@V8FORESTJIM Its a Spicer box which came with the engine. Apparently very good. Crawler 1st gear and overdriven 5th.
I will be making a transfer box out of a series-3 box, but altering the ratio to overdrive the output. Not that easy to do but its possible with my machines.
Hope to see some more updates as the build progresses. My 2a rebuild/v8 conversion took 3 years to finish, been evolving for another 6 and nowhere near as complex as yours, Good luck, and look forward to seeing the finished article!
who doesnt like turbos? Why dont you like them?theyre totally needed to make decent power. That thing will be a pig!seriously consider turbo charging it.Buy an hy35 holset from a 12v and be done.
The main problem is the engine is as low as it can be without hitting the front axle, and it is 1/8" off the cab. As the turbo charger air manifold is another 8" higher, I would have to chop a lot out of the cab which is a lot of its strength. Also its more of a problem when they go wrong.
As the original engine was 77BHP, and this engine is 130BHP, I think I will see quite a difference in its preformance.
Not this engine, this one is a Cummins 6B, the 6BT is the Turbo'd one. It is exactly the same only of course the 6BT has a Turbo. The 6BT also used different crank pin bearings. Same size but made of a different material.
I think mine uses white metal bearings (traditional type) and the 6BT ones are bi-metal type (normal in todays engines).
This engine was not built by Cummins either, it was built by Leyland in Darlington (I think), UK. The only difference being is the Leyland badge.
Not driving yet, but the bulkhead is 90% welded up and the chassis is only needing a rear crossmember, gearbox crossmember and the off hole patching. A decent days work for that.
frog ftw!!!!!!

@V8FORESTJIM I want to get it running for June time for the land rover shows. Finished - that may take decades!

you could be upwards of 250hp with a turbo!thats conservative.

Is this a non turbo 5.9 12 valve cummins?
Hotrodx199 2 years ago
Its deffinetly a Cummins, I've not physically seen how many valves it has but I would imagine 12 would be correct.
It has no Turbo, I don't like Turbo's.
maltelec 2 years ago
Did this orginally come equipeed with a turbo and then you later removed it? It actually sounds better without one.

Ahh makes sense why you can't find any non turbo 5.9's around here in the US.

what's that engine from? don't sound as good as the mazda in mine!
atg62 3 years ago
The engine is from a Leyland Roadrunner truck. The same engine is used in a DAF 45 truck, only with the added Turbo.
Anyway any straight 6 diesel will sound better than an inferior japanise vehicle.
