From the Big Payback.....Papa don't take no mess....Papa didn't cuss he didn't raise a whole lotta fuss but when we did wrong....Papa beat the hell outta us! Papa don't papa don't papa don't....Papa don't take no mess....papa got soul got a heart made of gold.....Papa don't take no mess...take it to the bridge Fred!
Are you claiming this track is from The Payback album? Because it's not. It's from the 1974 "Hell" album that you can see the cover of in the video.
However, I have always believed this track was INTENDED for the "Payback" album, and the recording dates back this up. This track was recorded in the same sessions as Payback, and the other tracks on the "Hell" album were done later.
@IkeDyson71 No, I'm not claiming it's from The Payback album but that indeed the "big payback" was that Papa don't take no mess...papa was the final word! IkeDyson71...glad to see that there's other GFOS fans that know what I'm talking 'bout...

No way! I just wrote a James Brown parody called 'Papa Don't Take No Mess'...I swear I never remember hearing this song. At least mine doesn;t sound like this. Guess I'll have to change the title!
Amen brother...not only do the two people who dislike this song take a whole lot of mess, they also got a hole in their soul and have never eaten fried chicken on a Sunday!!!
the two morons who disliked this where either from the boondocks or some one horse town and absolutely classic music haters thank god people like them are far and few between when it comes to this type of music, this was a time time when there was a message in the music not like today and people of all races understood James Brown and loved him and still do
I have a Video of James Brown Live @ the House of Blues in Vegas from 99'... check it out sumtime.... He totally brings it! very energetic and heart pumping!
I heard this at Rand's club in Washington d.c. on the corner of 14 and I st...not there now that was in 76'....Hi ladies...I was the one with the big Afro..
Here's a challenge.....think you can get the complete version of "Escape-Ism" on video?........On the "Hot Pants" CD, it was clocked at 19:00.....I bet if you did it in a wmv format you can accomplish it......if you can you will have a fan for life
Drums are great, but for me it's that soft wah-wah guitar lyric, doing counterpoint with the steady rhythm guitar. In this version it's softer than the rhythm, but in the live versions they switch it up, and the wah-wah is up front. right off the bat (0:01) they rip it...
Just listen to that music! .Singer, musician, songwriter, dancer, bandleader, record producer.Vocal, guitar, harmonica, bass, keyboards, drums, percussion instruments. Damn!!! How many groups or singers play and write their own music today?? People playing real music, not samples from someone else!
@IkeDyson71 sorry(PAPA DONT TAKE NO MESS) i must've been typing to fast, because i really thought i was thanking you. so again IkeDyson71 thank you for posting this video, and sorry for the typepo.
@IkeDyson71@blueaziza,bluemoon,Thank you so much!!!!!! I love this,i was fourteen years old and James Brown was in the Netherlands in the Ahoy!!! with the JB's and Lynn Collins i was there,it was Great!!!!
Ms Thick....you must have growed up in that era....cause you sho know what to say.........I love this version...we used to laugh at James cause we didn't quite understand what he was saying at times.... we grew older and live what he was saying....right on time...."papa was a man who did what he had to do" my kids say that about me.....
@sometimes350: Eddie Murphy did a hilarious routine on James Brown's mystery lyrics. It's worth looking up for a laugh. One thing JB always got right though, was the beat, the soul, the feel of the music. He was SPOT ON at all times. As a very young boy, little Michael Jackson picked the right man to idolize. That says a lot about both of them.

James Brown had the greatest horn players ever in his band. They were incredible and they went perfectly with his soulful style.
