Yeah, saw this movie back in '73; the song got to me too. Learned it on the guitar by ear .Sounds great on a 12-string. Not very difficult. Will never forget Luke Askew dancing with the girl. Ain't that a wonderment?
? WHAT IS THE NAME OF THIS SONG ? is she just making up words...if you know please RESPOND , I have wondered on this for years! it is a very haunting melody, I would like to learn it .
@1CommissarStrelnikov i dont know the name of the melody (in sweden it's called "dance macabre", even tought i dont think you'll find anything useful if you google that) but im used to the lyrics as: "Runt kring vår stuga, smådjävlar sluga, tassa så tyst med bockfot och svans. Varulvar yla, isande kyla, sveper i dimma fanstygens dans. Bäva o broder, lyssna och hör, vrålen från gast, som osalig dör. Satan han skrattar, flaskan han fattar, super tills dagen gryr." i think the girl in the video
@1CommissarStrelnikov ... just makes up the lyrics, not from any scandinavian language at least, even if thats what its supposed to sound like (and does, at times).
@1CommissarStrelnikov The song isVarvindar Friska which translates from Swedish into The Fresh Winds of Spring. In the movie the song is not being sung in standard Swedish but in a Finnish dialect, heavily influenced by Swedish that was used in the far north of Sweden. Finland was part of Sweden until 1809. The translation that uses "water sprite" rather than "stream man" probably gets somewhat closer to the actual meaning.
@1CommissarStrelnikov we used to sing this song in grade school..thee springtime song,,,"springtime is coming.hear people humming now will the days be merry and long. sunshine is bringing birds that r singing now everyone will join in this song
come let us clap our hands with a cheer, spring is the happy time of the year ,springtime is coming hear people humming sing dance for spring is here...."
@1CommissarStrelnikov The name of the melody is "Vårvindar Friska" ("Fresh Winds of Spring"). It's a traditional Swedish song and it's sung every Walpurgis night, on the 30th of April. The lyrics are describing the wonders of nature and the aching of a woeful heart. The text is a highly complex poem which you have to twist a little until you realize the structure of the sentences. A very beautiful poem indeed, and I translated it to English once. I can send you a PM.
@1CommissarStrelnikov And about the singer: If, and only IF, she really is Nordic, she must be Finnish. It doesn't sound like pure Swedish so I think either they found a Finnish girl speaking Swedish (which is heard by a sharp tone of words), or they taught some random actor the words phonetically. The words are almost 100% correct Swedish, but the pronunciation is quite askew.
I hope I helped you out! I know the feeling of having a question unanswered for years :)

This is my favorite movie about the James Gang. Please put up more clips if possible. You can't rent this movie anywhere.
