i prefer using a DE. not too worried about being lightweight. as long as your hardwares up to date it would be good. i may try using flux box next time i need to speed up a junker.
one question, what is it you guys prefer about just fluxbox? (functionality wise) because I just couldn't deal with it.
it good but it can be boring when you get setup the menus up and the backgrounds basicly the basic things with what the normal gui (like windows) already got but i just use gnome/kde/xfce or lxde to get me started
@hellertytus That's bullcrap, there are a lot of reason to not like fluxbox. I personally like a lot of things about it, but can't use it because of some severe limitations. It has nothing to do with liking (or not) customizing the desktop. That said, fluxbox is nice, but very limited. It'd be nice to see a more modern implementation of the same idea. I'm leaning more towards going to tiling DE's nowadays.
@Omayga260 nope. I am a programmer, working with linux, ssh nearly every day; terminal is almost my wallpaper. But for the normal users who try to explore linux, this will scare them a lot
@trancaothai Most people who explore linux are willing to learn. But for those who arent well they cant install fluxbox anyway so it doesnt matter. I personally do 85% of my stuff in terminal.

that sucks, I prefer icons and applets which enable me to oneclick or run things from krunner. Just count the number of steps you need to go through to launch a single application. I hate this kind of de's they're not ergonomic at all.
It's a WMM not an operating system if you meant "Windows" you're thinking of NT vs. Gnome, KDE, Fluxbox managers.
Though I like IceWMM and XFCE.

Good for old PC's. I have gentoo with KDE on my i7 and it runs as fast as I'll ever need.

I like fluxbox, but Im using PekWM + dzen2. Still very lightweight but PekWM feels a little more comfortable to work with :)

Hi!
I'm using fluxbox and like it so much. However, I don't know how to set up Volume by hot key like you do. Please tell me the trick.
Thank you very much!

the last time i enjoyed Gnome was in 1999, but even then, i prefered enlightenment....imo e16 is the best.
i do like a minimalistic desktop.

fluxbox is easy on resources, but there are some annoying problems with it that force me to use xfce.

@Tobiash87 It just shows you know shit all about openbox. I can either go on my desktop and click an icon, or in openbox just press super(winkey)+w.

@Tobiash87 in fluxbox there are "hotkeys" which you configure to launch an application with just a key combination.
martmelee 1 year ago
@martmelee is there any kind of shortcut management, as in KDE, or can such “hotkeys” conflict with the current application's shortcuts?
TangerineTux 1 year ago
@TangerineTux No, the hotkeys are a totally different thing, you can't screw up shortcuts for using hotkeys.

OH my clicking a mouse button is so HARD.
HillaryHitler 9 months ago
@HillaryHitler No, you just need more steps to launch your apps, instead of one click running them.
Tobiash87 9 months ago
@Tobiash87 it suggest to TRY fluxbox, not to MUST try fluxbox, and kde sucks for its "ergonomic" stucture.
