Is the competence of UBC of the same standard as say, University of Toronto or any other universities (in whatever country) with a good reputation? According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities, UBC is ranked 36th out of 100, and UoT 27th, but someone told me that these ranking systems often rely on scientific merits of people who study- or have studied there (thereby a better reputation for the university in question), and is not entirely based on the competence and resources.
@McS.. It really depends on the ranking you look at. UBC is ranked 36th and Toronto 27th, with McGill around there too by the Jaio Tong Research Institute in China. However, both Newsweek and Times Higher Education rank all 3 institutions higher; Times - UBC (29) and UofT (18). You are correct, however, that often science and applied science is focused on. That said, all 3 of Canada's top universities have excellent science faculties and both Times and Jaio Tong use fair ranking systems.
I got a question: I'm just curious, how would you compare the Computer Engineering program at UBC with a program such as one offered at MIT? A honest compare and contrast please....just trying to look for options in schools..
@mgtechknow: MIT > UBC in computer engineering for sure. That said, UBC's Faculty of Engineering is ranked 16th overall in the world, so very good. Unfortunately, I'm not in Engineering, so I cannot elaborate further than that.
i got an offer from both UBC and Toronto. I prefer UBC :) I really want to do Bsc Pharmacy however as an international student, I'm not allowed to do that. I would have to do Pharmacology instead. Is it compulsory to do Msc Pharmacy and even Dr before becoming a pharmacist ?
@PoemOfChrysanthemum it certainly shouldn't be, I'm pretty sure UBC just has a very high demand of domestic students so they can't open up to international students for medicine and pharmacy.
So long as you have a Bachelor of Science, with proper prerequisite courses, and a well-done PCAT, then you should have all the requisites necessary for a Pharm. D.
Is it hard to get into the University as an undergrad. My mother went there and I get pretty decent grades But I don't know whether it is hard or not. i am also a canadian citizen
@himynameississy: It depends what faculty you are trying to get into. Competitive average for entrance into Commerce, Science and Engineering are all over 91% with Human Kinetics around 88-91% and Arts 84+% (not sure about this last one though). Once in, there is also the matter of obtaining the grades required by the department you want to get into, something you declare in 2nd or 3rd year, depending on what dep. it is. Being a Canadian citizen will not help that much until you're in.
I go to UBC, it's not that great. The undergraduate program really sucks compared to SFU's undergrad program. And I know this cause UBC grad students don't know anything when I'm in class with them. The only reason UBC is considered so great is because of their specialized schools (medicine, law, dentistry, etc).
I'm in faculty of medicine. It's a great program but the course material is so basic compared to what I am used to. It's not a bad university, but I really dislike it when people place UBC on a pedestal.
Yea.. sometimes people exaggerate things in their own way, which could be kinda annoying. But as a promo video, it has to place the materials on a certain level for sure. And just say, from the aesthetic perspective, that's definitely a good one.=)
PS, I'm goin to UBC next year if everything works out ok..
Yeah, I guess they are just trying to sell the university. It is a good university with many awesome programs. I dunno, I'm just peeved at people who think that UBC is the ONLY place to get an education and that everyone else is worthless. Maybe cause I am in a science discipline with such cut throat competitive and a few snotty private school people.
Well good luck, and try your best and I'm sure you will achieve what you aim for. But always keep in mind, it's you that matters, not the university. I never got accepted to UBC, they put me on a waitlist and the rejected me. I went to SFU, did an honors degree in Molec Bio and Biochem and then applied, and UBC was pretty much begging for me to go there. So never ever give up no matter how tough the situation may be.
@elizzia16 Sure, I did my Bachelors (Honors) in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at SFU and I am currently doing my PhD in Experimental Medicine at UBC.The important thing to remember is that you are what you make of yourself, it doesn't matter what university you attend.
never want to go back. it's only for stupid rich whites and so called "cultured, refined, and well-educated" Cantonese.
