Oooh - Tony Benn knows America very well because he was a student there 60 years ago. That would have been 1948. What was it about his experience there, in the aftermath of a bloody world war that vanquished fascism and saved democracy, that led him to become such a relentless and inveterate critic of that great nation. Anthony Wedgewood Benn was a snotty and resentful young man and remains so in his dotage. A Big fan of Saddam Hussein, incidentally.
For the first time, I disagree with Tony Benn. He said things would be better under Obama, yet Obama continued the same failed policies of bush. At the same time, the kooky right-wing claims that Barack Obama and the Democrats are socialists. Barack Obama is not Clement Attlee, and the Democrats are not the Labour Party of yesteryear. Barack Obama is not a socialist; he is barely a liberal. While modern Britain might have problems, it is still thankfully light years further left than America.
Are people crazy! Benn (Lord Stansgate in his big house in Holland Park) is a sanctimonious, ill-educated bigot who nearly destroyed the labour party in the early 1980's. If he had become PM the UK would be like Bulgaria today.
@rupertbrooks0 Tony Benn is a great man. He is too my left, and I don't agree with him on every issue. But he speaks his mind, and everyone knows where he stands. Great Britain still have notable Labour-socialists speaking out on the issues in spite of Tony Blair & Gordon Brown. Sadly, every news spin and topic in this country always have right-wingers running their mouth in the mainstream press while the left are silenced by a consorted effort of right-wing control of the media.
Tony Benn was seen as a radical when he was a minister, but now he is one of the most liked and trusted politicians in Britain, primarily because everything he told people would happen did happen.
Liked and trusted by whom exactly?Viscount Stansgate, a ridiculous figure on the wrong side of sanity.Only the left wing middle class ever took him seriously.
No he wasn't PM because the two wings of the Labour Party hate each other more than they hate the Tories. Some on the Blairite - now called - would sooner have seen a Tory victory than Benn as party leader. Most of them are now in the House of Lords - if not dead, I must admit not much difference - take from that what you will.

No the reason he was never leader was because he would have no chance of winning an election.
