Why does Hooker blow all of his money from the first grift on one roll? Who takes their date to a sleazy casino? And why does stripper date ditch Hooker just because he looses his money?
oh yeah i would love to get you back in time to 1936 when this movie was set in a you would not last a day i would set you up for the big sting just like theses guys did and you would ls oes real big sucker!
utter rubbish this is one of the great con movies ever if and when you don't belive it then you have just been stung that is the whole point and oh that ragtime music need i say more!
1973 was a lousy year for Oscar except for Jack Lemmon. This overlong, only intermitently interesting film shows the bizarre Redford mugging for the camera that curiously was apparently so appealing to many back then. I for one am mystified by Redford's ability to fool others into thinking he could act.
The voice over guy's a cunt, I've never seen this and was planning on watching it until..."...this time, they might get away with it!" spoil the ending why don't you!! Anyway, looks a good movie :)
@13haydn14 Actually the Voice Over is referring to the previous movie with Newman and Redford, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid where they didn't get away with it.
If you ask me - this is one of the greatest film's in the Hollywood history. Fantastic music, great plot and incredible cast - Newman and Redford at their best. Stunning.
This movie is Exhibit Gunk-o-schmell as the most impossible tale ever told. No one could have been bamboozled by this laugh-out-loud, mickey mouze, kindergarden set up. No words can describe how utterly nonsensical it is. It's supposed to be telling a believable story but it turned out to be a low-grade comedy. It's a shtoo-pee.
Comparing a cartoonish scenario to a real-life, sophisticated Ponzi scheme is, uh, what is called a 'dumb-kee'---a dumb-kee written by a dumb-kee, i.e. you.
"The Sting" pretends to be realistic but it could never have happened in real life. Many of us (including yours truly) might not be very smart but no one could be so stupid as to be fooled this way, esp. such a shrewd and successful character. Worst movie ever in this context.
i stumbled across this when i was about 14/15 late at night and instantly loved it.amazing story..full of twists and turns.brilliant performances, great music.the card scene on the train is one of my favourite of all time..so memorable.total classic.i imagine theyll remake it and destroy it.i wont be watching
OF COURSE IT IS its one of the best movies ever one of them you CANT make a sequel too it won 7 academy awards in 1973 (including best picture) it got a great soundtrack so if you like movies that takes place in the 30's and scott joplin then this is the movie for you
I am a fan of John Scarne, who was a mathematical genius and a magician. Hired by the casinos to help catch cheaters. The fancy card dealing in this movie was his moves....
it's true very few films have that tongue in cheek logical comedy. It's why i like the oceans films. this film is amazing. if you like this movie check out Emperor of The North(pole). Even the original taking of pelham 123 was good (all mta employees in ny are as jaded as that). The new one was awesome too, but not as funny.
About Newman's advocacy of New Testament sinful gay rights. Call this number (1-888-487-5393) for a homosexual cure. There is a great bio on Newman (Paul Newman: the Dream has ended!) at amazon.
I first saw this movie when I was about 13. It was a school outing paid for by each of the students. At the time, The Entertainer from The Sting was an unusual top 40 entry and the movie made interest from that.
I was too young to fully understand the film in those days, but it did make me wary about swindlers.
As The Sting is a period drama, it's unlikely to ever appear archaic. For those who haven't seen it, it's an excellent DVD to grab from the bargain bin at your local supermarket.
Great Movie!
