i was at woodford airshow once and i seen a spitfire crash in front off me with my own eyes as the pilot tried to come out of a barrell roll......did any1 else c that?????????
It wasn't a barrel roll - he was attempting a loop far too low and couldn't pull out of it. He was the owner of the aircraft, poor fellow didn't have a hope.
Spitfire was owned by Rolls Royce, flown by David Moore. Currently being restored to flying condition at Filton (Near Bristol) I'm amazed that there was enough left to restore it!
The aircraft didn't catch fire as such - the fireball was fuel when the tanks split. As it was petrol rather than modern aviation fuel, it simply burned up in the air. Although badly battered, the Spitfire was still easily recognisable.
The air show was delayed for two hours, and first up after that were the two Sukhoi SU27 Flankers. They started with their trademark tail slide routine.
i was there that day, three years later i would start work at British Aerospace whwere my brother worked in CAD. I worked there when they became Avro International and then BAE SYSTEMS, I left in 2000/01 to work at Fujitsu, made me laugh when i saw fujitso1522's screen name
I worked on contract at Woodford in 80,s spent many an hour watching various aircraft, one very funny day, one of these guys buzzed the top of our van at the side of the runway, the top of van was wet from rain, it was dry when he lifted straight above us. great days, worked at many aerospaces over the years, and witnessed many aircraft being born.
Just remembered - the commentator was Stratton Ritchie, himself an airline pilot. Always thought he had his name back to front!
See the horn speakers ar 2.27 (and a few others)? I put those up!!

I'm not really surprised. I got a good look at it later on and was amazed at how much of it survived.
