whaling boat.

  • An amazing man. I also grew up watching him and his adventures. The things the man gave us just boggles the mind. You will be forever loved and respected Captain.

    Fair seas to you.

  • that's jacques in the red cap at 5:14 !

  • i love this song!

i used to watch jacques cousteau's shows when i was a kid growing up! so cool ! :)

  • Is this really how you've learned to talk to people who disagree with you? People who aren't threatened by others' differing opinions don't respond the way you do, even if that other person may be wrong. You may not believe it now, but trust me, it's just not cool.

  • dimple......man you are so wrong and just a PIA.

  • You should check your information before you post trash about someone. Desiree Cousteau is not even related to Jacquese. You should be ashamed of yourself for posting this filth.

  • Who cares about their personal lives! Good grief just enjoy what gifts they gave us and forget the personal stuff. Not like it effects any of us unless you are somehow related to them. I know I personally don't care about their personal life. I will always enjoy seeing videos of John and the Captain for the rest of my life.

  • Easy to say - the good ship Calypso sat rusting - after being sunk in China in 1996 - towed back to France - and left tied to a harbor until the family got everything figured out!!

The Denver family had to sell his house in Starwood to pay back taxes - only to find 3 years later - that the taxes were already paid!! The house was lost!!!

IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE FAMOUS - MAKE A WILL!!!!

  • Each time I've heard this song thousands of times over the years, I still get chills and tear up. Thanks for the beautiful video and for sharing it.

  • Cousteau and Denver were quite the same - both died in 1997 - both married twice and had children with both wives - and both left a mess - no will!!!!

  • "Both left a mess"? Both left us with the gift of their contribution to humanity and a global understanding of peace and harmony.

  • Both left businesses in tatters - and Cousteau even had children with his girlfriend - that he later married AFTER his wife died!!!

They left us with many great and wonderful things - but left their families nearly destroyed - and Calypso - dug un and floating - and a junk barge!!!

  • sad but true mate! I still hold me heart out tae both o em! They "Together" showed their Souls!

    I miss "Jacque and John!"

  • I love this song, John Denver wrote so many positive songs that celebrate life, Jacques Cousteau was a hero to me and I often wonder why we are wasting our time in space exploration when we must explore this planet, oceans and seas hold the answers to our past and our future.

  • Comment removed

  • WRONG!

He bought the plane as it was.

FAA has since required a standard placement for the fuel switching valves.

  • soooo what ...your point is? you must still enjoy his heart felt music...why would you listen? wish there was more...I am certain he felt what he sang or it would be very difficult to interpret..; ) shame on you.

  • Not really - manual fuel switches are no longer manufactured by anyone - automatic switches became the same cost - so why have them???

Also since it was an "experimental" plane - NOT manufactured on an assembly line - the FAA can only make suggestions - they cannot make ANYTHING required on an experimental plane!!!

  • He was a bit of a nut but I loved his music. It was a big part of my childhood. he is missed for sure.

  • I remember seeing THIS video on TV. Thanks so much for putting it on youtube. Sweet.

Saw Denver live three times. Awesome.

Never got to meet Cousteau. Sad.

  • Both guys great memories of the 70's

  • Great song for, both, greats men.

  • Doesn't the world suck without John and Jacques ??

  • i think it is still the same, GREAT.

  • There is always going to be

    a cowards word, on u-tube'

  • im speaking of turdfuck1-

may death take its time with you,

    slow and painful '

  • It does.

  • God bless John and Jacque, they were an influence on me as a child. I have passed there love for the earth on to my own kids. Thank you

  • Talk about regrets in life..........I was within 10' of John Denver for about 20 seconds and didn't take the opportunity to look him in the eye and say "Thanks John for your music."

Will always kick myself for that

  • God Bless Captain Cousteau and The Crew of the valiant ship Calypso. They really taught us what was really important. and John Denver for coming up with the song to salute them with

  • Jacques Cousteau and John Denver truly understood what an amazing, special, fragile planet this is and more than just about anyone else, helped people understand that we need to change our ways to prevent irreparable damage to our world and ourselves. They were ahead of their times.

  • I couldn't agree more, both of these men were far ahead of their time. I remember in the 1980s Jacques was 80 something years old and set sail on a multi year voyage called something the "The Rediscovery of the World"

  • It's just amazing and makes you kind of chuckle when you find out the story behind some of your most favorite songs and how and when they were put together. He figured out the remainder of the song on his way back from skiing. That's one guy that was (and actually still is) one of my most favorite singers of all time. God Bless you, John. You are missed.

  • indeed, God Bless John Denver.

  • john denver experience

  • In the spirit of fun, this may be funny, but to those of us who respect Jacques Cousteau and his impact on us all and for giving us an awareness of just how fragile the earth and the oceans are, shame on you! You obviously have no idea who Cousteau and his sons are. Look them up and realize what a gift they were, and still are, in the case of Jean Michel, who carries on his fathers' work. With all due respect to you, dfarm...

  • Lighten up Francis. That was funny.

  • Thank you John Denver, for all your beautiful songs !!

  • October 12, 1997 R.I.P. We miss you John! We will never forget your music or your beautiful voice, nor the things you did for our planet!

  • John Denver loved music and loved the planet. He left behind a wonderful legacy that we can listen to until eternity. Of how many of us can that be said. He was taken from us far too soon.

  • I've always loved watching Jacques Cousteau. LOVE this SONG

  • Your Biggest fan!! Me age 37....living in New Mexico, lived in Colordo from 1993 to 2004. Miss you and love you!!

  • Two different worlds, two dedicated and uniquely talented men...brought together in this clip. It's so beautiful it is almost incandescent.

    Thanks mrmanock for posting this!

  • Yes its is interesting how some people who obviously have an ability to draw from different soureces at an attempt at humor are really so unfunny...at last make us laugh guys..great song BTW

  • I'm a captain of a large private yacht... The two men who have captured the essence of life on the ocean were John Denver with this song... and Jimmy Buffett.... with his many songs of the ocean. Sail on John Denver.... and God Bless you Jimmy!!

  • this man was a differant person in the world of music and a friend to me we miss you john and think of you all the time xxxx

  • I remember seeing Jacque Cousteau on the David Letterman Show about year or two before he died.Coustaeu had come on the show to talk about serious environmental problems, Letterman was trying his usual silly banter, Coustaeu just gave him this fuck you look and Ltterman reversed his approach. Great man and a great song.

  • Afraid of birds!? What are you smoking!? John Denver was not afraid of birds! Get a hobby other than spreading stupid rumors about talented deceased people! He loved ALL animals.. and he didn't STUFF them!

  • The 'missing head' thing is BS! GEEZ! The purest of souls and the most beautiful voices and this is what you say about him! His body was burned, but his head was still there! They said they ID'd him by dental records.. how could they do that without his head!? He was creamated with his guitar. I love John Denver, never will be such a talent as he was.

  • i read in a paper years ago about johns father flew 4 the airforce and he did not like the plane john flew said it had 2many falts

  • i read in a paper years ago about johns father flew 4 the airforce and he did not like the plane john flew said it had 2many falts

  • I heard that when they recovered John Denver's body, he was decapitated, and they never found his head-has anyone else heard this? Not making fun of him or his untimely death-im 45 years old and grew up as a john Denver fan

  • I did not hear that but I am sure we could google it to find out for sure. Either way it's a terrible tragedy but at least he was doing what he loves. He spirit is now free and lives on.

  • Positive identification after many hours off his fingerprints only. No mention of anything as you stated. On Wikepedia they have the entire police report.

  • John was a great artist. He is surely missed. Just imagine the music we would have today if he was alive.

  • magic

  • Boy some of you people sure get untracked quickly. Some of you must have sat up all night trying to be this clever. Talking about snow...birds..neil diamond..etc. Try and focus on the real theme here. Appreciate the quality of a great song by a man who expressed it better than anyone else probably could. Thanks for this video post mrmanok

  • I love this song. It was thanks to my mother that I discovered John Denver and his music. We used to listen to her vinyls together and that was a great feeling. Now that she is not here, I still can get that feeling, even stronger, whenever I listen to songs like Calypso.

Thank you so much for sharing.:-)

  • I know exactly what you are saying, it is the same for me and my grandmother.

  • I am sad to tell you this: no phantom bird approached me in the night. However I am pleased to report that 2 hookers DID! It was pretty hot. I love dreams like that. I was in Honolulu last year at this time. Lots of Asian girls. They are so beautiful. Well, if I see your false bird I'll let ya know. Mybe your unexpressed fear of birds is the reason you have idolized and empowered the savenger osprey to be your guide in life. The truth finally emerges. I'm with ya, brutha!

  • I am truly sorry that you have to pay for it!! I feel your pain for being so low. (And lonely). Kimo is much more subtle than that! Also, remember, he is forbidden to do physical harm. (So far). Pleasant dreams. =Stefan=

  • Fixing to snow here. Neil also hated snow, especially on trees. I like Neil Diamond so much that in his honor I chopped 3 trees down yesterday and burned them to ash. He would've liked that.

  • Thank you John Denver, for all your beautiful songs !!

What a tragic end !!! Your memory will live on.

  • an inspirational song and John sings it beautiful

talk about a few good men

  • What a talent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • love the video, JD ace.

  • Awesome song from a great singer, find this clip on the dvd "John Denver A Portrait" with other vid clips about his other songs!Lucky to see him in his London concert before he died,R.I.P

  • I miss John Denver. :(

  • Me too. :(

  • it is his very best song ever.

  • It's hard to watch this and not be filled with intense emotion, a life (two lives) so much greater than most will ever know.

  • It was not suicide, duh. There was also more to it than where the fuel switch was located. JD would have been a strong voice for PEACE, against the powers who were planning a devastating war in the middle east. He would not be the first to have his aircraft sabotages. Reference Senator Wellstone. The only senator who was going to fight the warmongers. So many noble and good have fallen to the warmongers throughout history.

  • Two inspirational people in my very young life,John Denver and Jacques Cousteau. Its a shame there arent more like them but plenty of cowards to criticise their achievements in improving our understanding of our world and trying to make it a friendlier place.

The calyso is being repaired by the cousteau society see cousteau dot org

    thanks for sharing the clip

  • All we can do is look for the inspirational people who we hope will follow in their footsteps. I doubt, however, that those up and coming countries like China, who are fast becomming a major world economy, will listen as they seem to have little regard to the impact of their actions. I suspect the west having, made all the mistakes, will now tell them to alter their course but I don't think it will make much difference. It may be too late anyway!! Sorry I'm normally an optimistic at heart.

  • Caypso is not gone. I saw her at La Rochelle four months ago looking very bad but now she is out of the water in Concarneau ship yard and ready for a rebirth. Supporting the Custeau Society will probably help now.

  • Talk about carriers and whatever, Calypso was the most valuable ship that ever existed. AND NOW SHE'S GONE.

  • Jacques Cousteau brought us something we never saw before and was instrumential in creating the scuba gear we use today. He is more an adventurer than a showman such as the crocodile hunter. They both were truly heros in their fields. Have you looked to see what is on TV now. BS and more of it...The under sea world could bring CLASS back into tv so kids and adults a like can learn there is something more than video games.

  • John Denver went to TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY for a short time leaving to pursue other avenues. He was a free spirit as such and while living in Colorado and his wife somehow drifted apart. She built her house in full view of John's house with a picture window and pranced around with her lover in full view to drive John Denver crazy. Dispite his life he was interested in what the earth and nature can bring you. John Denver he is less plastic than todays heros or showman.

  • You got it right, drummerkid. John Denver was one of the most transparent people of modern times, which is precisely why many people loved him and some resented him. You knew exactly where he stood, and not everyone liked where he stood.

This interview is classic -- thanks to mrmanok for posting it! It illustrates just what kind of person he was.

  • ... and John LOVED his family (in interviews he includes them in everything) he loved the earth and most of all writing songs. John wasn't into it for the popularity of the charts. He was in it to spread a message of love and peace. He was involved in too many good causes to commit suicide ...so on that note...educate yourself before making dumbass remarks. Have a nice day !

  • riverbear16 : If you took one minute out of your long hectic day of judging people as if you knew them you would notice the Jacques Cousteau foundation lives on even after his death and is stronger than ever....

  • Dude, you are a complete idiot.

  • Cousteau was fraud as Scientist wnd-be a merchant. Denver a coward that kill him self because fell from the bill board.

  • harsh statments. Best hope you're right. If you are then you are. If not you are an asshole plain and simple.

  • Ok let's take "The Cousteau Life Aquatic" ego trips and compeer with Valerie Bertinelli or Robert Ballard. Not estrangers to the cameras, but the science it's real in all their films. Now lest take the Crocodile Hunter, he was a showman like Cousteau no scientists, but he never pretend been any sing else.

    J. Denver. What a waist of talent because I really like his music thus is how I found this video-clip.

Cousteau is no were to be see in cable! Don't you wonder?

  • I really wonder where you learned to write the English language! Your statements are pure speculation. You are like many who talk parts of lyrics or word written out of context and try to make something else out of them. You are a conspiracy theorist at best. And your statements about Cousteau are totally unfounded. The man was involved in inventing much of what is used today for scientific exploration. His was a platform for much of the exploration that occurred of the world oceans.

  • riverBear;

    You are a sad person

  • His plane ran out of gas. What a horrible thing to say.

  • John Denver oh well sorry to sad you with my narrow mind portrait of him and Cousteau.

Don't judge me for what I write judge me for what I do, and I haven do nothing to be ashind or concern so far in my life.

His Plane didn't runt out of gas regales of you source. NTBS Controlled fly to the ground "Sea", it is nothing but a suicide. Lessen to his lyrics and you wild fine the clue.

  • Susandowser

"I'm already so lonely I like to die" Living in a jet plane J.D.

"Let me died in your arms" Annie's J.D. and list go on.

He probably had a chemical imbalance that led to a deep depression. The sad part is that his live saver was at a finger tip, but back then very few people now how to help.

  • i would liketo point out that let me die in your arms is not about suicide its about wanting to spend his life with her( his wife) kinda the opposite of suicide

  • As far as John D. He was an acomplished multi engine Jet rated pilot, that died in an experimental kit plane he built, it wouldn't exactly be the 1st time a A1 pilot such as himself died in an plane. His priorities changed from singer to protecting the enviroment, it was Not a suicide.

What have You acomplished in this world so far?? Besides wasteing our oxygen...

  • Dav, he was not jet qualified. He did not build that ship, himself. He was not "Multi-qualified". Who am I, noboddy special. Just his A@P. I hated that ship! I did not trust it. I wanted him to fly a U206W. Hell of a way to be vindicated. Ahh, hell, who cares??? =Stefan=

  • A pilot with over 2,700 hours of experience, Denver had multiengine, instrument, and Learjet type ratings. He had recently purchased the Long-EZ aircraft and had taken a half-hour checkout flight with the aircraft the day before the accident. The NTSB cited Denver's unfamiliarity with the aircraft and his failure to have the aircraft refueled as causal factors in the accident.

  • Dav, That ship WAS refueled. It had passed it's annual. You know what you know, I know what I know! Happy New Year!.

  • And Dav, this is recent info I recieved,The FAA had revoked his certificate. He should not have been in that cockpit. If I knew that, I would have decked him. =Stefan=

  • people go through peaks and valleys in their lives, not anyone has always on a even keel, even if john had mood swings, that dosen't mean he was ready to die, although after stopped recording, that was depressing, i am sure...

  • ...I hear what you say...it was a rather simple thing for him to access the extra fuel he had on board...and I can see why someone might think he took his own life...he was not as "transparent" a man as some say...John was a depressive...why didn't anyone see the transparency in that?...yet I don't believe it was a suicide...I believe it was just...an unfortunate oversight...on his part...and he was down before he could make his correction...the world lost a classy man when he left us...

  • rivervear16 show some respect what you have said so far is bullshit it is clear you know nothing of John Denver i read up on the plane and it was the location of the fuel switch that made the plane go down he was switching to the 2nd ful line when the plane went down so get your facts right b4 saying harmful things that is not true

  • All the read flags where there and no one around him seen to noticed.

I very much love his lyrics and the free spirit of songs, it was tragic and a waist of talent. Any how he still around energy can't be destroyed or transformed. The Ferrous never got a live after dead but we still talking about them. The Glass is half empty or half full.

    Have nice day.

  • No, Susan, his plane did not run out of gas. His on line tank ran out. The fuel selector was behind his left torso. He had plenty of fuel. He just couldn't get to it. I know that plane. I refuse to work on it.=Stefan=

  • River, Cousteau had pioneered and invented almost ALL of the diving gear in use. Where do you get your info? As for John killing himself, that plane failed. I did not want him to fly it, that morning. I had a U206W ready for him. You call John Denver a coward, I will call you out! Let's see who the coward is. I dare you to even talk to me!!! But I think that you won't. =Stefan=

  • You might be interested to know that John, like Neil Diamond, was deathly afraid of birds. The song Calypso is about the quest for a place on earth free of vile birds. Nice song.

  • You are wrong about the reason his plane crashed. Some migrating geese flew into his propellers and stalled the engines. Ironic, isn't it. He hated and feared birds...and trees.

  • Donos, I guess you know better than I. Except for one thing. You said propellors, plural. That ship only had ONE. What other things you know are a fallacy?? Reading your posts, everyone fears birds. Maybe it is just you!! =Stefan=

  • I do not have the technical knowledge so I am not privy to the lingo. I am talking about the blades of the propellers. Poor John. The awful irony of being killed by the birds he feared and plunging into the trees that he hated, must have been worthy of a novel.

  • Dono, it was a three bladed, mini prop. I know that ship, intimately.(I'm a certificated aircraft technician). My question is, "What the hell is your problem with birds???" No normal person fears birds as I percieve you to be. What happened, my friend??? Talk to me! I welcome you to go side line. Just, don't suffer. =Stefan=

  • The fear of birds is not mine. I'm just reporting the facts. I like birds! They are best fried but I enjoy stuffing a pheasant breast with black beans and spices then wrapping in wax paper. Bake at 350 for 35 minutes or so and serve with corn and rice.

  • Hey, dono, that sounds like a good recipe. I'd love to try it. But one problem. We don't have pheasant in Hawai'i. Bye the way, Kimo want's to visit you tonight. He promised me he will not do you physical harm. But, I can't control what HE does to your dreams. Ospreys are so unpredictable. All I know is, he won't harm me. And I can control him, to a point. But, he doesn't like you! Funny, a bird is going to decide your fate. =Stefan=

  • I, too, flew over the Bermuda Triangle while on route to Germany for reforger. Do you think alien actvity was responsible for the disappearances? Speaking of Germany, Neil once visited Berlin before the fall of the Wall. He is on record as standing near a tree next to the Wall and declaring "Mr. Khrushchev, tear down that tree! If it is not torn down by September Morn, by the name of Sweet Caroline I will remain forever in blue jeans. I am...I said!"

  • The reason the plane crashed has nothing to do with birds. He lost control of the plane while reaching for a fuel selector switch that he could not see. Read the NTSB report. It's on the net.

  • That's what they would have you believe

  • Cousteau was in the group of people who hated and feared birds, that's why he spent most of his life in the ocean.

  • unless you were there beside him and witnessed this, you have no reason to talk about anyone living or dead, simple as that

  • What a beautiful way to enjoy John Denver and Jacques Cousteau's greatest adventures togeather...

  • what a lovely treat after so long, in hearing the song, seen jonh in melbourne 10/10 1975 he is missed, deb

  • Another post. I have just found out the CALYPSO is going to, or has been, sunk as a reef. What a waste!!!Why do we fight anything that helps us? I am naive. I don't understand why we are destroying ourselves. And, damn it, I'm a warrior.=Stefan=

  • I have recently found out that CALYPSO is being restored and will be playced on exhibit. (Thank you, my friend). I would much rather see her sent back on her original mission. =Stefan=

  • Cousteau is my hero. I've just bought an expedition boat and named it 'the calypsio'

  • Beautiful!!

  • Amazing & beautiful!

  • John Denver gets a bad reputation for being a softie, but this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

  • I was born and raised on Cousteau on the families little black and white TV; Denver gives the ultimate tribute to mutual greatness. Thanks for sharing.

  • beautiful

    Thanks

  • Thiss IS really a wonderful treat! Thank you for sharing it! 5 wonderful stars!

  • pretty nice pictures from the under-water-world :-)hey, tomorrow is life earth!!:)

  • 2 Legendary Figures Born & Died Leavin' Their Marks /Trails For The Rest of The World ..to FOLLOW! John; Cousteau ..RIP Thank YOU, BOTH - WE LOVE YOU! P(;ACE
  • Both were wonderful!1 Thank you for sending this video my way!

  • Yeah I second that;)

  • Wonderful video

  • Wow. The music video that comes at the end is the kind of film and music that made Cousteau a legend and his work so different from the millions of identical cable underwater shows today. Don't know where you found this mrmanok, but thanks for posting it. Memorable stuff.
