First off you don't know each individual story! How would you feel as a 8 y/o seeing your father hold a knife to your mothers throat and yelling that he will kill her? Thats just one occasion that I witness in my fathers abuse, so would you rather that the woman be stuck in that situation than leave him so the children 'don't suffer' Let me tell (from experience) that the children suffer more in a abusive house than divorce.
Sorry to hear about your situation... I got out when I was 8, but my brother is 5 years older, so he saw and got affected more by the abuse. He gets angry at little things and punch holes in the walls, getting trashed every weekend and blows his money on it. In my case I have nights where I just cry. I'm now 18 but I crawl up in a ball like a child. I also have nights where I just can't sleep cuz my nightmares re-live the abuse.

Why do every time they speak about divorce they show us the nastiest case . 75% of the case their is no battle in court and parent continue parenting together in different form . Actually, I think if the divorce takes kids out of negative enviroments then good for the kids. Divorce sucks, thats true but sometimes when the marriage is so unhappy it can leak out into the kid's upbringing so the unhappy marriage can become a standard for which that child sees and has to go through the same crap. A good example is if a spouse beats another, or verbally and emotionally hurts the other, why should the spouse have to stand for that?
I am sorry that your parents' divorce was bad, but I went through the same thing and I am not so affected that I cannot understand that the divorce actually saved my parents and us. The marriage was so unhappy that it would be tooken out on us.
