This is exactly what I wanted to see. I adore Flash, but it can only take you so far. Coupled with planing effects and AE's camera and lighting system, my animating world just opened up before me. Great tutorial.
HEY!!! this is a great tutorial. I have actually made some very breif like 30 zecond animations that you might want to critic because I am a VERY NEW beginner. I really want to get into animation.
Hey fellow After Effects animators. We just finished a full animated pilot using this method. Check it out on our main page and let us know what you think!
can you make an animation like a cow and chicken or an ed edd n eddy style? beacause i can draw cartoon characters but i don't know how to use the programs..pls help me if u can thanx :D !
@NBAfan91 Sure you can. Flash can reproduce any heavy-lined, flat graphical style. A lot of it just comes in how you animate it. Other animation programs, like Toon Boom, have even more flexibility.
so using a video layer instead of an image layer will work if i want to put my 2d animation of prerecord real life video/film, AWESOME jsut what i needed to know for an assignment :D
great tutorial! you animated the penguin in flash and then put in after effects, is it possible to animate in after effects? because i dont have flash..
@MrsPortgas It's possible to animate images and puppets in After Effects using tweens, but hand drawn animation like said penguin is not possible. If you have Photoshop, you could use the Animation Panel to do hand-drawn work, though.
@MulitCreativeFlow Well this tutorial is about hand-drawn vector images converted to raster, so yes. Raster-painted images would work just about the same way.
@Base14Productions so using a video layer instead of an image layer will work if i want to put my 2d animation of prerecord real life video/film, AWESOME jsut what i needed to know for an assignment :D
@cookie123456789012 Because .pngs handle transparency more reliably than movie formats, and are easier to update and swap out than movies in After Effects, In short: After Effects loves image sequences. Although Premiere does not.
OMG!How stupid of me.... :P.This is why they say,READ THE MANUAL FIRST!!! I used to do my animation on a green screen background and later on use chroma key to remove that in after effects!!what a DUMBO!!anyways thanks for the awesome tutorial...no more green screens for me!!!
dude, that you. This is the first tut that explains things and you can do. You are amazing!!!!! Just saved my life seriously, I was about to give up but I'm gonna continue on and save your tuts to my blackberry and study em like their a bible.
Hi, just wanna let you know, an SWF file has transparency too! It is also importable to after effects with this transparency intact. I use the CS3 versions of both programs though, I'm not sure if its any different with later versions
@GerardoArwi57 There is no background to delete. What you see as white is representing nothingness. As long as you export as a .png sequence with an embedded transparency you should have no background issues.
@lukezammit1 Sure, I have my Flash character animation tutorials in a three-part series. I could also do a tutorial on how to make hand-drawn animation in Flash, if there's enough interest.
Thank You!!!!!!!Thank You!!!!!!!Thank You!!!!!!!! Im really greatful for this video i am a noob at animating with backround and you really helped me.IM SUBSCRIBING!

One criticism, and I know I'm petty I picked the bad habit up from my lecturers in my Digital Media course, the shadow is facing the wrong way.
Other than that thank you for the tutorial! Clear and easy to understand.

@joab1996 It's smooth. What's really important is that the character stays on model and keeps it's volume, and it does.

How do you make it a single layer? (Without the white background, making it just the raw animation) .
Because when you delete the 1st layer, there is no layer to draw with.

Solid tutorial. Would you take the same approach to compositing the images into footage you've shot? Would there be more to it?
TheMcCart 1 year ago
@TheMcCart Probably a bit more to it, since you would either need to keep your camera absolutely still or create tracking marks for a moving camera.
Base14Productions 1 year ago
Simple enough with a tripod then, I guess. I'll have to try it out. Thanks for the response.

Cant you also export it as a Quicktime movie because quicktime movies can also export alpha channels.
macjsus 2 years ago
You can export a quicktime movie with embedded alpha channels but I've found in the past it causes artifacting. PNG always gives good results.
