@Rawxm But England is more than just a nation of Christians too! While I love this song, it only really represents the message of the Church of England, rather than the entire country
Glorious! Have heard this hymn, in "Chariots" and "Calendar Girls", loved it but didn't know how to find it until the wedding of Will and Kate last week. Can't get enough! Am a child of my beloved US of A, but echoes of my Brit heritage still ring in my heart.

I'm proud of my English Nonconformist Protestant Heritage as an American. I view this song as one of the most beautiful tunes ever written, which expresses the highest emotional love for ones homeland. Instead of being considered leftist/socialist like some do, why couldn't it more easily be seen as expressing LIBERTY and FREEDOM as these terms were originally defined by The Founding Fathers of the USA. Socialism will imprison as sure as feudalism.
@DickWhittington1000 Unfortunately" Socialism will imprison as sure as feudalism" doesn't hold water here, why?, cos there is a ruling class that thinks money=might is a God given right to rule!!! (as I believe in the US too) why should that be?? all men are equal under God? are they not?
@trackieben The Company known as Britain as nothing to be proud of.There's nothing to gloat about when so many have and still go being murdered in the name of greed. The empire, theres only been one, that shifts in name from generation to generation, it's still very much in action.

One need not be a Brit to feel a profound stirring of the heart when Parry's
wonderful music finds perfect expression as it joins hands with William Blake's luminous verses. I can think of no national song that comes close to the almost apocalyptic, visionary splendor of Blake's lyrics. I'm an American and this hymn makes me say God save the queen and may the British Isles live forever.
I think this should be our national anthem!, it really represents England as a single nation, where as god save the queen is more of a british anthem because she represents all four of the home nations.
scotland have their own, wales have their own and ireland have their own and i think it's about time we stand out and have a national anthem that really makes us stand out as being English :)
@kstandidge Nonsense! The 4 nations within the UK may have popular traditional songs, but they all have only one national anthem which is God Save The Queen. There are no other official national anthems. Jerusalem is NOT the British (nor even the English) national anthem.
It's a lovely piece, enjoy it for what it is. The 'Celtic' peoples of the British Isles are simply those who adopted the Celtic culture in times long past - they are not Celtic ethnically at all. Recent studies have shown that the DNA of white British people goes back 10.000 years to the last ice-age with hardly any diluting with: La Tenne, Roman, Anglo-Saxon, Norman or anyone else.
In 1916 Jerusalem was a dust-bin full of garbage and poverty, but I guess the song refers to a "spiritual or celestial Jerusalem" which must be built in England. Anyway, the physical Jerusalem - the actual city of walls, gardens, taxes and people - is the eternal and indivisible capital of the State of Israel. City of David and the Jewish People.

I, too, am an American, but my grandparents were English (Cheshire to be exact). I am proud of my English and Anglican roots. On my only trip to England I felt as if I were coming home and I long to return. To answer dsindc, "there will always be an England".
Another beautiful version of the beautiful song "Jerusalem."
I like the anthem "God Save the Queen.", too. Of course, in America, we sing the tune of "God Save the Queen" to a patriotic song of our own, called "My Country 'Tis of Thee."
As for "Jerusalem", it is an elegant song, I always liked it after hearing it first in "Chariots of Fire." I learned to play it on piano, and recently found the words of this song.
I agree with switzvideo and vacherno3. I'm also American, but my grandparents were English. I'm Anglican and treasure my English roots. When I visited Westminster Abbey the first time I was overwhelmed .. like being a Jew visiting the Wailing Wall for the first time. My knees felt weak. I don't want to live in a world without England.
@switzvideo Thanks for recognising Jerusalem as a British (actually English song) rather than American. I say this because my experience is that Americans tend to forget that there are other cultures and peoples in the World and think that the US is the originator of all things. Quite a amusing actually but sometimes comes across as being ignorant too. Disappointing as the UK has been such a big influence on American history and culture
I was confused by the part where you assume England will become a Muslim country. The shitty grammar & punctuation threw me off a bit as well, because I was under the assumption that a proud Anglo-Saxon would be well versed in their own language.
well, I am not an Anglo-Saxon in the first place. Secondly, I do not feel the need to be perfect when writing comments because it is YOUTUBE not an English paper.
This little pisspot ov a country of ours. is ours. and unfortunatlly it is under invasion by ever toss pot that thinks its there right to come to the our land and bleed us poor english men and women dry. Englands green and pleasant is dissapering in a sea of foriegn nationals Yes we need multi culturism am all 4 it but we the english man is a dying breed God bless my home land we need it
Sorry but these "tosspots" come from the real pisspot's of the world. Wartorn countries with unethical governments. Of corse they want to come here, can you blame them? I'd want to come to England if I lived in chop-off-your-hand-istan. I dont think thats a reason to call them toss pots though.
Well not really mate, alot of immigrants come over to this country for the welfare system we provide, if your not English you get fucking everything you want it doesent work for the English
love the song and we do need a better anthem but you can't choose a national anthem after a city in Israel and it can't be this focused towards religion. It would never be approved in this day and age.
It's not really. Jeruselam refers to a time when a heavenly and perfect place existed in England. The song is saying that we will never quit until a perfect and heavenly society exists in England.
i believe this song should be our national anthem and i am a protestant, loyal to the queen yet this song gives shivers down my back, it really does make you feel proud to be ENGLISH. Still, Long Live The Queen.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
we all have opinions and mine is i don't give a shit about the queen, I'd rather we had a president and stop giving royalty tax payers money for no good reason apart from a spot of tourism.
why are we all attacking this comment? He didn't say he was going to kill the queen, he just said he didnt like the song. I'm not the songs biggest fan, mainly because of the religion.
I wish this was the English National anthem! Scottish have the flower of Scotland so it's only fair! Either we both have one each, or we only have one.
@mothersuperior03 I suppose one of the problems and the irony is at the time the mythology behind Jerusalem would have occured i.e the time of Christ most of the Ancient Britons were Celtic and would today be classed as Welsh. Obviosly that might be a bit of a problem if one is trying to celebrate an identity which is not Welsh when the song celebrates a celtic past and a time when everyone was Welsh lol
@artberry Absolute rubbish. The ancient Britons were celtic, yes, but that doesn't make them Welsh! And according to new research they assimilated with the later Angles, Saxons and Jutes contributing to what became the "English"!
@chuggawugga2 Perhaps an oversimplification, Cornwall has an English Celtic identity. However it's difficult to have a distinct cultural identity based on assimilating everyone else. One ends up with cultural identities which to some extent are based on denial of aspects on one's cultural history and ancestry which are then illusionary to some extent . It's probably easier to call oneself British. Like Americans call themselves Americans in spite of a huge variety of origins. :)
@artberry I would disagree with you here in that since the Norman invasion of 1066 there were no invasions or significant immigrations (apart from the Huguenots) until the mid 20th century. So just over 900 years passed in which the English and British peoples were shaped and gained common identity and culture before the more recent immigration from the Commonwealth in the 50s onwards, which has greatly altered what it means to be British or indeed English.
@chuggawugga2 Yes I would probably agree with you on some aspect of more recent immigration policy. It's perhaps ironic these policies have been dressed up as socialism. When in reality we are a rich former imperial power taking advantage of a primary resource the developing nations have to offer namely their workforce, which we import as cheap labour and to fill gaps in our labour market. Thus depriving these nations of the cream of their labour resources. It's not Socialism it's Imperialism.
@chuggawugga2 you mean those violent tribes? How disgusting. They were worse than Islamic fundamentalists. No wonder we are so hateful.Patriotism is just an excuse.
@askido351 Are you saying the celts were violent tribes? If so, you are correct, but the Romans, Vikings and Angles, Saxons and Jutes were just as violent. As for the rest of your post, I'm really not sure what you mean.
@artberry Well I think the Celtic issue within the United kingdom is very complicated... I think the song represents England to day as well... But at the end of the day we have two clear choices... England continues the Union with British customs i.e with God save the queen... Or we start to admit the Union is also dieing and we revert towards the Kingdom of England with our own anthem. The government won't allow us Englishness, because they know once we all turn English, the union is over.
Possibly but division can also serve the purposes of the conqueror (or in this case government). Personally having been born and brought up in Monmouthshire, Having both English and Welsh ancestry. I've no problems equating a Celtic heritage with Englishness. But I wonder to what degree these cultural divisions are an illusion . Because in reality we are all quite mixed. Maybe that's the problem with this hymn it shatters those illusions.
@artberry I agree, most of us don't have pure Celtic roots. I am one of Celtic and Germanic roots However, for the last 1000 years my family has been in Scotland and England. I find it a great shame that the English are described impure, by many Scots or Irish who are impure themselves! The governments in the UK are looking backwards... The Empire is over, so they want to end the UK... I say we stick together and build ourselves back up too what we once were...
@mothersuperior03 Well yes, the irony is whilst, we are told the Empire is over and we can't go it alone, nationalism is a bad thing etc. Ever increasing loss of national sovereignty to the EU and ultimately to a Global New World Order, will mean ever more loss of individual freedoms and the erosion of democracy and is ultimately an exercise in world domination by a corporate elite minority. So is the very thing they condemn, but worse.
This melody is by a Victorian who loved the British Empire - Sir Edward Elgar.
Hence, while the word 'England' appears, following William Blake's poem, the spirit being referred to is not England, but all of Great Britain.
Note: England has never been a great nation. Neither has Scotland. Nor Wales. And not Ireland. Only Britain has been great. Only Britain can be great. We, the inheriters of this nation, must cherish it
churchillwinstonspen...what a load of shite you spout William Blake was a most patriotic ENGLISHMAN make no mistake you politically correct knob. If he meant Great Britain then why didn't he write Great Britain..Also Hubert Parry wrote the music and not Elgar....In Englands green and pleasant land...
I live in the heart of England, a truly beautiful part of it - Herefordshire - all green meadows, lovely woods, red soil, plenty of orchards and gentle rolling hills, small towns and vilages with black and white timbered and thatched cottages and welcoming pubs and gorgeous ancient churches and a graceful cathedral in Hereford city. "Jerusalem" is often sung at weddings here as in the rest of England - it's a hymn of which most people know all the words so don't need the hymn sheet!
Here here, england is a joke these days, i wish we had the sort of pride that america do. Political correctness be damned, if we had been worried about that centuries ago, england wouldn't exist!
Heard this at the Kirkin o the Tartan today...I am in awe and enraptured. (I'm german btw :P) I'm jealous of your beautiful anthem, even though it talks about god ;D
Britain Will Become Great Once Again And Thats How Our Nation Will Remain With Our British Hearts Beating And As The Union Jack Flies We Shal Fight Side By Side With Our Heads Held High We Shal Keep Marching Foreword Never To Surrender Honour To Our Fallen Brothers Always To Remember We Shal Live On Through The Ages Never To Be Outdone Always To Stand Strong And United As One Forever Shal Our Nation Be Great Forever Shal We Defend We Will Not Flag Or Fail We Will Go To The End
Proud to see that people have the same national feeling like me. Even thou i'm not born in Britain I fell a great love for the country. And at any time defend it to the last breath to honour the fact, that never since William the conqure gained power, have this great island been conqured.
I'm gonna join the pro side here lol, did you write the poem? its good. i'm 15 and i don't think people my age these days respect the meaning of these songs.
yea i did write it but the last two lines are from a speech by the GREAT Sir Winston Churchill, glad you like it :) but i agree with you. many youth's of today dont respect the meaning of these songs, but most of the time they have no respect at all neither for our heritage and for what people have done and are doing for this country (Veterans, The Forces) and im glad to see a lad of your age showing great respect for our nation and for that i show you respect
You are such a great Englishman. As an American, I have the utmost respect for someone like you who feels the need to preserve the great and honorable foundations of your home. Britain's Protestant heritage and the men who have fought for it should not be forgotten.
I'm about as patriotic an American as you'll meet, but I really hate that English youths can't understand why you shouldn't give up your glorious heritage for the sickening political correctness the country is obsessed with today.
respect to you also, i agree with everything you say and the american people are as patriotic as they come, and i belieave that all british youths should be also since their heritage is what makes them who they are a british citizen but as you say, they are giving it up due to the political correctness the country is undergoing, and same as i said before they need to understand and respect their heritage.
I'm with you. England needs to stop rejecting its past greatness to appease the Muslims. This political correctness that is tearing apart English culture is going to spread to America soon, since we're about to be taken over by politically-correct Socialist progressives.
Is there a party in England that supports the beliefs that we're talking about - opposition to the progressive political correctness and lack of patriotism and faith that is corrupting English society?
I'm with hjklmno. I'm the same age as him, but I'm a very patriotic American. However, it makes me truly sad that England is disgracing her roots in faith and patriotism for this modern politically correct movement.
Englishmen need to wake up and see what's happening to their country. I want England to be a valuable ally of the United States. We're both great countries at our cores.
England needs this song as her anthem to preserve a great and beautiful past, in these turbulent times.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
What is an American? You have no identity, you are about to become the laughing stock of the world by electing Obama.
There WILL always be an England but whether it is the one we love and adore is another matter. Common sense may not prevail but it will not be in my life time that England turns to shite.
Don't include me in "you". I'm not supporting that treasonous Socialist asshole. He supports the same kind of thing that's happening to your country.
And I'm fighting FOR England preserving its former greatness. Don't be such a fucking asshole, unless you're one of the pieces of garbage supporting this progressive politically correct hogwash. Then you can just shut the hell up.
i find that ironic- americans usually demand british people to look more to the future instead of the past
but i agree with the politically correctness of it all
anyway- it would have been terrible for america if McCain was voted president... think of it- an economically crippled america goes off for another few wars costing more than the propagandised taxpayers would like and losses of american life 'greater than anticipated' due to poor training and sheer incompitance

I was confused by the part where you assume England will become a Muslim country. The shitty grammar & punctuation threw me off a bit as well, because I was under the assumption that a proud Anglo-Saxon would be well versed in their own language.

well, I am not an Anglo-Saxon in the first place. Secondly, I do not feel the need to be perfect when writing comments because it is YOUTUBE not an English paper.

love the song and we do need a better anthem but you can't choose a national anthem after a city in Israel and it can't be this focused towards religion. It would never be approved in this day and age.

Why should Israel's anthem be about building a metaphorical Jerusalem in England and refer to the British industrial revolution.

it is not about jerusalem it is about englands industry and how it has changed the country.

It's not really. Jeruselam refers to a time when a heavenly and perfect place existed in England. The song is saying that we will never quit until a perfect and heavenly society exists in England.

mothersuperior03 2 years ago 10
@mothersuperior03 I suppose one of the problems and the irony is at the time the mythology behind Jerusalem would have occured i.e the time of Christ most of the Ancient Britons were Celtic and would today be classed as Welsh. Obviosly that might be a bit of a problem if one is trying to celebrate an identity which is not Welsh when the song celebrates a celtic past and a time when everyone was Welsh lol
artberry 1 year ago
@artberry Absolute rubbish. The ancient Britons were celtic, yes, but that doesn't make them Welsh! And according to new research they assimilated with the later Angles, Saxons and Jutes contributing to what became the "English"!
chuggawugga2 1 year ago
@chuggawugga2 Perhaps an oversimplification, Cornwall has an English Celtic identity. However it's difficult to have a distinct cultural identity based on assimilating everyone else. One ends up with cultural identities which to some extent are based on denial of aspects on one's cultural history and ancestry which are then illusionary to some extent . It's probably easier to call oneself British. Like Americans call themselves Americans in spite of a huge variety of origins. :)
artberry 1 year ago
@artberry I would disagree with you here in that since the Norman invasion of 1066 there were no invasions or significant immigrations (apart from the Huguenots) until the mid 20th century. So just over 900 years passed in which the English and British peoples were shaped and gained common identity and culture before the more recent immigration from the Commonwealth in the 50s onwards, which has greatly altered what it means to be British or indeed English.
chuggawugga2 1 year ago
@chuggawugga2 Yes I would probably agree with you on some aspect of more recent immigration policy. It's perhaps ironic these policies have been dressed up as socialism. When in reality we are a rich former imperial power taking advantage of a primary resource the developing nations have to offer namely their workforce, which we import as cheap labour and to fill gaps in our labour market. Thus depriving these nations of the cream of their labour resources. It's not Socialism it's Imperialism.
artberry 1 year ago
@chuggawugga2 and therfore?
gramule 1 year ago
@chuggawugga2 you mean those violent tribes? How disgusting. They were worse than Islamic fundamentalists. No wonder we are so hateful.Patriotism is just an excuse.
askido351 1 year ago
@askido351 Are you saying the celts were violent tribes? If so, you are correct, but the Romans, Vikings and Angles, Saxons and Jutes were just as violent. As for the rest of your post, I'm really not sure what you mean.
chuggawugga2 1 year ago
@artberry Well I think the Celtic issue within the United kingdom is very complicated... I think the song represents England to day as well... But at the end of the day we have two clear choices... England continues the Union with British customs i.e with God save the queen... Or we start to admit the Union is also dieing and we revert towards the Kingdom of England with our own anthem. The government won't allow us Englishness, because they know once we all turn English, the union is over.
mothersuperior03 1 year ago
Possibly but division can also serve the purposes of the conqueror (or in this case government). Personally having been born and brought up in Monmouthshire, Having both English and Welsh ancestry. I've no problems equating a Celtic heritage with Englishness. But I wonder to what degree these cultural divisions are an illusion . Because in reality we are all quite mixed. Maybe that's the problem with this hymn it shatters those illusions.
artberry 1 year ago
@artberry I agree, most of us don't have pure Celtic roots. I am one of Celtic and Germanic roots However, for the last 1000 years my family has been in Scotland and England. I find it a great shame that the English are described impure, by many Scots or Irish who are impure themselves! The governments in the UK are looking backwards... The Empire is over, so they want to end the UK... I say we stick together and build ourselves back up too what we once were...
mothersuperior03 1 year ago
@mothersuperior03 Well yes, the irony is whilst, we are told the Empire is over and we can't go it alone, nationalism is a bad thing etc. Ever increasing loss of national sovereignty to the EU and ultimately to a Global New World Order, will mean ever more loss of individual freedoms and the erosion of democracy and is ultimately an exercise in world domination by a corporate elite minority. So is the very thing they condemn, but worse.

THIS ISNT A BRITISH SONG IT IS ENGLISH!
Englandrevival 3 years ago 43
Revival,
Why pursue the little englander approach?
This melody is by a Victorian who loved the British Empire - Sir Edward Elgar.
Hence, while the word 'England' appears, following William Blake's poem, the spirit being referred to is not England, but all of Great Britain.
Note: England has never been a great nation. Neither has Scotland. Nor Wales. And not Ireland. Only Britain has been great. Only Britain can be great. We, the inheriters of this nation, must cherish it

"Jerusalem" is often sung at weddings here as in the rest of England - it's a hymn of which most people know all the words so don't need the hymn sheet!

yea i did write it but the last two lines are from a speech by the GREAT Sir Winston Churchill, glad you like it :) but i agree with you. many youth's of today dont respect the meaning of these songs, but most of the time they have no respect at all neither for our heritage and for what people have done and are doing for this country (Veterans, The Forces) and im glad to see a lad of your age showing great respect for our nation and for that i show you respect
GazzUnique 3 years ago
You are such a great Englishman. As an American, I have the utmost respect for someone like you who feels the need to preserve the great and honorable foundations of your home. Britain's Protestant heritage and the men who have fought for it should not be forgotten.
I'm about as patriotic an American as you'll meet, but I really hate that English youths can't understand why you shouldn't give up your glorious heritage for the sickening political correctness the country is obsessed with today.
TheNilvarg 3 years ago
respect to you also, i agree with everything you say and the american people are as patriotic as they come, and i belieave that all british youths should be also since their heritage is what makes them who they are a british citizen but as you say, they are giving it up due to the political correctness the country is undergoing, and same as i said before they need to understand and respect their heritage.

Good to hear it. I wish the Muslims could see it that way.

Englishmen need to wake up and see what's happening to their country. I want England to be a valuable ally of the United States. We're both great countries at our cores.
England needs this song as her anthem to preserve a great and beautiful past, in these turbulent times.
