I can't help but feeling that the voice-over guy sounds silly, with no real understanding of the grief and what is appropriate here. He is probably better at cat food commercials, or something "light" like that.
sorry for you - Neill Finn is one of the greatest musos and artists of our time - Hessie was great and eternally with us in his spirit, laughs, songs and love.
PS Hessie and Seymour are Aussies - and Neill is a resident of Australia - Check your facts.
@chrissipopable Niel has not lived in Australia for about 15 years he lives in Parnell Auckland he did live in Australia for about 10 years. I grew up with them as my parents farm was across the road from there parents farm in Cambridge Waikato. As song writer can we not call them Australasian and be proud of them?.
sorry for you - Neill Finn is one of the greatest musos and artists of our time - Hessie was great and eternally with us in his spirit, laughs, songs and love.
@chrissipopable I think that Hessie was very much the heart and soul of the chemistry and energy that fuelled Neil with the creativity and the best music writing of all time. And I feel this is lost as the band moved on with two more albums (intriguer and time on earth). It's just lost its fizz along with Paul.

Old CD collection --> ripping to iTunes --> reliving excellent Crowded House music --> WikiPedia Crowded House article --> mention of this video --> youtube search --> sad :(
one sad day for all crowded house/spilt enz fans when hester pasted.. sad days are ahead 1 day as time passes we will loose all the greats, neil & tim finn, kelly, barnes, seymour brothers, Gareth, and many more from the great australian song book of 70-80-early 90
Well, given that half the band now are Americans, I guess they're an American band ;o) Teasing!! You know, NONE Of them live in Aus anymore. Now that Neil is home in NZ, Nick is in Ireland and Matt and Mark are both American, I guess they're just an international band, spread over 3 continents. Crowded House.....tricontinental band ;o)
Anyway, this clip never ceases to move me. It's gotta be one of the most moving live performances ever.
I've just returned from the Seymour Theatre in Sydney where Neil Finn did a solo gig. Absolutely brilliant. What a catalogue of songs. Humbling to be in the presence of genius.
I know what you're trying to say about Paul McCartney, but Neil Finn is Neil Finn - he doesn't need to be compared to anyone else. Sheer music genius - have seen him live a few times, on his own or with Crowded House and he is just awesome.
I saw the Finn Brothers at the royal albert hall the day after they (and us) found out about Paul Hester. Seeing your hero break down whilst singing Dont Dream its Over was a killer. This tribute is fantastic. Looks like Neil was about to sing the last line after the audience sang it, but saw that image of Paul on the screen and then just couldn't. Love them all
i had the most wonderful experience seeing CH in Austin last month. they played this song, and it seemed i was the only "old school" gal who held up a lighter for Paul. i mean, the song is amazing, so i would have held up the light anyway, but i did it because i felt Paul's presence during the whole show, and because of this particular video, it felt even more important for me to do so. it was like he was there, in my heart, letting me know that it was okay to feel good about it all. RIP Paul
paul hester is a true credit to australian music and all melbournians. if there were more paul hesters in this city/world, it would undoubtedly be a better place. it is a true tragedy that he is no longer with us, but his memory and legacy will live on wherever u hear the awesome music he helped create
The true test of time for a song is its ability to mean different things to different people at different times....This song may have started out as a relationship song--but here it is a song of grief and mourning, but at the same time life affirming--as those who are still alive must move on after loss. Neil Finn's absolute courage in performing for his friend is powerful, beautiful and a testiment to their long friendship.
I love this song and the group "Crowded House". That song was and is so full of heart and what a great tribute to a bandmate and friend to all, Paul Hester.
i hope everythings ok where ever you are now hessie. you are greatly missed, your humour and your heartbeat drumming. r i p buddy, and to u neil, well, wat can u say... i think that you r here to keep us all up. thanks ch for everything.
Yeah that was tough for me to watch, cause you could tell he was holding in some tears. Wow I love Crowded House though and actually had there Temple of low men on cassette back in the late 80's. Great album.
That man has so much strength to be able to sing such an emotional song. I am sure Paul Hester would have been very proud of him. I am stunned at how he managed carried this performance off with such compusure. But just look at those eyes and look at his body language when he stops singing. Totally heart breaking. Good on yea Mr Finn. Such an amazing tribute.
cant belive its been 5 years always remember that day coming home from work with the news on to see that paulo had gone.hope u have found ur inner peace r.i.p
Just a devastatingly emotional performance. This is the true essence of what it means to be a professional. A lesser talent would have broken down. But he managed to pull it off. What a great tribute to his friend.
I have watched this vid many times and only had enough guts, to write something now. Many have lost a friend, in the same way. Many questions with no answers. We live our life with the loss of someone, who should be with us.
@jonnyking29 thats so true mate! neil is a legend! i dont think ppl realise today wat a brilliant artist he is and every song means sumthing! truely moving stuff and yes mcCarntney learn how to tie laces!
@Bellycopter exactly mate, neil is just an endless fountain of fantastic music and a real perfectionist, definately for me he's the greatest artist of all time, after all these years to be still writing such outstanding stuff, even his oldest stuff is still fresh and ya never tire of listening to it, and performing with more energy than guys half his age is a real credit to him, he just loves it! looking forward to the new CH album and the bliss that it's sure to bring
to the few who thumbed this down... really? not once ounce of compassion (the essential human element) running through your mind, body or soul. It's akin to booing at someones wake. Hearing someone sing so heartfelt at a tribute to a lost mate ( and in a band you spend alot of time together )... shit if you don't like it that's fine by me, but show some dignity and respect for all involved and move on.
@68kira Erm, I agree it's a bit of a dog act, but I'm not sure you can compare booing at a wake to clicking a button on a youtube video. This is the internet afterall, trolls will be trolls.
@doitinasubmarine WRONG! This is humble ground and being a pussy is being pussy. To whomever clicked bad on this tribute..I wish you all the worst in life. RIP PH!
somewhere deep inside, somethings got a hold on you, and it's pushing me aside.......Neil must have tried so hard to reach his friend......depression is a monster.....once it's got a hold of you it can be a killer. :( So glad my wife stood by me in my darkest hour.
get real people! this shouldn't be a fight over where they're from. Paul was from Australia, so was Nick, and Neil was from New Zealand. the band was formed in Australia, therefore they are an Aussie band. my thinking is that because the lead of the band, Neil Finn, is from NZ, means that there are strong vibes from that country. don't dwell on where they are from folks, just enjoy the music! this video is supposed to be a memorial to Paul. remember that!!
this video is so moving, ive watched it everyday for wat 2 weeks now? i think they shud keep that song just as neil singing it sounds so much better and means alot more instead of the new drummer playing it
I was at the Atlanta show when Paul decided he'd had enough and left. The show that night was intense and brilliant, and they played all of Paul's favorites. More than once during breaks between songs they commented on what a strange night it was. There was a dark magic floating around. Who would've guessed that night this would be Paul's fate?
Hester leaving us ....is just wrong. All I can say is what a void. Paul was a champion of the unedrdog. No one one will ever be able to say different. What a loss..
i haven't watched this video in so very long because it is so sad to see Neil singing this song when it seems so sad for him to sing it for Paul. you can see the grief on his face while he sings, and it is clear that even though he is doing this for his lost friend, he is hurting inside. i know it has been a long time since Paul's untimely death, but for fans and friends of his, the sadness still must hang on. i know how that feels. God bless you Neil and CH/Split Enz members... PEACE!
being from America, i guess i don't see where the big deal is... but the leads are from NZ, and some of the rest of the band are from Australia. can't ya just share 'em? cuz their really should be enough love to go around for these guys, no matter where they're from!! :-) no matter where they originated, they are my favorite band ever, and i love them! Neil Finn's voice haunts my dreams!
Till not long ago i always maintained that CH were a New Zealand band, having NZ heritage myself, it was a easy decision to make. However to be fair, 2/3 members of the original band are from Australia, this coupled with the fact they were created in Melbourne must surely make them an 'Australian band'.
I see them as being as much of a Aussie band as a New Zealand one, really . True, Neil is the main creative force in the group and he's always called NZ home (nothing wrong with that) but Nick and Paul are and were as Australian as XXXX Gold, Vegemite, V8 Supercars and gum trees.
I watched them perform in Portland Oregon in the early '90s, I think, and at the time, watching Paul on stage, I remember thinking that for him something was hurting...
And who disliked this?

somewhere deep inside, somethings got a hold on you, and it's pushing me aside.......Neil must have tried so hard to reach his friend......depression is a monster.....once it's got a hold of you it can be a killer. :( So glad my wife stood by me in my darkest hour.

get real people! this shouldn't be a fight over where they're from. Paul was from Australia, so was Nick, and Neil was from New Zealand. the band was formed in Australia, therefore they are an Aussie band. my thinking is that because the lead of the band, Neil Finn, is from NZ, means that there are strong vibes from that country. don't dwell on where they are from folks, just enjoy the music! this video is supposed to be a memorial to Paul. remember that!!

this video is so moving, ive watched it everyday for wat 2 weeks now? i think they shud keep that song just as neil singing it sounds so much better and means alot more instead of the new drummer playing it

you gotta know that this song means something totally different now than it did when Neil wrote it. i truly feel for him while watching this video.

Neil Finn's voice haunts my dreams!

neil finn is a legend btw

Till not long ago i always maintained that CH were a New Zealand band, having NZ heritage myself, it was a easy decision to make. However to be fair, 2/3 members of the original band are from Australia, this coupled with the fact they were created in Melbourne must surely make them an 'Australian band'.
jezxk18 2 years ago
meh Australians have always stolen stuff from the Kiwis.
Like Russell Crowe for example; when he wins an Oscar, he's Australian. when he throws a telephone, he's New Zealander

Paul sang "Italian Plastic" as a Frankfurt, Germany 1991 encore wearing my Woody Allen-style glasses, claiming he was my long lost brother.
