I'm interested to try this beer. I tried to regular chocolate stout and it left me wishing that I put out the extra money for this one. The regular didn't do much for me but I think that's because I had Southern Tiers Choklat a day or two before which I loved.
This may be sacrilegious to the almighty beer entity...but you should try something. I'm not a heavy drinker...but I love craft beers. I'll drink one every week. The occasional two. Anyway. I proposed a night with a few friends to try beer floats. We sampled 10 different beers over the course of a month with vanilla ice cream. (Bryers, was our choice.) Rogue's Double Chocolate Stout...which I hadn't tried previously...was my favorite float. The beer alone was good...but try a float. WOW!
@torch357 Yeah for that much money im sure you could get something just as good if not better. But its worth a try. I think that price is high though.
--- I have been becoming a fan of most brews done by the Avery Brewing Company. have you ever had "The Beast"? Most of those i guess are like Barley Wines I guess. You know more about that than I do. LOL!!! Tasty stuff man.
Sounds delicious. The only beer I've had so far from rouge is Santa's reserve and I was impressed. Really spicy hop character with a solid semi-sweet caramel malt backbone that really matched well (reminded me of gingerbread). I'm planning on brewing an IPA with the yeast strain they sell through White labs sometime this summer, and I have high hopes. Also, you seemed in a really good mood, you get a raise or something?
@capitalistraven Yah that Santas reserve was a really nice holiday beer. Reminded me of Celebration ale actually. If you wanted to you can actually harvest the yeast strain from a Shakespeare stout. Ive done that before and i worked great.
@BeerGeekNation Awesome, I might try that, certainly beats paying White Labs 7-8$ for a vial of yeast I would probably have to propagate anyway. I just tried Dead Guy Ale and I was just as impressed, it was real similar with that same wonderful warm spicy caramel finish but had more lemon zest than pine in the nose this time. I'm going to have to try more of their beers when I get the chance.
sounds good havnt tryed that double yet only had the deadguy double ale ... id like to see that one come up soon .... rogue makes alot of good malty beers so im not suprised to hear of a good stout from them, cant wait to try it ... cheers
@Goldbloodd Yah I have a bottle of the double dead guy in the cellar. It s from 2009 though so Im not sure if I want to review that bottle or not. Guess ill have to find a newer vintage. Cheers
Your first Rogue? Wow, I thought you would've done the Dead Guy Ale by now. This sounds like a good try. I bet it's the same price as their Double Dead Guy, huh.
I think their a really good brewery. I think the only people that be hating are those "indy" folks that are afraid breweries go borderline macro. Just let them do their thing. They're doing good.
I've had their regular chocolate stout and really liked it. I have a bottle of this but haven't cracked it yet. You said it's the first Rogue reviewed. Have you tried any other Rogue beers? I for one think they're overrated & hence overpriced so I rarely buy them. They do make good beers though, but I don't think they live up to the hype.
@KeithsBeerReviews Ive tried others but tend to avoid them because they are so expensive. THey make some solid beers but I think they lost some street cred due to their pricing.
Nice review Chris I just picked up a bottle of Rogues 2011 double mocha porter which I will review soon can't wait to get the double dead guy ale in june then the double chocolate in aug. glad to see you liked it I love Rogue products.
Sounds like a pretty nice chocolate stout. I have only had their regular Double Chocolate Stout, which was nice, but unfortunately I dont get Rogue beers anymore. As Chad said my favorite chocolate stout is also the ST Choklat, it is quite cloyingly sweet as you say, but I dont mind. Chees Chris!
Their regular chocolate stout is great so they'd really have to screw up this version for it not to be good. I've yet to try this though so maybe I'll pick up a bottle next time I see it.
Speaking of chocolate stouts, they just brewed up the Stone collab. Cherry Chocolate Stout yesterday.
@ASXL41 Yeah I have. Love that stuff. Its similar in taste but this beer has more body to it. But it is also around 3% higher in ABV so that is to be expected. Cheers
@JakobSchweikart I have actually had that beer years ago and really like it. I actually harvested some Pacman yeast from that since that is one of their only bottle conditioned beers. Ill have to review it
I see this beer every time I go to my local craft beer store, and I always think about buying it but I never do. I might have to pick one up after watching this. Great review!
@ChadzBeerReviews Yah thats a beer I have been meaning to review for forever. Ive got a few bottles in the cellar from the last batch. Not a good warm weather beer though haha
@BeerGeekNation A good idea for a video this Thanksgiving would be a cellared 2010 bottle vs a 2011 fresh bottle side-by-side. I'm curious how that beer ages. I always down it as soon as I get my hands on it. I probably bought like 5 or 6 bottles this past season.
@JonMount1980 Not really for some reason they just are not on my radar. I dont know why, Dead Guy was one of the beers that got me into craft beer. Ill have to start doing more of them.
