robotech is the english verion of macross that was imported to the USA/Canada in 1986

Robotech is a compliation of 3 different (unrelated!) animees, where saga-1 is Macross.

I always loved the Macross story line much better than anything Robotech could ever come up with but that's to be expected since the original is usually better than any spin off.

@TekkaSage Robotech is not techinically a spin-off. It is its OWN story. It has similarities to Macross, because Harmony gold utilized Macross as the first part of its Robotech story, followed by Super Dimension Southern Cross and Mospeada. A spin-off has some connection to the original story. Robotech and Macross are completely different universes and stories. Both enjoyable. I like Macross as well as Robotech. No rule says you have to love one and hate the other!

@onegemini77 True, a spin off focuses on secondary characters of the original series which would actually be nice to see. What I meant to say is that Robotech is a cheap knock off of the original series. The Macross imitation is alright but when it comes to substance and quality the genuine article will always be more respected.

@TekkaSage Well I agree and disagree about the substance and quality. As Robotech progresses, it takes a FAR different story arc then Macross. Really they are not the same story at all. Which is why I do not see Robotech as a Knock Off. Don't get me wrong however. I like the Macross story much more. Especially as showin in Macross Plus and Macross Frontier. Macross 7...well I was dissapointed (Playing a guitar and singing in a Veritech during dogfights?).

@onegemini77 Calling Macross 7 a disappointment is an understatement. A massive fail more like it. There will always be people out there that are fans of both. I love both but there is no way you can say Robotect isn't a knock off due to the character designs and beginning storyline are almost identical. Knock offs eventually deviate from the original but that's the point. Gives you a different perspective of what could of happen.

@TekkaSage I see your point. But the reason I avoid saying a knock-off is the reason behind them doing that. Macross at 36 episodes would not have been accepted by the U.S. Networks to fill their after school time slots. So Harmony Gold had to bring in the other two anime's to make Robotech 86 episodes. Which meant they had to tweak the story and do it in a limited time frame. This basically created a whole new universe, that really has nothing to do with the Macross universe.

@TekkaSage I do understand where your coming from, but to me a knock-off is more along the lines of someone trying to mimic the same story and idea. Robotech took their story in a completely different direction. Yes they had to have similarities because of the restrictions of the anie they were using. But the story is different enough to allow them to then move to the next two Animes and continue it. A knock off to me is more like Transmorphers to Transformers.

@TekkaSage One last note. The Robotech storyline has potential with the continuation of Shadow Chronicles. If you have seen Shadow Chronicles, then you can see how Robotech is nothing like the Macross story. Again the only reason there is any similarity is because Harmony Gold used the original Macross Anime for the first 36 episodes of Robotech. There are two other completely different anime's used for the second and third parts, which dramatically changes the story line. Enjoy both :)

@onegemini77 No clue but if you really want to see a Knock off of Robotech try looking up "Robotech The Movie". It's about a red motorcycle that transforms into a robot but uses a lot of character designs and well.. you'll have to watch it for yourself.

@TekkaSage Well, in the third Robotech Saga, which used the japanese anime Genesis Climber MOSPEADA, they actually had mecha called Cyclones. These were motorcycles that transformed into armor and one of the female characters had a red one.

Im not sure if you have seen all three Robotech Sagas. Their is Robotech: The Macross Saga (The city is called Macrossnot the Ship, whish is always the SDF-1), There is The Masters Saga and there is The New Generation Saga.

Lot of hate here for Robotech. Robotech was my first exposure to Macross, so I don't diss it. I can understand what HG had to do to get it to air in the US. If they could have left it alone as a separate series, they would have. I prefer the background music to the Macross music. The Robotech theme is one awesome theme. Sure, the Minmay songs for Robotech were pretty bad, but Michael Bradley's songs for New Generation are still awesome today.

Conclusion = View Macross at least once in original Japanese. A lot of Robotech's (American) music themes were way better and characters had better names too. But the voice-acting in Japanese were far superior.

Actually, I watched the original series in the form of the 2006 re-dub and it's way better. It's true, more things are intact in robocrap than any other dubbed and edited anime from the 80s.

But the music and character names are obviously better in the original. How could you compare shit like 'to be in love' with 'My Boyfriend Is A Pilot'? It's UNTHINKABLE.

And look around, robocrap's fans continously admit the Macross saga part is better. Why are there no fanvids of SCC and Mospeda?

Plus, the Japanese voice acting in SDF Macross seems cold and unloving in comparison to the more emotional English dub.

When characters swear and shout in the English dub they sound more intense and you can feel the drama and hopelessness of the war.

I admit it's one of the only anime beside Cowboy Bebop and Beck to have great English dubbing. The voices suit the characters. In robocrud everyone sounds 'nice' and 'innocent' which doesn't help make the conflict between them more obvious.

Robotech: The Macross Saga = American dub version with quite a bit of editing, name changing and story altercation.

Robotech = Three Part Series. The Macross Saga was Part 1. Part Two and Three were dubbed from other Japanese series. Never did bother to find out cuz I never liked the storylines.

Yeah and both are craps. A normal thing considering the fact that both bear the name RoboCRAP. ZERO ORIGINALITY in Roboshit sequels unlike the Macross ones. Comparing Macross and Roboturd is like comparing a F-22 (Macross) with a P-38 Lightning from World War II (Roboass). Just to tell you how Macross is way superior to Homotech at every level.
