@london1817 wow you would be so poor to need to collect rainwater, dont you know that water costs like 2 cents a gallon, jesus christ dont be so cheap, and also why are you so interested in my dick? you must be poor and gay... i feel bad for you
I don't understand how your 4 barrel system works. In my opinion all 4 barrels should be at the same level and connected to each other on the bottom, so they will fill evenly. You've made some sort of water feature!!!
I hear the biggest concern with these is that if you don't have the seals perfectly tight you risk infestation by mosquitos and other bugs that like laying eggs in standing water
have you come across this issue? and if so do you take any measures against contamination of any sorts ( i suppose less of a concern since the water is only for plants, not for drinking.. but the bug issues.. espcially wherei am in Jersey, is a big issue)
I have an upgrade video. This system had serious bug issues! I tore it down and started over. It was a good start but the dern mosquitos were all over.
flp; hey 'new-joisy"!!! lol...dont want bugs in your water? put 2 or 3 tablespoons of olive oil on the surface of the water; bugs cant penetrate the film, and its not poisonous--hope it helps, it does for me , here in 'floriduhh'!!!
@1:40 After the 4 barrel demo. You say the hose goes down the hill, over and around to .... "some plants" that I water with a soaker hose. So, what kind of plants do you grow in the WOODS?
Hahah LOL! wishful thinking. Sorry but it goes to some sibeirian elm trees...........sorry...hahaha you thought it went to mexican redhair didn't you???
Check with your local car wash. Sometimes they use 55 gal barrels and give them away. Most food manufacturers have a few for free or cheap. Call around. Craigs list is another source of barrels.
what kind of plants you watering? aaha just kidding.
Nice videos! You should have a show on green planet or something.. call it, CHEAPEST EVER! Thanks for the helpful tips! I'm building a green house for my garden right now.. I just need to condure up an idea on how too keep the rain water from freezing this winter.
Actually am watering in the winter. I'd like to keep my tomato plants hydrated! So far thats all growing in my garden.. NC.. a little warmer then where I'm from.. I'm sure It'll be fine. Try it out this year.
For all the users that have debris, bugs, algae, and critter problems with their rain barrel system. I recommend a rain diverter kit called RainReserve.
Just out of curiosity did you clean out the fuel tank before you put water in it and how did you clean it if so? just thought it was odd that you would water possiby edible plants w/ tainted water? Petrochemicals such as fuels comtaminate water as to make it non drinkable!! 1 drop of fuel will dessimate 50,000gal of water. just a simple observation.
its a great system, now add a solar hot water system. you can use the rain water for this. the rain water is soft and u use less soap to wash and you get a better clean. with the sun heating your free water how much more could u save? then catch your gray water in another tank and water your plats with it. if you dont use bleach you will cause the bugs to leave. so u culd have a win, win, win, like your smile
Do you have any kind of filter on the on the down spout before water enters the barrel? Most barrels I've seen either have a fine screen on'em to keep debris out, or the downspout has a screen. More advanced systems have a separate small pre-tank which fills up first- so the crud off the roof isn't carried into the main tanks.
Great video- very inspiring. Those rubbermaid-style garbage cans are much more affordable than dedicated rain barrels. Keep up the good work and skate on! :-)
Those blue barrels are usually found for $7-10 US which would make them even more affordable than trash cans. Those barrels are also food-safe plastic as opposed to trash cans should you decide to water a vegetable garden.
I get them used at a tool place a few miles from my house. They were used, previously, for red wine vinegar. I live in western NC. If you look around you should have no problem finding any. Theres no need to spend a small fortune for a new barrel for collecting rain water. These are food safe, should you decide to store water for personal consumption. Maybe I should start selling barrels on youtube..lol Take care
Funny how people think tap water is safe, you water your plants with it and they die. Then they are afraid of rain water. Us Indians can see you are idiots.
Have a nice cup of bleach and flourine dumbass, the rain water will kill you.
Oh, I'm just a small part Indian, more from the boy scout tribe than any Indian tribe, I subscribe to the indian way of thinking though. I should add I was calling people who are afraid of rain water the idiots. (and some of my favorite people are idiots too, unfortuneately)
I watched this video about a month ago and you inspired me to build my own. I started with a 64 gallon setup and I now have a 200 gallon collection system. Thanks for the idea. No more tap water for the flowers:)
@pgo301 "The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked; but now he commandeth men that they should all everywhere smoketh greenish herbs" (Acts 17:30).
How do you get the water from the barrel to the plants you are watering? Do you have to full up a watering can and walk over to the plants, or can you hook up a hose at the bottom of the barrel to water the plants?
how clean is rain water...is it drinkable? Lets say you collect the water like normal then you run it through some sort of filter..Isn't rain water pretty damn pure?
Did you build your ramp? I would love to come skate i haven't skated in years but i got a new bard damn boards are different now compared to the 80's lol

one method i heard mentioned was to float a top layer of polystyrene packing/shipping "chips" on top of your rain water barrel
They block the surface to breeding mozzies.
