Get a block of Sal Ammmoniac (find on ebay) and rub your bad tip across it; it will fix the worst tip you have quickly. The block will probably outlive you too.
I've never seen a tip that couldn't be brought back to life easily with this stuff.
so every time you done with the soldring iron before you put away you have to claen it and tin the tip and put it away so to make sure after i claen i tin it and turn it off and put it away and if i dont after i claen tin the tip i can end up eatting the tip away let me no what im sayuing is right becase im have a probum to were my tip seems to eat away form time to time
Yes, I don't use it because it doesn't clean the impurities from the tip and you need the steam from the sponge to do that. With the brass tip cleaner it only removes the solder.
@kysrs0ze i put solder on the tip and wip on sponge then stab it in some flux paste then i got from ernzomatic then add more solder the rust and black will bubble off and then wip on sponge then add more solder thats what i did my tip was black like old 20 year old car oil black
Norman (or others) : What are your feelings on those metal "sponge" cleaners that you plunge the tip into? I believe they're brass. I use one now and I find it works excellent - perfectly clean tips in just a second with no thermal shock. But I notice you don't reccomend them, curious why?
