Telemann était très apprécié de son vivant, à tel point que les habitants de Leipzig voulaient absolument l'engager sous contrat. Après de nombreuses et longues négociations, Telemann finit par refuser, et l'on dit alors à la cour que, faute de n'avoir pu engager « le meilleur », on se contenterait d'engager « un médiocre ». Ce médiocre n'était nul autre que le jeune Jean Sébastien Bach.
