I can appreciate the point-of-view of not throwing the baby out with the bath water, but that's exactly what Christ warned could happen. Christ warned about what would happen if the salt looses it's savour. It would be cast out and trodden under foot. Mat 5:13. Unfortunately many ministry leaders are quick to offer themselves grace about the imperfections of the church, but are very slow to extend that grace to the world around them.

I think you could basically sum the answer up like this: Never judge the integrity of a faith or religion based only on the actions of its followers but rather on what it teaches. I know that some Christians have really given us a bad reputation at times but Christ has never done wrong and we should all follow him.

i think the bottom line is this. we've got 2,000 years of history, about 2 billion who identify as "christians" (clearly the level of devotion would tend to show that we'd be looking at about a 1 out of 10 of those actually being devoted in a real way), but still, that's an enormous number. the world around us would be so very very different if christianity wasn't a failure, i sadly say.

A better answer to the letter would be that although the followers of Christ may have failed in their implementation of it, the message of both Scripture and the Holy Fathers themselves remain pure ideals.

@gabiotta The Pharisees were the religious LEADERS of Jesus' time. Jesus spoke more harshly against them than he did anyone else. He called them "whitewashed tombs"-men who look good on the outside but inside they were "full of dead men's bones." They loved their position,but they sure didn't love people. When Jesus befriended the needy, they got upset that he ate w/ "tax collectors and 'sinners.'" Which is more dangerous...those disguised as followers of God or those who outright oppose Him?

"The bible says[...]" All the atheists and agnostics are going to be turned away from that. That's obviously not what's in their mind, for some authority to instruct them. I read on my own and discovered that God was God, and I would still never be willing to listen to a message in the way that you said it, however good and true the actual message is. Are you seriously suggesting that Jesus did not tell people out right that if they did nto repent they would burn in hell? Are you talking your knowledge from the bible bc anyone could look that up? His ministry was a complex mission of healing, teaching, preparation for his death and warning the people of the flames to come? You seem to have some strange "Jesus" that is foreign to the bible and you need to get your hear around the correct one and make sure you are soundly saved....

@john146only Look, what I am saying is that Christ did not threaten people that they would burn in Hell in they would not accept Him. That would hardly have any purpose, as the Pharisees also claimed that people who believed in Jesus would burn in Hell. Who the hell do you think you are, trying to cast fear into my mind that if I do not have the same conception of Jesus as you, I would go to Hell? You are focusing on the wrong thing, that which makes every defense of virtue become a vice.

@john146only And yes, I am wholeheartedly asserting that Jesus worked in a much more graceful way than commanding people to become his followers with the threat of Hell fire to back him up. If you were a convert to the Christian faith rather than one born into it, you should understand that we have a choice, whether we want to serve God in Heaven or have freedom and pure autonomy in Hell. So scaring people with flames and darkness is a very poisonous way for you to go about preaching the Gospel.

To avoid hell and to have a reconiclled relationship w/Christ are two of the best reasons to repent and some do and some don't....

@john146only Yes, it may be our duty to preach the gospel, but 1) we must never forget that we ought to do as Christ does, not with unprovoked ignorant shouting at unknown people, and 2) we should expect rejection. I wasn't saved by terror and plain fear of God, but by love. It's the kind of love which relates to awe and revelation, but I found many reasons to distrust one who threatens me to believe. God does not do that. You can't "reason" with someone to repent; it is their choice, not yours.

@jajdr God is both love and justice. As a part of justice, he will punish sin. He warns us all that a day is coming that everyone will be punished or if they have repented, he took their punishment FOR them. You can not seperate God's love from God's justice and revengence. One follows the other. Bc God loves, he will serve up justice to law breakers. I am nor sure that your concept of Jesus is formed from his own word, or your own contrived ideas about him.

What difference does it make to me whether there is rejection or not, we are the voice piece,but God's Holy Spirit is the one who convers the soul. How are people saved through the preaching of the Word and through the Holy Spirit. You are making claims that don't even match up to the bible. There is some matter of reason in portraying a biblical World view. Peter did early in Acts and 3- 5K or so were saved. Paul also did the same thing in Acts. Jesus did the same in the gospels.

Why would you be so hostile the God's body that is merly following the job it had been given and are warning of the real dangers of hell, that are a natural consequence of The Lord and his Law?
