I was lucky enough to see Portishead last month with my Mom, who introduced me to them at a very, very, early age. This was one of the best songs they played. :)
it's not about a GUY... why do you people relate everything to that subject........it's about not being able to escape from oneself, or maybe from depression...when you try to be happy and be like everyone else but you're just stuck with yourself and all your habits, thoughts and moods that you can never change no matter what you do
@xXxXZakuDeathXxXx and? it's about people relating to music, you dumb broad. i should also point out that you cared enough to reply to my comment, you are so silly.
On the other hand, I think she might be singing that she is so lucky with the guy, she can't even believe it and she doesn't think she is proper to him. Not quite sure about it tho.
Sorry to put this, but I cannot get on with any of this album. Nothing wrong with it at all. I just loved all the nineties stuff, but do not get the same feel for this. Kudos for Portishead moving on and not sticking with the same style. I should maybe should just get the album and put it on and just listen a few times. Something might stick.
lyrically, its a very sad song. to realize that the person you're with is the perfect lover and the epitome of what you seek in a mate... and to find yourself STILL not in love. that must be heartbreaking. to me... this song is a study in human passion.
well yeah because without portishead's music. music would never change to become "it's time" get it? you probably don't but i assure you that makes perfect sense. if anything that is something came at the right time or after it's time, it wouldn't be noticed. but at the same time. it'll always be before its time because it'll never be anything else until they change it. see so - they're actually right on time. even if they're early or late. you don't understand. it's okay. you're just human.
@alejandro15187 The thing is, that this text isn't arrogant even a bit. She sings about her lover, who is perfect, and she finds him a soulmate, but she's hurting because she doesn't love him as much, as she hoped to.
I love this song and this whole album. The thing with this album, though, is it's something you have to enjoy by yourself and you just have to be wired for it... you can't expect other people to like it. Even though my girlfriend and I match on musical taste 99% of the time, I keep this to myself.
the new album is so great. progressive in all its way. Im glad to see that Portishead and Beth arent arrested in somekind of genre and that they´re all able to change their view.
One of my favourite songs by Portishead... It's weird how this song makes me feel happy and sad at the same time. Incredible.

It's not necessarily "ahead of its time"...
It's just "one of a kind", no matter what!
Truly original.
