As for the British Army, they provoked far more violence than they prevented by coming in the first place. You can gather that from any book available on the subject. New paramilitaries formed (the provisional IRA included), recruitment surged, bombs, death and violence shot up and people become even more polarised. It was the worst thing for N. Ireland imaginable. A death sentence.
