Seriously, this makes a wonderful first encounter with Wozzeck, since the visuals are so concrete and direct, and the casting and acting is great. Videos of stage performances are rewarding to watch after you know what is going on, since they are more abstract and mythic.
And don't be afraid to laugh; it is for sure grotesque. It's a horror opera. Laugh, then have bad dreams. And notice the music. Music is primary in opera.
This is a powerful opera that addresses class oppression. Wozzeck is patronized by his arrogant superiors who have NO idea of his life and those of his class.
I look forward to seeing it this Saturday at the Met.

@LilMaryLou it's not the third person. it's the old german way of superiors speaking to inferiors (the opposite of Sie). it's understood to be the second person.
