  • how come you need so many tantal caps? Usually one is enough + loads of 100n ceramic.

  • Very creative! - another time brush the board with liquid flux before placing the components, then the solder flows better, and you'll be sure that the Atmega reflows better too.

  • Too much solder.

    When I started doing this, the advice was "put on what you think is too little, and it will still be too much". It's very true.

    The first board I did with a stencil, and it worked great. I didn't get a chance to make a stencil for the second w/ a 64 pin LQFP. I put on "just barely enough" and the pins bridged with solder. Rework with solder wick didn't fix the problem. I had to remove the part, remove most of the the solder with solder wick, and try again.
