  • Such a beautiful voice!

  • this is actually one of best songs i have ever heard........much more haunting and tender than nat cole's fantastic version........the vocal is sensational in it;s tender, soulful simplicity and the backing arrangement must have been played by angels. the photo of sam and his first wife makes you want to cry knowing what happened to them. the photo is as perfect as the song...... young and handsome sam with his obviously proud, loving him, beautiful wife. the photo is a mona lisa in itself....

  • Heaven is in this song!

  • YES it hurt Sam to his heart he dedicated the song Somewhere there a girl to her talk with joey her son off and on and he said he lost wonderful mother and the greatest Dad in the world.

  • Nat, Sam & Marvin did this song and all three are excellent.

  • ~SIMMMMMPLY BEEEAUTIFUL~ Sam was in a league of his on.....he was untouchable!!! "Much Love To A Great One". Jesse Belvin Jr.

  • Amazing! Where is this recorded? it rivals Nat's; and that is the gold standard!

  • Now, I love Sam Cooke's songs, be they originals or interpretations of existing classics done by others of the period. But when Nat King Cole puts a stamp on a song...it becomes an indelible marker that reflects Nat, irrespective, of who's singing it. To me, it's akin to someone singing Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" they may do it...but, the original can never be touched. Same is true for Nat King Cole's "Mona Lisa". Each song has become their signature songs and associated with both.

  • Simply amazing; on par with Nat King Cole's version. Sam sung a song called 'Farewell' I think that was the name. I'd give ANYTHING to hear it again. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? It begins, "The train pulled in ..." Someone, please post it, for the world to enjoy.

  • @anonymousdei ....the song is called 'farewell my darling' and its on the 'heart of soul' album. also, check out sam's 'lovable'. absolutely beautiful !

  • I agree Sam was awesome! Did u guys notice that you're saying almost identical compliments to those that u praise Maxwell with??? That's because Maxwell sounds and acts more like Sam Cooke than Marvin Gay. R kelly's voice is almost all the same sweet tones of Marvin's and I wish he'd stop making super freaky songs and remake Marvin's songs. At least "Let's get it on". :D

  • oh, ive loved this mans voice since i was 14, how beautiful is this version.. as beautiful as nat king coles..

  • I love his voice....so cool and clear like water =) I miss you Sam...RIP

  • Love Sam's version....ahhh

  • Hmh, Wow... To Most This Song Is An All Time Great To Me Its A New Found Classic Thanks For the Post... Sam is Truly One Of The Best... His Concepts Are Truly Inspiring... They Make a Young Artist Like Myself Want To Shy Away From The Pop Yo Wrist And Lock Like This And Makes Me Wanna Touch The Heart of my Listeners Like He Does... R.I.P Sam Wish i could have met you...

  • timeless, Sam was ,and still is ,the "Man"

  • Sam had such a beautiful tenor voice...... thanks a MILLION for posting !!

  • Splendida, Sam, splendida...

    Grazie

  • Great piece! If you want more Sam Cooke, try 'The Man and his Music'. 28 songs, all written by Cooke. That was very uncommon in those days.

  • WOW!!!!!!! So gifted, love this

  • This is sooo beautiful. What a good singer with such clear diction. I think his record company should re release this album "Hits of the 50's" Oh how we love good music!!

  • Wow... I haven't played this version of Mona Lisa in years... This was originally released on his second RCA Victor LP "Hit's of the 50's" (1960). It's been re-released over the years in different LP/CD collections. Check itunes.

  • Sam Cooke is the greatest I listern to his songs all of the time. There is a man in Koscisusko Mississippi who sounds just like Sam Cooke his name is Taft Hawthorne I mean this man really sounds like Sam Cooke WOW!!!!!!!!!

  • Well, DAYUM!!! Makes no sense somebody singin' that Awesome!

  • Never new Sam Cooke did a version of this, just amazing!

  • In every song that Sam sang he searched for meaning of lifefrom the depths of his soul. I completely understand the overtones of yearning, searching, loneliness, and Hope. This is the instrument of the spirit and soul, Sam Cooke.

  • smix86 So when can we expect your Novel?.... beautiful discription, and totally on point...thanks for the soul expression....

  • Couldn't say it any better than that!

  • My favorite version of this song

  • Who Knew? Thanks you sooo much for the gift......like opening a present at Christmas.

  • Which cd album is this on, it is not on 'The Man and his Music'..... Also, what album has his 'Frankie and Johnny' track, another great song from Sam.

  • Just stumbled across this chasing other links. WOW! Have heard Sam Cooke before but never took the time to LISTEN.

  • im the biggest sam fan been collecting 45 years massive collection this is great sam went to see nat at coccobana to see how he performed but again this is great

  • Awesome indeed. Clean, clear and crisp!

  • I am a big fan of Sam. His voice is hauntingly beautiful and his interpretation of standard ballads and songs are just out of this world. I really miss you Sam. Requiescat in pace!

  • I am THE BIGGEST fan of sam Cooke. My first son will be named for sure, Sam, Thanks for posting Trevycoley. I like Nat King cole's Monalisa too.

  • You hit the nail on the head!!!

  • excuse me while i diee.....

  • "...and they die there..."......this is the voice that God listens too

  • OH DEAR LORD JESUS CHRIST!!! THIS MAN'S VOICE SOUNDS LIKE THE OCEAN...SO PURE AND CLEAN AND CLEAR. He sings this song as if it's his own and he made it his own. He had the prettiest sound ever and no one could have competed with that. Nat's version of course will always be a timeless classic but Sam's is right up there with his. Like the way he did Nat's other song I Love You For Sentimental Reasons. The studio version was awesome! Anything melodic that came out of his mouth was sweet. Love Sam!

  • The most beautiful version !!!!!!

  • Oh my how beautiful. I am a huge fan of Sam and I've never heard this version before in my life. Where can I get a copy of this? Oh btw thanks for posting this. Absolutely beautiful.

  • agree weep

  • thats him and his first wife to me she looks better than the last and she was more faithful

  • Delores Mohawk.. his first wife. The story of how she died is so sad to me. I believe the poor woman was extremely heartbroken when Sam Cooke decided he didn't want to be married to her any longer.

  • yeah she was sooo beautiful and i think it hurt him even more when she passed especially with him knowing that she had left her son, behind poor fella.

  • Nat King's version is more subtle and crisp, Sam's version has it's own colourful uniqueness, and a lot more soul. THANKS i never heard this.

  • Absolutely beautiful! Nat's version was great, but SAM COOKE breathed life and soul into this song. By the way,who is that fine woman in the picture with SAM? Is it his first wife?

  • yep it sure is.

  • Why Monalisa? the woman with him is beautiful than ugly monalisa.what ???????

  • In saying that she is Mona Lisa he's conveying that she is a piece of art, I know what you're saying though...

  • @nardos07 get some culture willis:P

  • @mbsunlimited very good ,try it by conway twitty or cliff richard

  • Brilliant rendition of a beautiful song. Probably even better than Nat King Coles gorgeous original. Sam had such a great voice. Thanks for posting and turning me on to this masterpiece.
