i think everyone can agree that when you listen to karnivool there isnt exactly a word to describe how you feel, just a feeling of whats going on in my ears is good and if it stops soon then id rather go deaf so ill never hear anything again, because nothing can compare
Absolutely love Karnivool. When my sister baught Sound Awake, I started moving into alot of music territory...all the way that I ended up with King Crimson at the end, and I'm still 16, but find I can't find anything 'new' anymore. But one record I always come back to is where it began...Sound Awake. Karnivool has always been my favourite band, and Sound Awake my favourite album. They mean the world to me!
Their drummer is absolutely amazing, but I think their guitars get overlooked a lot. Some of these chords are tough to play, and really aren't used much by other bands
@wysle okay. just youtube it. dude Chino Moreno is the baddest mother fucker out there (Besides Maynard James Keenan) Deftones have been my life since i was 12
recently saw this song live... i was so glad when i finally realised the lyrics are "..it's letting us all escape." not "..a soul escape." reduced the wank factor for me,
@datswotimtknbout I actually think all band members had input into the lyrics especially the bassist Jon stockman, he was doing a philosophy degree at Curtin University I think...I may be wrong though
@JTbassist09 He isn't doing a PhD haha. He is doing Nanotechnology :) Im his cousin, but yes ALL members wrote this album, Themata was mainly written by Drew,
@jbard80 Do you want his fucking number? St Address lol? email? Dont be ignorant. He is not doing a phd because he hasnt finished his under-grad in nanotech due to all the touring, and being busy. I didnt say it wasnt incompatible you dick, I said he isnt doing his phd at this time.
who the fuck decided to cut the beautiful drum solo at the end! fuck youtube and all the suckers generally!! we love Karnivool and Change is one of their best songs! reupload it with the drum solo NOWWWW!
@JTbassist09 i get your point, it's hard to tell tone on these comments tho... but by the "NOWWWWWW!" I reckon he was taking the piss a bit.. but much respect for the respectful conversation. ;)
@Basssurge I think (I could be wrong) that The Butterfly Effect has in at least once of their tracks. I can't remember which track it was, but I'm gonna try and find out again.
Part 1 doesnt exactly flow into Part 2? Still good as its karnivool! I heard that they didnt have time to finish it on themata, so called it Change part 1... So that they could finish it for Sound Awake..
@jimmysando99 Part 1 is actuially at the very end of Deadman...you are right that they didn't get to finish it in time and thats where the name came from. it was re-recorded for this album and it flows very well, if you ask me...
this is my favourite song. bar none. i listen to this song and just get lost in it. they played this live in melbourne to close their set a couple of nights ago, absolutely blew me away. i will never experience anything like it ever again, that is until i see them next time :D
No, I'm sorry. I've tried for months now to find a song better than this: I can't.
This is the greatest piece of music ever written; It's perfectly performed, written and the lyrics are just ... I can hardly believe how good they are, written by a devastatingly under-rated band.
I may actually need help for my Karnivool addiction...
@zachisgodly from what ive heard and what i can draw from the lyrics, it seems like an anti religious song. i think thats where the 'hello hollow halo' part comes from. i can tell its deeper than that though.
@datswotimtknbout I heard the entire album "Themata" by Karnivool he improvised the drumming and stuck with his improv...that is an amazing skill it's hard enough to improv like that let alone remember every beat you did first time. I think he did the same thing for some of "Sound Awake" too but I'm not sure about that one.
@Vanista01 its a different drummer in sound awake to themata. most songs on sound awake were based around drum beats with bass and the songs were built around that. steve might improvise some fills but his beats and rhythms are all tight and deliberate, and the same every time.
@datswotimtknbout SERIOUSLY, dude. Holy shit. The drumming is this album is FUCKING BEAUTIFUL! And I love how nice and big and open his drums and cymbals sound. They don't sound so tightly mic'd; listen to that last section with just the drums; gorgeous!!
@datswotimtknbout that whole section is in 9/4 time. which if you dont know music theory is really weird. but man i can lock into it and that is really fuckin nuts. love it.
This is probably my favourite song of the current century. No band can make music likes these guy's, just stunning. Plus the last vocal part sends shiver's down my spine.
Well said. I saw them for the first time this past saturday night. My fiance's band opened for them at one of our local venue's downtown. By far some of the most talented musicians I have EVER had the pleasure of seeing!!! <3 <3 <3 Karnivool! They are super nice guys to boot!!!
The song starts with a sample. The first guitar sound it's just high gain drive from peavey 5150 I guess and little bit of delay and whammy in some places.
@JTbassist09 actually thats debatable. on the album sound awake the song is only titled change, not change part 2. also change part 1 does not lead into this change. i personally think the explanation for it is going to be on a future album.
Thanks JT for posting this. I went out and ordered it, Import style. I don't know why this isn't playing in the US but maybe I can 'encourage' my local stations to get it up! Good stuff!!!
the start of this song, mimics aboriginal music, in recreating sounds of the australian land at night, you can hear the calls of frogs and birds, made either with the guitars or samples, on that im not sure. then the didgeridoos come in. this is why i love karnivool, there's so much stuff there if you care to look. and no other band that i know of has portrayed aboriginals like this either.
nibiruallstars hit the nail on the head, as to why people make the comparison: "tool are genius, karnivool are genius"
How many legit GREAT bands are out there? Not that many. Tool and Karnivool do have some similarities, but I think the greatest point that people get stuck on is the genuine quality of the music.
Just in general i think progressive rock is amongst the finest and most talented music..Opeth..Porcupine Tree..Dream Theater..Karnivool..Tool..Pink Floyd..Symphony X..King Crimson..etc...you get the point :)
ya im getting tired of people comparing bands... its bullshit... without any band new bands wouldnt have inspiration to push the envelope, watch it bend... a little toolism... lets just let music be music...go bitch at sports.. and how they run back and forth scoring goals for millions of dolla.. that is fucking stupid right there.... oh he shoots he scores.... ive heard that a million times... but i guess repetition is new thing right....i dont hate sports im just saying come on now.. get real
Just went out and brought this album recently, it was the best $20 I have spent in a long time. Its amazing value too considering all up its over an hour long. It helped me survive having to clean my room lol
Surely if they aren't alternative then they aren't an alternative rock band by definition?
I can accept that they do play similar music, but they do have differences. For example I'd say Karnivool use a wider variety of instruments than Tool and perhaps more adventurous time signatures (new stuff) too. Also Maynards vocals are quite different to Kennys.
Yes there are a load of considerable differences. Maynards vocals are one, Jones's guitar riffs, and Carey. His polyrhythmic drumming in combination with samples and kit drumming has never been replicated by any drummer to date.
I love the acoustic breakdown at the end then the drum fill to close the album..... powerful stuff, hopefully it wont be another 4 years in between this and whatever they come out with next
this is a great song but not what i thought it was gona be. the change part 1 on the first album got me so stoked but this part 2 sounds so much different then what they left you with on the first album
Great song from a great band. Tool is my favorite band, and I definitely do hear some Tool in them. Nevertheless, their sound is easily identifiable and couldn't be confused with Tool
JTbassist09, thanks for posting the whole album, its not out in my part of the world yet. I got themata about 3 years ago maybe more and have been so excited for this record to come out. I'm not dissapointed, they have grown in all the right ways.
I don't think the genius of their music hits you at first listen...I told all my friends to listen to this, but it seems it doesn't click for them. They did the same thing w/ Tool back in 1993/94 when I told them about Undertow. With each listen it grows more and more apparent that Sound Awake is pure brilliance...I just wish I had a digital copy, I had to rip mine from a torrent since Amazon isn't selling the mp3 album yet.

Absolutely the most different album ending I've ever heard. Too bad the vid cuts it short. Great drummer!

JTbassist09, thanks for posting the whole album, its not out in my part of the world yet. I got themata about 3 years ago maybe more and have been so excited for this record to come out. I'm not dissapointed, they have grown in all the right ways.

Lay here
Maybe the damage has been done
As we float away like embers
Beneath us, the fire, still, it burns
And I don't, I don't know why
Question who we are and then we die
I guess, I'll see you when it ends
I'll see you 'round the bend
My sober siren rant....
my favorite part...

This is a REALLY good song...
And by the time I wake up I'm going to have their discography :) .

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks these guys are super talented... Best album I've heard since Lateralus came out back in 2001.

So good to have a band release stuff that is more than mediocre for once!

THE progressive rock album of 2009. This album is incredible. Only cd that has ever moved me to tears just from listening.

This sounds like it should be their tenth album. Anything less than instant prog. rock classic will just be disappointing.
