Da Shan is not only an accomplished speaker of Mandarin, he's also an intelligent and well-rounded person. I liked how he took the opportunity to politely correct the interviewer on the East-meets-West question. She reflects the typical opinions of most mainland Chinese in a few of her questions, and I thought Da Shan handled them in a very nuanced and respectful manner.
So my question is.... As Dashan is so amazingly fluent in Mandarin, does he still think in English, or are all his thoughts regarding anything "Chinese" immediately processed in Mandarin??Would be interesting to know!! I couldn't imagine merely thinking about something in a different language...!!!
Ha ha, Bruce, with all due respect, that is totally ridiculous. Communication is conceptual. Think about it. You can know what you are thinking of without knowing the words for it.
Sorry, but this is totally wrong. When I'm doing anything boring or just considering possibilities on issues and such, I'm talking to myself (in my head) in English.
The answer to Bruce's question is hard to answer. I have a spanish friend who is great in English, now. He says that when he is busy at work (Disney) English words fly by in his head, but at home with his Spanish speaking family, he thinks about things in Spanish.
People think in language all the time. A lot of philosophers have spoken and written about how language shapes and limits thought. But to answer the original poster's question - when someone becomes fluent in a language, they are able to think in the language.
