Actually, drugs would be safer than they are now if the animal testing phase was eliminated. Many studies have shown that animals predict correctly for humans less than 50% of the time: worse than tossing a coin!

@nothomonotsapienswow You are referring in this instance to the Journal of the American Medical Association. According to the US FDA 92% of new drugs fail in clinical trials, after they have passed all the safety tests in animals. US FDA (2004) "Innovation or Stagnation, Challenge and Opportunity on the Critical Path to new Medical Products" ie the animal tests are wrong 92% of the time. how does that compare to your figure?

@noratmedicine All I'm saying is that if it wasn't for those animal tests that give us a 18% success, our chance of producing the right drugs would be a loooot decreased.. Just think about it.. If we didn't do those tests we would randomly provide people with any drugs scientists suppose that might work.. and believe me that wouldn't be any efficient.. thousands of people would die just to save several animals raised in a laboratory(they don't even affect environmental balance)...

@nothomonotsapienswow Problem with even that 8% success rate is that it is not possible to knwo which 8% were ciorrect for humans until theya re given to humans, in other words the animal 'tests' are 100% worthless. The real reason theya re done is for legal protection as anything will pass, inc. strychnine, cyanide, arsenic, botulin, asbestos, DDT, benzene, HIV infected blood and cigarettes to name a few.

@nothomonotsapienswow Virtually every substance that harms humans and pollutes the environment passes animal 'tests'. We are harmed by them, big business is protected legally and therefore financially (against litigation) by them. And about 150 million animals are used in all experiments each year...and no diseases cured either.

Definitely there are people who would take advantage of this and act "immoraly", but it isn't always tht way.. animal tests aren't 100% worthless in fact they are 100% worthfull.. but it seems that you can't understand that they are mostly carried out in order to discard inappropriate drugs rather than to confirm their suitability for man.. and even if there wasn't any credibility in animal testing.. they

I'll start with your new claims now...Experiments on dogs to develop transplant techniques were disastrous. Hundreds of dogs were used yet the first human patients died because of complications which arose when the technique was applied to the first human patients.
