@trekranger The sticky stuff is watermark stamping ink. There are various brand names, with Versamark being perhaps the most common. It is sold wherever stamping products are sold -- Michaels, for example. Probably at Joanns but we don't have Joanns in Canada so I don't know for sure.
@nightcats thanks 1 more question. is paper the only thing you can use this on or can you use it on things like metals or clay? How long will it last ?
@trekranger You can definitely do it on clay. I have done heat embossing successfully on an old CD disk, so probably it would work on metal. It should work on anything that the watermark ink would stick to. The main consideration would be whether or not the heat tool would damage the surface. Some fabrics might burn, for example. I have heat embossed on velum paper, and it works, but you have to be very quick. it should last indefinitely.
@junglee786 Powder flecks are a challenge to us all. I shake the paper before applying the heat. Sometimes I blow on the paper to remove the flecks, and sometimes I try dusting with a soft makeup brush. Whatever works.
I have a question, how are you able to use the embossing gun without warping your paper? I have tried several times to emboss my sentiment on my cards and my cardstock always ends up ugly. Thank you.
@MHarrington8406 If the paper is warping, you are applying too much heat. You could try holding the gun further away from the paper or try moving it around rather than holding it stationary. Keep a close watch on the embossing powder and move the heat source the instant the powder melts.
If none of those things helps, then perhaps there is a problem with the embossing powder you are using. Some of it takes longer to melt than other kinds. Experiment with different brands or colors.
The powder I sprinkle on the word Dream is called embossing powder. It is sold at most craft stores, including places like Michaels and Joanns. I don't' know where you live, but ask at any store where they sell paper craft supplies.
Thank you, June, for making this so clear. It's interesting how you hold the stamp pads and stamps - I usually do it the other way around - pressing the stamp onto the pad instead of pressing the pad onto the stamp. Very cool! I'm off to try your techniques! Thanks again. Eileen
Hi Eileen. When you're using small stamps, I don't know it if matters much which way you do the inking. With big stamps, that are larger than the size of the ink pad, it seems to make sense to put the ink to the stamp. Thanks for posting and I wish you success with your crafting.
Dear June! Thank you so much for this tutorial. On this way I´ve learnt how to heat emboss. Ever since I picked it out the first time in 2008 I have watched it almost 100 times!!! :-)
Hello. I do not know if you can do heat embossing on leather. The heat of the heat gun might harm the leather. If you have a scrap of leather, you could try and see what happens. I believe you would have to use a solvent ink like Stazon. I doubt if the other inks would work on a slippery surface like leather. If you try, please let me know how it goes.
HI - just got your response. I'm a little flaky about responding and posting and hope I don't screw things up. I literally, yeah, literally, went to Michael's mins. after posting and bought my heat gun - 50% off. It's so cool! Thank you thank you thank you! love ya and Happy St. Pat's Day! eileen
I guess I just happened to be working at the computer when you left your comment. Sorry, I know nothing about your Stampin up Plate. I have never used Stampin Up products. I do my embossing using a little craft tray - but I hold my paper in the air with tweezers so the heat doesn't hit the tray directly. Glad you liked your butterfly and congrats on experimenting.
thank you very much! until watching this I was unclear as to how to use each method- the differences and I did not know how long (barely 15 seconds) to...I have some powders and now some inks and the heat unit but have not been brave enough to use them; now I will. one other thing though I'm really unclear as to brands/kinds of inks for differnt effects have you any suggestions nightcats?
To do heat embossing, you must use as slow drying ink, meaning a pigment ink. I use ColorBox usually and sometimes I use Tim Holtz Distress Inks, which are embossable. For watermark inks I use Topboss or Versamark.
No doubt there are other brands as well that work. Why not experiment with a scrap of paper?
still in my pj's I FINALLY TRIED IT, using some winter wonderland (bought at a garage sale)) and versainked a butterfly stamp on pink paper and IT looks WONDERFUL - anyone hesitating don't it's SO easy! but it made a big mess with static electricity on my plastic stampin up plate (plug on end lost- another g.s. find) will a dryer sheet run over it first take care of that? I hope to get better powders soon. thank you for prompt reply I was surprised.
No, a blow dryer is not hot enough to melt the powder. You really need the gun. I have heard of some people using the burner on the stove but I don't know how that works. It sounds tricky.
whats the glue or sticky stuff? and where can i buy it.

If I use a colored pigment Ink in white and use a black embossing powder. Will it still work? Or make it gray?
xosweetpunkox 11 months ago
@xosweetpunkox My guess is that the color would still be black. Why not try and let us know what you get?

Great Video. i have a question? can I use heat embossing in a real flower?
ingbulnes 11 months ago
@ingbulnes You could always try but I doubt it. I think the flower would dry up with the heat and crumble.

hi, i was wondering if i could use my hair dyer instead of a heating gun? would it take forever to melt the powder?

Dose the powder melt pretty fast with the Embossing gun?
evypie13 3 years ago
Yes,it melts fairly fast. Maybe 10 or 15 seconds. If it is a big stamp, you have to move the gun around.
