North Indians were listening to Ilayaraja songs through proxy MDs like Anand Milind and others. Anand Milind has copied almost all Ilayarajs songs to Hindi.

Hindi industry had good MDs like RD Burman, Naushad and before that OP Nayyar, Shankar Jaikishen, etc. But after them, no one came and what they have was Bhappi Lahiri, Anand Milind, Anu Malik et al who were copy cats.

Every era in music is owned by a different person. Tomorrow, someone else might come to take ARR's place. But at that point in time, IR and ARR will still be remembered for whatever they did. To tell you the truth I can definitely listen to the songs from this movie a few times every day. But the ones from Sangamam more.
