Dear Jonathon, Yikes, you slayed me! Thank you very much for the edification of many of your brothers and sisters. You're a very fine teacher, and you have a great collection of riffs you've shared with us, Speaking for me, these lessons have given me the impetus to practice blues piano. Thanks for giving this old guy something to do in my retirement. Much love and appreciation for your contribution.
@modfin if you had any kind of brain you would have realised that at the beginning of the video he was informing us on how he was putting all the other licks which he has explained in the other 30 videos together into one solo. If you look through the other video's, you will be able to follow it.
he;s too good to learn from ! he's just showing off .. that's way too advanced to learn anything from . . . damn i the song was finished before i could even touch 1 key on my keyboard . . . why is he laughing ? !! :)))
Seriously, I know a lot of these licks are just great for getting started out. Why is it that they never teach you how to make your own licks? You could learn about the first 10 licks and let your musical instincts take over then come up with something unique!
@corndogers564 well... it would be kinda strange to "teach" you to do something yoruself, the licks are here to inspire you to get new ideas, then after you master these licks, your fingers are trained enough to move how you want them, so when you hear an idea in your head, you can try it using the techniques you learned and now you're making your own licks!
Hey Jonathon thanks for the clips. I've been starting to learn some blues and this has been a great start! When i get famous i'll be sure to credit you ;-).
ok i have learned the licks, but what about the left hand? i dont have a whole band at home... please post something where you use the left hand with these licks....
Alright what you gotta do is the standard 12 bar blues. in the key of C (this key) c7 ( c-e-g- bflat) for 1 bar f7 (f-a-c- eflat)1 bar c7 ( c-e-g- bflat) for 2 bar f7 (f-a-c- eflat) for 2 bars c7 ( c-e-g- bflat) for 2 bars g7 (g-b-d -f (natural) 1 bar f7 (f-a-c- eflat) 1 bar c7 1 bar g7 1 bar repeat have fun
@GreekLink1988 you can just use a metronome or you can search C BLUES BACKING TRACK on youtube..there's one in cmaj which is about at the same speed as this( about 130 bpm).if you wanna know what should the left hand do then: in a boogie woogie, blues band you can do the lclassic patterns or the walking bass if there's no bass player..if you have a bass player you can play the chords as voicings( C = E Bb D , F = A Eb G , G = B F A) watch my video called LUKE C SHUFFLE and listen to my left hand
@GreekLink1988 A simple start would be to just play each of the chords (C major, F major, G major) at the proper time according to a basic 12 bar blues progression (look this up if you are unsure of a 12 bar blues progression, I'm sure there is plenty of information on it out there). If you want to make it sound a little better, do a simple walking bass with one beat per note: C-E-G-A in C, F-A-C-D in F, G-B-D-E in G.
@GreekLink1988 Assuming the key of C, and having each "_____ - _____" signify a 2-note chord, you can try this very simple 12-bar blues progression (quarter note for each chord):
C-G, C-A, C-Bflat, C-A x 4
F-C, F-D, F-Eflat, F-D x 2
C-G, C-A, C-Bflat, C-A x 2
G-D, G-E, G-F, G-E x 1
F-C, F-D, F-Eflat, F-D x 1
C-G, C-A, C-Bflat, C-A x 2
I'm not sure how clear that is... there is only so much instruction and detail that you can convey via Youtube comment :)
Hey All - Jonathon here... I do have all of these licks written out and links to all 30 of them. Just send me a PM or visit my profile (chilkari) to find the link. Wish I could just attach the files here somehow... oh well :)
thanks but if you are planning to share some instructional staff, you should play it slower and explain, i m shure that most of comments who thank you don t eaven know what the f. so better to listen to a record player or to watch a piano player rather than youre 30 licks, don t take it personal, comments are to be free and to know how people thinks!
please speak proper english, you lost me half way through your comment, but instead of telling him to slow down and explain take a quick look at the thirty videos on the right...
sheets, ordered playlist: see youtube user/chilkari for playlist and his web site blog for the sheets etc. the sheets are on the Transposed Blues Licks and an H4 Piano Demo entry
Man- I sure enjoyed your playing! Tell me how I can watch the demos of each of the 30 licks you demonstrated? I couldn't figue this out from the video. Thanks, Jonathan!
Anybody who wants the PDF for these, just send me a private message (chilkari) and I can hook you up. (BTW: This is Jonathon, I'm the player in these vids, which is why I have the charts...)
And you know, I'm out for the sheets file too.. :) I'd really appreciate that, why wouldn't you collect all of them in one pic or something, that would do for many of us watching you play your play!
Thanks man! I'd say I can play that no doubt ;) Maybe half of them were new, so I sure am going to learn them right tonight! Great thanks!! This is what I've been looking for, a fill to my lick arsenal :D
this is incredible man i am a beginner blues player and i love all of your stuff its sweet but it would be extremely helpful to me if you sent me the .pdf thanks.. jonathan you are the man

Great this is exactly what I have been looking for! I can already play some of these but will now move on to more advanced ones! thanks for posting!
Mainly you should play whats in the heart! that's where the blues inside you is! just listen to a few blues artist and feel what they feel! then improvise and eventually it comes out of its shell!
Very nice instruction videos, I can't stop watching and practising, thank you! :)
Would it be possible to do some vids about how to accompany a band? I really have difficulties in playing "proper" chords, that don't sound boring on the one hand, but on the other hand they should "fit" and not be too "pushy". What should I play with my left hand, so that I don't interfere with the bass player...?
Yeah -- sometimes its hard to find the whole series. Message me and I can send you a link which lists them all in order, with links for a PDF of the music, and the MP3's of the backing tracks... (-Jonathon)
