The American Southwest was not part of Mexico because it was culturally affiliated - it was part of Mexico because Spain just left it for the Mexican government to have. All the TRUE natives of the American Southest are still living here.
Not to mention, Mexico sold this land to the US. That makes it American territory, not Mexican.
