Yes, the cloth must be cotton, as well as the string. Any synthetic material will melt and go straight to your hands, and that wont feel too good.

A disposable lighter is filled with Butane, which will evaporate really really fast (it's liquid only because the lighters are pressurized)

Ronsonol and Zippo lighter fluid are Naptha, which are petroleum distillates. If you can't get that stuff, the closest would be Mineral spirits, which is very similar to naptha in composition (you can pick up mineral spirits as paint thinner; check that it is not something else like acetone). It wouldnt work as well though, and it'd be very dangerous too.
