I been watching your videos, and praying that I will find my way to the Lord.So I have ask a friend of mine to come watch with me .He seem to have different options than you do,but I find myself believing in what you have to say. This makes it hard to know who is right. So I have to believe that the Lord is going to know what is true in my on Heart. BIG EARL GAVIN AMEN!
You obviously have not listened to Lecrae or Trip Lee. They produce hip-hop music that glorifies God and praises Him. It is certainly not the music of violence or rape.
There are some Christians that hold to a "classic" style of church music. "Rock of ages, cleft for me" or something like that. But, not all Christians enjoy singing hymnals in such a way because it feels forced or generic. Music needs to be truthful and respectful, of course. But the Holy Spirit DOES move in other forms of Christian music. I find for me that most modern contemporary styles exceed others in praise for God. In the end, it's a matter of choice for the individual believer.
It's funny though, a lot of the Psalms are sad, angry, or mournful. Imagine singing Psalm 137 "By the Rivers of Babylon" or Psalm 129 "Many a time they have afflicted me" to happy music... you're right. It doesn't fit. I believe in singing the Word of God from the Bible We're aren't always "happy-pappy" Praise-the-Lord. God is grieved, and happy, and even Jesus wept... I love minor keys especially and how they can be joyous and sad at the same time.
Mostly well said, agree that music is not neutral. If music is neutral then why do they not play christian gospel music at night clubs? If they did the people would run away, because the music does not fit! Church music must fit. Rock n roll or any music with entertainment value is not worship.
what they heck. the question should be whether playing music is allowed in worship. otherwise who really cares. this guy does not even use that big book he set down and never picked up again. i am sure that we should be careful what the words are being sung to us, and make sure that it is a godly message from a godly person.
lets use the bible to answer some questions!! *lays bible down* ...BLAH BLAH BLAH....Thats my opinion...have a great day!!! (5 mins later) hey guys what's this gigantic black book sittin over here for???
I agree with his last statement. All that matters is where the music leaves you in the end. If it takes you away from God or pulls you toward sin then it's bad. If it pulls you toward God and his praise, and toward good, then the music is good.
I wonder if Michael Pearl knows what kind of people Bach and Beethoven were. They were as much drunkards and adulterers as anyone else. And they wrote "heavenly" music for commission. I think it is wrong to assume that a certain type of music has top have certain words. And when I think of hymns, I think of hyper judgemental Christians. I still like some hymns, however, that is what I think of for the most part. My complaint with this "Bible teaching" is that there is hardly any Bible in it.
Interesting. I think if we are going to go with this idea, then we have to eradicate a lot of the hymns, because many of the arrangements were taken from old bar songs...
Strange... his description of blues music... I have never thought that before. I always thought of some hobo walking down the road with his guitar or something...
This Elder Brother ought to listen to Shai Linne and he would like some Christian rap! Or Timothy Brindle, "Let's Kill Sin", it does have a smooth, driving sound to it but it is aiming to encourage militancy against sin...so "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:" Ecc 3:1
Ive never been one for any kind of church music whether its hard rock sounding or an organ with a choir, but the closest i feel of the spirit is when i hear christian music in a softer tone. I like stuff like "in the sweet by and by" far more than contemporary church music with lead guitar solos. We have to remember we're in the Lord's house at church. Not at a rock concert type of atmosphere. There should be reverence and humbleness towards the Lord. Just my opinions.
Here's some Bible for you... a good tree cannot bring forth bad fruit. Look at the fruit of contemporary Christian music (of which I was once an ardent fan). Divorce, sodomy and lesbianism, drunkards, pedophiles---this is all stuff on the public record. I doubt anyone can name even10 ccm artists that have not been involved in some scandal or other. The Bible also says, LOVE NOT THE WORLD. So, although the Bible never says "thou shalt not listen to rock music", the principle is there.
@1controversialchick "Love not the world" actually means "dont listen to rock music?" Aren't hymns also "of the world"? They were written by sinful humans. So if contemporary music is off limits due to the scandalous artists, and hymns are off limits because they are also written by sinful humans, what music do you recommend?
Although i don`t think i agree 100% with this i have found that i cannot worship along with a song that is too much like rock or rap. i have found that i can worship with some rock type music, by only concentrating on what is said. but when i hear a christian song put in with upbeat music, if it`s kinda like rock i don`t picture a bunch of teens out in a field drinking at all lol, like i said i go for what`s being said. good video
How can you be so ignorant as to define "good" music, or relate certain types of music with different types of lifestyles? What scripture are you getting this from? Where in the Bible does it define good or evil styles of music? Keep your personal music preferences out of your Bible teaching or you will quickly run into twisting the Bible to fit your own views on things. You will be judged for that, Friend.

You are obviously puffed up and you only wrote a few lines! All of the arguments presented here against this message are opinion just as much as the message itself. Try being consistent. Do you all believe it is wrong to smoke? Wrong to have sex with children? Wrong to marry your cousin or half brother? None of these things is spoken against is scripture and yet 95% or so of Christians agree they are wrong. Why? Because God has given us wisdom. Try listening to wisdom.
@Strategio How am I "obviously puffed up"? I asked where Mr Pearl got scripture to back his viewpoint up....you don't really have an answer for that. What it comes down to is you don't like CCM therefore it's wrong for anyone to worship to it. If you're the example of wisdom that's described in the Bible.......there is no hope for mankind.
I def respect Mr. Pearl and love him, as a brother in Christ... But as a music major, I completely disagree with this commentary. This oppinion is not soley based on scripture, but his preference. I think that the only thing that I agree with on this is the very last sentence... "If the Spirit of God leads you, the Spirit of God reaches out grabs people's hearts with the music, and creates holiness in them, and joy, and elevates them to heavely places, then its God's music."... In love~Barbara
It's just a shame Mr. Pearl limits himself and his ministry with such narrow-mindedness that is legalistic, and yet he teaches that tithing is a sin because it is part of the law.
I think Mr. Pearl is a good Bible teacher, but I agree with all the other comments here, (EXCEPT Editrix92). The BIBLE wasn't taught here, and 90% of it was based on opinion and feeling. I agree that some songs (I don't say this about a whole music genre) just give a feeling of anger, hate or wickedness. I can handle some Christian music that is "hard rock," yet some songs I can't stand because they are just screaming, and some Christian rap songs are good, but some I don't feel glorify God.
You deceive people into a dogmatic view on music. Jesus Christ is my saviour. I'm a musicologist and I am going to a bible believing church. We use rock music, rap music, gospel and classic music: Like old psalms. Everything that God has created through us. And do gangmembers rape women? There are fornication everywhere. Your are just talking about the "worst" sinns! But what about you neighbour or you own thoughts.
We are free in Christ. And we use all kinds of music. African music, European music. You talk about german music and bach. I'm afraid you a close to a word I don't think is apropriate to use. But it's about the superiority of central european and neo-european music and culture. Revise your view. If you have a holy and correct view on music - then we are going to ban many christian churches in the third world as pagan and ungodly because of their in your eyes ungodly music.
The last part of the video sums it up. You have certain emotions attached to music. How have people defined the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's? All with music. Mr. Pearl grew up on hymns, got saved on hymns. Todays new believers maybe have never heard a hymn or understand the beauty of them. But if what christian music they do listen to is uplifting and leads to beautiful worship, then so be it.
The only problem I have is that this is "Bible Questions" and I didn't hear a passage of Scripture or see the Word of God opened...always look into the Word of God for your answers and not peoples personal opinions. I agree with what he said around the 8:53 mark, if it doesn't glorify God, then it shouldn't be used as "Praise" music.
@Chesterntx Interesting whenever someone gives there neg opinion on ccm these good christian musicians reply with a certain rrrrrrrrarf. Hmmm interesting !!! wonder where it comes from???
