Thank you SO much for uploading this! I had recorded the movie on paytv so I could watch it a more decent time, and of course the program stopped just as Louie tells Rick it'll be a good idea for him to leave Casablanca. I know it was only a few more seconds, but they are some of the best seconds in film history and I just had to hear them again :)
@squidloveful I really don't think the US hates France, do you? The US owes its independence from Great Britain to France from 1776 on, with money and troops. In 1889 France bestowed the Statue Of Liberty to the US on the 100th year of their revolution. A beautiful iconic gift revered by most Americans. In WW1, 1917, When the UK & France were beleagured; a field officer from the AEF in Pershing's staff shouted: LA FAYETTE,WE ARE HERE! As they landed. Remembering a debt owed to France. Peace.
@BearyHairy Totally man. Not saying America SHOULD hate France, it's just a common stereotype over here that it does. I'm sure a great deal of Americans are grateful to the French. And as I said I think the joint patriotism in this movie is great.
@BearyHairy Thank you for your comments. Not many know that we partially owe our independence from Great Britain due to the $200 million that France spent on our independence mainly bankrupcting the government of France under the rule of King Louis XVI. Check out Lafayette on wiki. He was buried in France and the soil from Bunker hill was spread on his grave.
"Louis... I think this is the begining of a beautiful friendship..." ! what an ending, one of the best ever, to one of the greatest films of all time!
'Casablance Airways is sorry to announce that, due to heavy fog cover at our destination, we will be forced to divert to our alternate aiport, Berlin...'
@antonioknows234 It was at that moment in the film that both Claude Raines (police prefect) and Bogie decide that the Germans must be fought. Up until then, Bogie was neutral and Raines cooperated with Germany. The Vichy gov't in France collaborated with Germany. The kicking of the wine bottle with the "Vichy Water" label was symbolic of both men no longer collaborating or being neutral towards the Germans.
@prokaryotex After the Nazis defeated France, they oppcupied half of France gave the other half to a puppet goverment loyal to them, headquartered in Vichy, in southern France. The Vichy government also controled the French colonies in Africa, and therefore Casablanca. Renault was a captian in the Vichy police force, so he was essentially a Nazi collaborator, but held the posistion mostly for personal gain. His throwing away of the bottle represents his cutting ties with the Vichy/Nazi gov't.
Did you ever see the interview with the writer? He said they wrote this more or less on set, last minute, and then the director shot it WITHOUT the pause and freaked out: "This doesn't work at all!" The writer had to tell him, "No, no, you've got to pause - cut to Bogart, cut to Raines, cut to Bogart, cut to Raines, THEN the line." Perfection, but scary that the director couldn't figure that one out for himself...
If true, then it was one of the few things the director, Michael Curtiz, couldn't figure out on his own in this kind of movie. Do you recall which of the writers was interviewed?
The script was written day to day for this movie. Made it real tough on the actors, especially Bergman, since no one knew till the final scene who would end up with who.
@baseballfuries08 did you know that scene inspired George Lucas? In A New Hope, watch how Han killed Greedo. Yes i know they both fired but still you get the point.
you are the best, the best scene of the movie period.
Key part is how he says "Col. Striver has been shot" then he pauses and looks at Bogart and Bogart knows that he is a dead man, but the guy just says "Round up the usual suspects" and then of course the beginning of a beatiful friendship.
A major slap to the 1 muppet whom does not like this

Interesting shot at the end, Claude Rains was five foot six, and Bogie looks the same height, unless he is wearing his lifts!

a. I love how patriotic this movie is for France even though America now hates France
b. I love how blatantly gay Raines is for Bogart all the way through.

@antonioknows234 It's a bottle of Vichy water. He's showing that he's now done tolerating the Nazis.
