  • And who disliked this?

  • Thanks and sorry you decided to go.

  • Blimin aussis still trying to steel our kiwi bands, CROWDED HOUSE IS A NEW ZEALAND BAND!...... NOT AUSTRALIAN!

  • such an honest performance, you can feel the pain in this performance

  • Amazing performance by Neil. Rest peacefully Paul.

  • It's now nearly 7 years since Hessie???? How fast does life go on? Still remember you Hessie.:-)

  • A true mark of respect from one of music's true gentleman.

  • carambas me ha hecho llorar

  • The fact that everyone in the crowd knew the lyrics makes me proud

  • i really dont know how neil kept it togeather

  • Beautiful tribute!

  • love u paul R.I.P

  • Paul was an awesome talent

  • I remember this, I bawled my eyes out its like watching Brian May sing Love of My Life and hearing the crowd sing along... the mark of a true artist.

  • Typical Aussies , claiming good KIWI talent yet again.

  • :'( Such a tragic loss :'( The world still misses you Paul and always will, R.I.P.

  • a great era....and a fine song from some talented guys. What a shame that Paul Hester left this life.

  • nvm I know it again now. lolz

  • what's the song at the beginning

  • @kujo2041 It's "Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House

  • I can't help but feeling that the voice-over guy sounds silly, with no real understanding of the grief and what is appropriate here. He is probably better at cat food commercials, or something "light" like that.

  • He that burns twice as bright, burns half as long. Never truer words word spoken about a bloke like Hes. I miss that crazy bastard! :)

  • You can tell he's trying not to cry through the whole song.

  • Who cares, Split Enz and Crowded House are Australasian treasures, no matter who belongs where. Appreciate that they came at all.

  • Such an emotional performance and tribute to a great musical force. As usual Neil, amazing job.

  • beautiful, fitting tribute to Paul Hester, well done Neil Finn for managing to get to the end of the song

  • @redheadsrock08 So right. I can't imagine how hard it was to perform that song.

  • Crowded House are one of the greatest bands in history.

  • Paul who? Westerberg??

  • sorry for you - Neill Finn is one of the greatest musos and artists of our time - Hessie was great and eternally with us in his spirit, laughs, songs and love.

PS Hessie and Seymour are Aussies - and Neill is a resident of Australia - Check your facts.

  • @chrissipopable Niel has not lived in Australia for about 15 years he lives in Parnell Auckland he did live in Australia for about 10 years. I grew up with them as my parents farm was across the road from there parents farm in Cambridge Waikato. As song writer can we not call them Australasian and be proud of them?.

  • sorry for you - Neill Finn is one of the greatest musos and artists of our time - Hessie was great and eternally with us in his spirit, laughs, songs and love.

  • @chrissipopable I think that Hessie was very much the heart and soul of the chemistry and energy that fuelled Neil with the creativity and the best music writing of all time. And I feel this is lost as the band moved on with two more albums (intriguer and time on earth). It's just lost its fizz along with Paul.

  • 2:40 if you just want the song.

  • one of those moments that mark a point in australian music history

  • I'm glad there back to together the memories of Paul still remains his spirit still goes on.

  • Crowded house is a nz band lol, ausies always nicking our stuff

  • @Kiwipaulie1 two aussies and i kiwi, mmmmmmmm, formed in melbourne, mmmmmmmmm

  • @Kiwipaulie1 two aussies and i kiwi, mmmmmmmm, formed in melbourne, mmmmmmmmm, throw in an american or two, true, the writing genius of a kiwi, but.............macka

  • @mactheman21 come on man, crowded house is a kiwi band,

  • why????? still miss paul love paul but sooooooooooooooooooooooo glad crowded house got back togeather and their never alone as paul is always watching them and us as fans love kalxx

  • blah blah blah till 2:27

  • As an American, I've heard much about the "American Spirit." I can honestly say that I am envious of the Australian Spirit. The feeling, compassion, sorrow, and, joy I've seen come out through Australian music is second to none. I liked Split Enz and Crowded House growing up. RIP Paul Hester. Cheers, mates.

  • Awesome gotta lov this song

  • I like the studio version, but I love this version.

  • Rest in peace Paul Hester <3 . Gone but not forgotten

  • Still badly missed mate .. you were the heart and soul alright ..

  • still carnt watch this with out crying love paul and the guys of crowded house glad they are back togeather but the are not alone hope you are at rest paul your missed and still hurts never got the chance to meet you :.-(

  • Absolute first class!!

  • This song makes me wanna cry!!!!! You better be home soon!!!!

  • My wife and I saw Neil at Peter Jackson's King Kong wrap party on March 22nd, four days before Paul's death.

  • @GrigoriSom. absolutely. Neil Finn is the greatest songwriter. ever. beautiful and brilliant music and lyrics.

  • Reat in peace Paul Hester 2005 From the Maori Boys!!!

  • Great song by a Great band for A Great drummer and A Great Bloke.

All you sicko's who dislike should stick to your own crap!!!!!

  • This broke my heart when I saw it live and it still breaks my heart now. Ah :(

  • those who dislike this vid (9) must not know the legacy that paul left.R.I.P hessie god bless those who knew what u were about and what u supported luv u .will never forget u

  • the finn boys are kiwis mate, remember that

  • Old CD collection --> ripping to iTunes --> reliving excellent Crowded House music --> WikiPedia Crowded House article --> mention of this video --> youtube search --> sad :(

  • one sad day for all crowded house/spilt enz fans when hester pasted.. sad days are ahead 1 day as time passes we will loose all the greats, neil & tim finn, kelly, barnes, seymour brothers, Gareth, and many more from the great australian song book of 70-80-early 90

  • I don't understand how there can be 9 dislikes. What twisted, heartless people disliked this video?

  • Well, given that half the band now are Americans, I guess they're an American band ;o) Teasing!! You know, NONE Of them live in Aus anymore. Now that Neil is home in NZ, Nick is in Ireland and Matt and Mark are both American, I guess they're just an international band, spread over 3 continents. Crowded House.....tricontinental band ;o)

Anyway, this clip never ceases to move me. It's gotta be one of the most moving live performances ever.

  • Comment removed

  • kiwi people kiwi ,,,, its a kiwi band !!!!!!!!!

  • @hottunes007 Paul Hester was born in Melbourne

  • I've just returned from the Seymour Theatre in Sydney where Neil Finn did a solo gig. Absolutely brilliant. What a catalogue of songs. Humbling to be in the presence of genius.

  • This band is KIWI not Donky aus

  • @hottunes007

Crowded House is Anzac mate 8)

  • This is so touching.

  • This is very emotional, it is the second most emotional 'Goody Bye' song next to Zack Wyldes Throwin it All Away.

These two songs and alcohol do not mix I weep for my lost loved ones every goddamn time.

  • very beautiful to sing to a friend even when he is gone

  • very neautiful to sing to a friend even when he is gone

  • The magic happens at @2:30

  • even after all this time past i still can't believe we lost a favoured son, father and hero to australian music.

  • That's a mate.

  • I know what you're trying to say about Paul McCartney, but Neil Finn is Neil Finn - he doesn't need to be compared to anyone else. Sheer music genius - have seen him live a few times, on his own or with Crowded House and he is just awesome.

  • I saw the Finn Brothers at the royal albert hall the day after they (and us) found out about Paul Hester. Seeing your hero break down whilst singing Dont Dream its Over was a killer. This tribute is fantastic. Looks like Neil was about to sing the last line after the audience sang it, but saw that image of Paul on the screen and then just couldn't. Love them all

  • So glad CH are back together...but they wont be the same without Paul.

15 years old and loving Aussie bands of the 70's, 80's and 90's

  • i had the most wonderful experience seeing CH in Austin last month. they played this song, and it seemed i was the only "old school" gal who held up a lighter for Paul. i mean, the song is amazing, so i would have held up the light anyway, but i did it because i felt Paul's presence during the whole show, and because of this particular video, it felt even more important for me to do so. it was like he was there, in my heart, letting me know that it was okay to feel good about it all. RIP Paul

  • Don't know how he did that performance....

  • What a loss he was.

  • 1:03 what is that song?

paul hester is a true credit to australian music and all melbournians. if there were more paul hesters in this city/world, it would undoubtedly be a better place. it is a true tragedy that he is no longer with us, but his memory and legacy will live on wherever u hear the awesome music he helped create

  • @apljpod the song playing at 1:03 is "Mean to Me"

  • The true test of time for a song is its ability to mean different things to different people at different times....This song may have started out as a relationship song--but here it is a song of grief and mourning, but at the same time life affirming--as those who are still alive must move on after loss. Neil Finn's absolute courage in performing for his friend is powerful, beautiful and a testiment to their long friendship.

  • Lovely. :*)

  • Grown man weeping. R.I.P Paul

  • Great feel .

  • Love you Paulo....I think of you all the time and will never forget you. -XXXXXXXXXX-

  • absolute and utter class x x x

  • This is the greatest ARIAs moment of all time.

  • The magic starts at 2:36

  • RIP Paul. This was one of the songs I used to listen to over and over when I was getting divorced in '92. Its a real picker-upper .

  • What a tribute..legendary

  • Ich liebe diesen Song. I love this song.

  • I love this song and the group "Crowded House". That song was and is so full of heart and what a great tribute to a bandmate and friend to all, Paul Hester.

  • Everything about this group screams TOGETHER. Really hard to believe that Paul has been gone for so long .Love you Hessy and love you Crowded house

  • Truly great band! Miss you Paul!

  • i hope everythings ok where ever you are now hessie. you are greatly missed, your humour and your heartbeat drumming. r i p buddy, and to u neil, well, wat can u say... i think that you r here to keep us all up. thanks ch for everything.

  • this is really sad.. was not a fan at the time but I feel for what everyone close to paul especially Neil et al must have gone through...

  • Love you Neil...long live Crowded House...R.I.P. Paul I hope you have found your peace God bless...fantastic music will remain with us forever

  • Neil is the only person that cuts through to my heart, its like he and crouded house have been with me throughout everything good and bad in my life!

  • I've been looking for this and it is nothing short of what I expected.

Thankyou Neil, and God bless you Paul.

  • Breaks your heart.

  • Yeah that was tough for me to watch, cause you could tell he was holding in some tears. Wow I love Crowded House though and actually had there Temple of low men on cassette back in the late 80's. Great album.

  • wow :)

  • Not weird, just breathtaking.

  • It does seem a bit weird to be singing a song about a wayward female partner to a deceased mate.

  • That man has so much strength to be able to sing such an emotional song. I am sure Paul Hester would have been very proud of him. I am stunned at how he managed carried this performance off with such compusure. But just look at those eyes and look at his body language when he stops singing. Totally heart breaking. Good on yea Mr Finn. Such an amazing tribute.

  • cant belive its been 5 years always remember that day coming home from work with the news on to see that paulo had gone.hope u have found ur inner peace r.i.p

  • Neil Finn writes incredible songs......

  • Just a devastatingly emotional performance. This is the true essence of what it means to be a professional. A lesser talent would have broken down. But he managed to pull it off. What a great tribute to his friend.

  • KIA KAHA!

  • very emotional.Brings tears to my eyes all the time.Rest in peace hessie you will always be missed mate but never forgotten.

  • Neil,

You have done your cobber proud.

I have watched this vid many times and only had enough guts, to write something now. Many have lost a friend, in the same way. Many questions with no answers. We live our life with the loss of someone, who should be with us.

I am now tripping over emotion and will go.

    Cheers,

    TheUTE!

  • Great tribute to a friend.

  • Paul McCartney wouldn't lace Neil's boots! Truly moving stuff

  • @jonnyking29 thats so true mate! neil is a legend! i dont think ppl realise today wat a brilliant artist he is and every song means sumthing! truely moving stuff and yes mcCarntney learn how to tie laces!

  • @Bellycopter exactly mate, neil is just an endless fountain of fantastic music and a real perfectionist, definately for me he's the greatest artist of all time, after all these years to be still writing such outstanding stuff, even his oldest stuff is still fresh and ya never tire of listening to it, and performing with more energy than guys half his age is a real credit to him, he just loves it! looking forward to the new CH album and the bliss that it's sure to bring

  • Go New Zealand!

  • to the few who thumbed this down... really? not once ounce of compassion (the essential human element) running through your mind, body or soul. It's akin to booing at someones wake. Hearing someone sing so heartfelt at a tribute to a lost mate ( and in a band you spend alot of time together )... shit if you don't like it that's fine by me, but show some dignity and respect for all involved and move on.

  • @68kira Erm, I agree it's a bit of a dog act, but I'm not sure you can compare booing at a wake to clicking a button on a youtube video. This is the internet afterall, trolls will be trolls.

  • @doitinasubmarine WRONG! This is humble ground and being a pussy is being pussy. To whomever clicked bad on this tribute..I wish you all the worst in life. RIP PH!

  • somewhere deep inside, somethings got a hold on you, and it's pushing me aside.......Neil must have tried so hard to reach his friend......depression is a monster.....once it's got a hold of you it can be a killer. :( So glad my wife stood by me in my darkest hour.

  • @sparhawk1975 ditto mate

  • Great vid. ***** and fav :)

  • Such a great song, great momment, great bloke, RIP Hessy

  • Saw the guys in Sheffield England of all places in '93. Still love it - allways will.

  • so poignant, so painful - such a tribute

  • get real people! this shouldn't be a fight over where they're from. Paul was from Australia, so was Nick, and Neil was from New Zealand. the band was formed in Australia, therefore they are an Aussie band. my thinking is that because the lead of the band, Neil Finn, is from NZ, means that there are strong vibes from that country. don't dwell on where they are from folks, just enjoy the music! this video is supposed to be a memorial to Paul. remember that!!

  • stanbimi you are so right, so poignant, such a tribute

  • 5 Years and still it seems like yesterday. love you man R.I.P Hessy

  • its a fucken new zealand band. australia stop trying to claim everything.

  • @hollythekoolest only insecure people keep playing the 'which country do they belong to card' .......

How does them being New Zealand actually affect you in your real life? No really ...... how?

  • @gxd4b1 insecure people keeping play the 'which country do they belong to card'...

    no, no they dont.

we dnt try n claim men at work as ours.

im sure u would have something 2 say about tht.. n thn ud be a insecure.

  • we lost a bloody good drummer that day

  • this video is so moving, ive watched it everyday for wat 2 weeks now? i think they shud keep that song just as neil singing it sounds so much better and means alot more instead of the new drummer playing it

  • MAn - this guy is hurtung and carrying it off thats pain right there on stage folks.

  • Neil Finn's haunting song is a most apropos tribute to his chum. So moving.

  • You can see Neill fighting against his tears.......very emotional.

  • far these guys rock

  • you gotta know that this song means something totally different now than it did when Neil wrote it. i truly feel for him while watching this video.

  • I was at the Atlanta show when Paul decided he'd had enough and left. The show that night was intense and brilliant, and they played all of Paul's favorites. More than once during breaks between songs they commented on what a strange night it was. There was a dark magic floating around. Who would've guessed that night this would be Paul's fate?

  • :.......(

  • I cried for days...l will never forget it

  • Hester leaving us ....is just wrong. All I can say is what a void. Paul was a champion of the unedrdog. No one one will ever be able to say different. What a loss..

  • Cold chills...

  • i haven't watched this video in so very long because it is so sad to see Neil singing this song when it seems so sad for him to sing it for Paul. you can see the grief on his face while he sings, and it is clear that even though he is doing this for his lost friend, he is hurting inside. i know it has been a long time since Paul's untimely death, but for fans and friends of his, the sadness still must hang on. i know how that feels. God bless you Neil and CH/Split Enz members... PEACE!

  • being from America, i guess i don't see where the big deal is... but the leads are from NZ, and some of the rest of the band are from Australia. can't ya just share 'em? cuz their really should be enough love to go around for these guys, no matter where they're from!! :-) no matter where they originated, they are my favorite band ever, and i love them! Neil Finn's voice haunts my dreams!

  • neil finn is a legend btw

  • Till not long ago i always maintained that CH were a New Zealand band, having NZ heritage myself, it was a easy decision to make. However to be fair, 2/3 members of the original band are from Australia, this coupled with the fact they were created in Melbourne must surely make them an 'Australian band'.

  • meh Australians have always stolen stuff from the Kiwis.

Like Russell Crowe for example; when he wins an Oscar, he's Australian. when he throws a telephone, he's New Zealander

  • you can have him back ... we don't want him...

  • Crowded House is from New Zealand.

  • I see them as being as much of a Aussie band as a New Zealand one, really . True, Neil is the main creative force in the group and he's always called NZ home (nothing wrong with that) but Nick and Paul are and were as Australian as XXXX Gold, Vegemite, V8 Supercars and gum trees.

  • Paul sang "Italian Plastic" as a Frankfurt, Germany 1991 encore wearing my Woody Allen-style glasses, claiming he was my long lost brother.

  • R.I.P Paul...

  • R.I.P paul .funny bloke great drummer.what a performance from neil like he says at the end love u paul.

  • so poignant, so moving- dont know how he got thru it...

  • best drummer ever and what a funny guy!

  • neil cant be beaten for raw emotion rip hessie

  • What a performer!

  • This video made me cry so much. I don't know how Neil managed to get through that, but it's a beautiful song.

  • <3<3

  • I watched them perform in Portland Oregon in the early '90s, I think, and at the time, watching Paul on stage, I remember thinking that for him something was hurting...

  • we miss him greatly, the double cymbol strike in WHEN YOU COME is how I

remember him ,brilliant! thank you! sj.

  • awesome kiwi as good on ya auzzies 2 go paul

  • Neil is the Paul McCartney of Australasia.
