You can't design your own characters.

You have around 12 eligible characters, don't know the exact number 'cuz they recenlty added more playable characters for multiplayer.

Right now Brotherhood is the only one with multiplayer, while AC 1 and 2 have only the story mode.

The new AC, Revelations, is only coming out November so is up to you.
