Was that Mr Lucas dancing as one of the Black & White Minstrels? I'm sure he made a cameo appearance in that..His hair was a lot shorter than it was in the show early on tho..Why did he leave? He was in EASTEMDERS at the start, wasn't he? Show's like this always lose something special when someone of the cast that starred for so long leaves but Mr Spooner was very funny I thought..lol..What was the dance/music number about at the end? Where were the Graces traced 2 in the end? Family Tree??
The 2 Mr Graces were brilliant in this show..I love how these 2 old geriatric wrinklys managed to get so many beaufiful women to hang around for so long..That girl sat on Old Mr Graces knee when the Nurse came in and switched on the lights was fookin' fit as a fiddle..the hoop on her as she got up from his lap so the nurse could take his pulse..Lordy lordy! I could have a field day with that,,,lol..HAROLD BENNETT was a great actor ...He played his role to a tee.was it like that 4 women in work
@nzlotrfan Waitin for the Robert E Lee is the final song. I know if from the 1955 Dean Martin album "Swingin' Down Yonder" recorded at Capitol Records. A lot of people have done versions of it. The song refers to the steamboat named after Robert E Lee.
I enjoyed this episode immensely until the last scene. How was this funny? Blackface... really?! I expected better than this from the writers of this show. The John Inman dance was hilarious... I originally voted up but had to recant it...
i agree with some people here the show is not racist at all and i dont find black face racist at all its most likely always some one black who starts crap like this if its someone white i say grow up
@NightSurfer777 agreed! im mixed and i dont think anything is racist unless it's actually meant to offend someone...why do you think South Park is so popular?
The crew of this show are not racist as throught its run. Four foreign characters have appeared- a young boy who spots Santa, Mohammed, Stanford and the longest running was Seymour
As a woman, a queer, a black person, someone who is middle class, someone fat, there isn't a single episode of AYBS that doesn't make a mockery of some aspect of my person. In case you hadn't noticed, the entire show's humor is based on creating characters that are caricatures, and laughing at them. I don't think the writers of the show were any more racist than they were sexist, classist, sizist, or homophobic. No group of people were safe from the mockery, and that's why I love this show.
This is ridiculous that people are considering it racists just because they painted their face black but when they were making fun of the welsh, scots and english no one gives a fuck. Ok folks let's agree to disagree on the racism issue. There are those who see humour in everything, even the obviously racist Blackface and victims of racism especially us black folks who have every right to protest against such humour. You have to experience racism first-hand like being spit on and called a monkey in order to stop laughing when Blackface shows up on screen. All in all, AYBS was a great show.
I guess Mrs Slocombe is racist too because she died her hair red on occasions... and before anyone gives me some jiff that having red hair doesnt make you a different race, biologically there is no such thing as race, most countries have their own idea of what substitutes race, just because us British think there are only 6 or so races does not mean every culture/society does. In fact very far from it.
I never understood why some people are so quick to defend racism. If someone says that something hurts them, then that should be it. It is like watching someone get punched and telling them it was a joke, and that they should take it.
@Abena20 Calling it "racism" in the first place is like calling "Huckleberry Finn" or the Original "Star Trek" racist. They were the opposite: They often depicted racism and social ignorance as unjust and absurd, using comedy, ethical or moral plight or complex situations. The problem, Abena is not that "us people" are defending racism- it is that you are failing to see that the writers are Speaking out against racism using non politically correct methods when it was a heavier problem.
@neverflybound Stat Trek? Really? Star Trek was *about* diversity and tolerance. It was a pioneer for its time as it had minorities in non-stereotypical leading roles. That is not AYBS's message. The comparison is absurd.
Secondly, Star Trek never did anything that would cause someone to label it racist.
@Abena20 What, exactly, IS the message on that episode? See, therein lies the problem. As with many people labeling Huck Finn as racist, you Missed the message and have yet to acknowledge that. They did not do something racist, they were making FUN of racism. You continue to flatly refuse to admit your error. AYBS made FUN of people that were intolerant of homosexuality, classes or race. Your accusations are ignorant and unfair. Try examining it again withOUT the knee jerk reaction.
@neverflybound Explain how black face makes fun of racism. There was no anti-racism message in this episode, and if AYBS was committed to fighting racism, why doesn't it have a diverse cast?
You also said that AYBS makes fun of Jews and gays. If they did that, is it so hard to believe that they don't like black people as well. Could it be that the production team is made of a bunch of bigots? I'm glad I stopped watching when I did.
@Abena20 If you actually READ the posts you 'd have seen it already. They were not performing blackface. They were making fun of Blackface Performance. You are so determined to whip out the Race Card, you're blind to it. And yes- I said they make fun of Jews and gays and EVERYTHING else. But the method of making fun was to show that being bigoted against jews and gays was nonsense. Again- a point you flat refuse to see. Now feel free to stop badmouthing a show that you Fail To Understand.
@neverflybound If you can't explain how this is attacking racism, which is an absurd conclusion indeed, your assertion has little credibility. Secondly, I'm tired of bigots like you dismissing racism by using the term "race card," but I shouldn't expect racist and homophobes to have a problem with bigotry should I? When blacks, gays, and Jews are attacked, it's just comedy to you.
@Abena20 I did explain it. Clearly. Repeatedly. But you REFUSE to see it. And calling me a "Bigot" now, simply because you're way too stubborn to understand the BASICS of comedy doesn't help your case. YOU failed to tell me what , exactly, was the message of the show, too. I explained it as Such- They are MAKING FUN OF BLACKFACE. It's clear. It makes FUN of what was a racist activity. They Made FUN of that. What part of that makes it so difficult for you to understand?
@Abena20 And what the HELL are you going on about homophobes now?! John Inman would roll in his grave knowing that is what you thought the show starring him represented. You do not care about the reality- the ONLY thing you care about is making accusations. You claim racism where there isn't any and then cry foul when others try to tell you such. Blacks, gays and jews were NOT attacked. And for your information, idiot- I am not white.
@Abena20 ah but I'm, according to your outlandish claims, a BIGOT and a Racist, simply because I see a show that is promoting anti-racism as not racist and you don't. You think it's racist simply because you refuse to wrap your head around the idea that a group of white people might actually NOT be racist! Seems you are the racist one.
@neverflybound Yes, I do think you are a bigot. I don't see why, out of nowhere, you said you weren't white. Your color is irrelevant. What matters is that you are supporting a racist show, and that makes you despicable.
I don't think they all are racist. Wendy Richards clearly isn't because she didn't participate.
@Abena20 I must be racist against my own race then, eh? No -it is not automatically a racist show just because you're too stupid to know what is racism and what isn't.
@Abena20 You're incapable of responding intelligently to ANY of the points I have made. Probably because you have no grounds at all to refute them. Instead, you just keep playing the race card and it not only makes you despicable- It makes you a fool. You have yet to make any clear points on what is racist. You have yet to tell me WHAT, EXACTLY, was the message of the show (You have no clue what it is, obviously) You cannot explain how it's supposedly homophobic- You only spout accusations.
@Abena20 I checked out your channel. Seems you are doing a lot of trolling lately, judging by the comments others have left for you. If your feelings are hurt by watching this episode of AYBS, then here's an idea, DON'T WATCH IT. I'm sure that's the same advice you would give to others regarding the gay / alternative videos you have on your YouTube channel. Stop pointing the finger and preaching your "opinion" at people just because your feelings are hurt. It only makes you seem close-minded.
@JacuzziBooty How could I have known this episode was racist if I hadn't watched it first? What a ridiculous thing to say. In any case, if you are saying that people have the right to attack others because of their race, then everyone else has the right to fight back against bigotry. No one has to sit back and take this crap, and I certainly won't because you told me to.
@Abena20 "It is like watching someone get punched and telling them that it was a joke..."
The Stooges created a legacy of making people laugh at someone getting punched. It is usually things that make us at least little bit uncomfortable that also make us laugh. We laugh at things that are stupid, things that are shocking, things that are absurd, when people fall down, when people are made to look a fool. Arguably, all of those are situations where someone is hurt physically or emotionally.
@Abena20 "It is like watching someone get punched and telling them that it was a joke..."

@Abena20 i watched on a tv show once someone talking and he said you can call someone or a group something providing that u can prove it right and that its true....for instance u can call someone a B@st@rd providing that he is(its not right to do it but u can do it)......and in some instances what most people call racist is nothing more than saying the truth!
@Abena20 Right, so everything anyone can do or say might be banned if someone says it harms them. For example, when someone criticizes President Obama it's attacked as racism. By your logic, we should stop criticizing his policies because someone cried racism.
@fjccommish i once heard a looney left guy say that only white people can be racist which as a statement is total crap and the most stupid thing i have ever heard. in my view all people are equal but not all views are equal otherwise facism equals humanism and would just be stupid. the real evils of the world should be searched and stamped upon. why can't people just be rational and live according to facts instead of fairy tales. as a species we are on a crossroads i think. long live freedom.
@tsunamenightlight I am one of the few Jews who watch this show....I saw a lot of comments made about Jews and money when Mr Goldberg was on the show....
13:45 to 13:57 Ms. Brahams sports a great set of knockers!!! Reminds me of Mr. Grainger's retirement dinner dance at the store. She wore that hot looking red dress without a bra and showed legs. Such display beats that brown sales dress by-far.
The joke isn't the blackface. The joke is the timeline. Think about it. They did OLD TIME Welsh, then Scottish and next Sommerset. Obviously, the next comedic leap is mid-19th century American minstrel show. Ergo, wacky timeline = joke. Lighten up people. And to those screaming RACISM! - look up 'cakewalking'. It was a dance done by blacks performing for whites where [unbeknownst to the whites] the blacks were making fun of them. Wouldn't that be racism too? It's poking fun at each other. Chill.
cant we all be friends here, almost every comedy show is racist. does that mean we shouldnt watch them? no.. just enjoy what you like to watch. end of stpry...
I just came on to this video to say the ending music is fucking awesome. I love it. I'm watching the episode from the series torrent that I downloaded, and although mtwini09's uploads are of higher quality, I just wanted to say I LOVE IT!
wow... where ever you go people's mouths are watering to do blackface, say the n or f word...and the sad thing is everyone just sits back and laughs like it's all in fun.. how wonderful it must be to be part of the group that dominates the world...you're trained to not care and not see racism...thank you to those who do care and refuse to be lulled into this white social ignorance.
@brandesq Can you be anymore of an ass? Not everyone thinks like that. So don't say it's all white people who do. Their sure as hell are probably some racists in other nationalities. Besides if you can't take a damn joke why the hell are you here on a Are You Being Served? video?
@Abena20 And this is racist how? I don't see how it is. I honestly think people look into stuff WAY to seriously anymore and find racism so easily so they can bitch about it.
@demonicprincess09 You don't understand how blackface is racist? Are you ignorant or just stupid? In either case, I would recommend picking up a history book or doing a google search on blackface until you understand.
@Abena20 Fuck off you stupid bitch. I get what Blackface is and honestly DON'T GIVE A FUCK! You're just some stupid fucking troll who really needs to go the fuck away. I've had it with your ass shut up I don't want to hear from you again. If you're so damn offended by this episode here's a piece of advice don't watch it. You want to get so butthurt over something that was done years ago and probably wasn't considered racist then fine but don't bitch to me about it. Go the fuck away already.
@demonicprincess09 You don't are about racism? Then you are obviously racist, but don't expect the rest of the world to tolerate hatred and bigotry like you do. Just like you have the right to ignore racism, we have the right to shut it down.
Though, I don't know what is worse, hate groups that are honest and upfront about their racism, or hypocrites like you who pretend it doesn't exist. In any case, you are both vile, and it's a shame you can't experience the pain you inflict on others.
@Abena20 IM FUCKING RACIST?! I NEVER ONCE SAID THAT AND I SURE AS HELL AINT! Omg you are such a fucking bitch. Fuck you you stupid little bitch. I am not racist. You don't know me so fuck off. For one I don't give a shit about the racism you see in this show cuz it was done years ago and you can't do anything about it but bitch and whine. You are definitely a thick headed stupid bitch. I said I didn't care about it not that I am. Learn to fucking read.
@Abena20 So... You always enjoyed the show, the camp jokes with Humphreys, the jewish jokes with Goldberg and so on... But when your race was made fun of- then you got offended and made all these comments? And you Speak Of Hypocrisy?
You thought it was funny when they made fun of everyone else. You clearly have no idea what "Comedy" is (and has always been) about.
@neverflybound I've never heard any Jewish jokes on this show. And I never saw Humphreys made fun of for being gay, but I haven't watched all of the episodes. Black face has never been comedy. It is pure hate.
@neverflybound "Claiming" So you're saying I'm lying now? I didn't hear any Jewish jokes on this show, and that's it. There are plenty of ways to make fun of racism without resorting to racism yourself. In addition, this episode was not about combating racism. There was no reason to include black face at all.
@Abena20 - You made a claim- that is called claiming. Now- you say you never heard Jewish jokes, but you missed all the times Goldberg added up figures while counting in Yiddish? And he's Jewish. They make fun of Slocoumbs weight, old people (Granger and Grace) being senile- So on and So on. They essentially bash stereotypes all the time. You are CLAIMING that you missed it. They were not performing blackface, they were Making Fun of Blackface performance. There's a clear difference. Get over it
@neverflybound Why should I get over it? Like I said, you people who defend racism are taking the side of the people at fault and blame the groups that are being attacked for not accepting their crap.
Secondly, you act as if everything that is offensive is equally offensive. Surely you can understand that somethings are more offensive than others.
Regarding Goldberg, I had to look him up to see who you were talking about. I didn't see most of his season.
@Abena20 "No people" here are defending racism. But it seems to me that you have decided that is the case- "Don't confuse me with facts! My mind is made up!"
You Do Not Have the Right to Go Through Life Unoffended.
Your claim that you're offended is based on the claim that the show was being Racist. Before you can make that claim, you need to demonstrate that the writers ARE racist and that was their intentions. You're complaining about a show that is known for NOT being Politically Correct.
The reason that the women were not blacked up is very simple. What the cast is doing is an imitation of The Black and White Minstrel show, in which the men were blacked up and the women were not.
Wow there must be lots of episodes you guys down there in Australia get to see that we don't see up here in Canada. They would NEVER show this episode here because it would be considered really racially offensive because of the final segment. I wonder what other episodes you have that I've never seen.
Thank you so much for posting these episodes. I've been watching them daily as they get posted. Such memories of watching them on our PBS station years ago - and the station is still airing them in order. I think right now they're entering season 8. Always enjoy watching to see what color hair Mrs. Slocombe will have. Look forward to the rest of the episodes. Again - THANKS!
@Hallinilla9 The description says that the Original AIR DATE was the 24th of December. Using my magical powers of deductive reasoning, I would guess is that they didn't film the episode the same day that it aired, and that he probably died after they shot this, but before it was shown on television.
@Hallinilla9 no it was filmed before his death, BUT, due to the time it takes to edit and release it to broadcast, it takes ruffly two to three months
it's just that that this special wasn't aired until three months after his death.

I'm just not clueless, as you are.
neverflybound 7 months ago
@neverflybound I never said that you were white.
Abena20 7 months ago
@Abena20 ah but I'm, according to your outlandish claims, a BIGOT and a Racist, simply because I see a show that is promoting anti-racism as not racist and you don't. You think it's racist simply because you refuse to wrap your head around the idea that a group of white people might actually NOT be racist! Seems you are the racist one.
neverflybound 7 months ago
@neverflybound Yes, I do think you are a bigot. I don't see why, out of nowhere, you said you weren't white. Your color is irrelevant. What matters is that you are supporting a racist show, and that makes you despicable.
I don't think they all are racist. Wendy Richards clearly isn't because she didn't participate.
Abena20 7 months ago
@Abena20 I must be racist against my own race then, eh? No -it is not automatically a racist show just because you're too stupid to know what is racism and what isn't.
neverflybound 7 months ago
@Abena20 You're incapable of responding intelligently to ANY of the points I have made. Probably because you have no grounds at all to refute them. Instead, you just keep playing the race card and it not only makes you despicable- It makes you a fool. You have yet to make any clear points on what is racist. You have yet to tell me WHAT, EXACTLY, was the message of the show (You have no clue what it is, obviously) You cannot explain how it's supposedly homophobic- You only spout accusations.
neverflybound 7 months ago
@Abena20 Tell me something, genius... Is Huck Finn Racist? Yes or no?
neverflybound 7 months ago
@Abena20 I checked out your channel. Seems you are doing a lot of trolling lately, judging by the comments others have left for you. If your feelings are hurt by watching this episode of AYBS, then here's an idea, DON'T WATCH IT. I'm sure that's the same advice you would give to others regarding the gay / alternative videos you have on your YouTube channel. Stop pointing the finger and preaching your "opinion" at people just because your feelings are hurt. It only makes you seem close-minded.
JacuzziBooty 6 months ago

@Abena20 i watched on a tv show once someone talking and he said you can call someone or a group something providing that u can prove it right and that its true....for instance u can call someone a B@st@rd providing that he is(its not right to do it but u can do it)......and in some instances what most people call racist is nothing more than saying the truth!
stephanosmixail 1 month ago
@Abena20 Right, so everything anyone can do or say might be banned if someone says it harms them. For example, when someone criticizes President Obama it's attacked as racism. By your logic, we should stop criticizing his policies because someone cried racism.
fjccommish 1 month ago
@fjccommish By that logic, we shouldn't have 911 operators because some people call them for stupid reasons.
Abena20 1 month ago
@Abena20 If, like with cries of racism, the majority of 911 calls were frivolous, then that would be true.
fjccommish 1 month ago
@fjccommish i once heard a looney left guy say that only white people can be racist which as a statement is total crap and the most stupid thing i have ever heard. in my view all people are equal but not all views are equal otherwise facism equals humanism and would just be stupid. the real evils of the world should be searched and stamped upon. why can't people just be rational and live according to facts instead of fairy tales. as a species we are on a crossroads i think. long live freedom.

Chill.

wow... where ever you go people's mouths are watering to do blackface, say the n or f word...and the sad thing is everyone just sits back and laughs like it's all in fun.. how wonderful it must be to be part of the group that dominates the world...you're trained to not care and not see racism...thank you to those who do care and refuse to be lulled into this white social ignorance.
brandesq 10 months ago
@brandesq Can you be anymore of an ass? Not everyone thinks like that. So don't say it's all white people who do. Their sure as hell are probably some racists in other nationalities. Besides if you can't take a damn joke why the hell are you here on a Are You Being Served? video?
demonicprincess09 10 months ago
@demonicprincess09 We came to AYBS for jokes yes, but not racist ones. It's easy to defend racism like you are when you are not the victim of it.
Abena20 9 months ago
@Abena20 And this is racist how? I don't see how it is. I honestly think people look into stuff WAY to seriously anymore and find racism so easily so they can bitch about it.
demonicprincess09 9 months ago
@demonicprincess09 You don't understand how blackface is racist? Are you ignorant or just stupid? In either case, I would recommend picking up a history book or doing a google search on blackface until you understand.
Abena20 9 months ago
@Abena20 Fuck off you stupid bitch. I get what Blackface is and honestly DON'T GIVE A FUCK! You're just some stupid fucking troll who really needs to go the fuck away. I've had it with your ass shut up I don't want to hear from you again. If you're so damn offended by this episode here's a piece of advice don't watch it. You want to get so butthurt over something that was done years ago and probably wasn't considered racist then fine but don't bitch to me about it. Go the fuck away already.
demonicprincess09 9 months ago

Learn to fucking read.
demonicprincess09 9 months ago
@Abena20 So... You always enjoyed the show, the camp jokes with Humphreys, the jewish jokes with Goldberg and so on... But when your race was made fun of- then you got offended and made all these comments? And you Speak Of Hypocrisy?
You thought it was funny when they made fun of everyone else. You clearly have no idea what "Comedy" is (and has always been) about.
neverflybound 7 months ago
@neverflybound I've never heard any Jewish jokes on this show. And I never saw Humphreys made fun of for being gay, but I haven't watched all of the episodes. Black face has never been comedy. It is pure hate.
Abena20 7 months ago
@Abena20 Claiming ignorance about how you've laughed at others being made fun of but were offended when you were does not excuse it.
Whether or not it can be called "hate" depends entirely on the Motives of the Performers. Do you Know their motives?
Now, I do agree that it was in poor taste. But I do not agree that it was motivated by racism or hate. In fact, it's the opposite.
The motive was to make FUN of racism. No one is defending racism. They are defending the point that you missed.
neverflybound 7 months ago
@neverflybound "Claiming" So you're saying I'm lying now? I didn't hear any Jewish jokes on this show, and that's it. There are plenty of ways to make fun of racism without resorting to racism yourself. In addition, this episode was not about combating racism. There was no reason to include black face at all.
Abena20 7 months ago
@Abena20 - You made a claim- that is called claiming. Now- you say you never heard Jewish jokes, but you missed all the times Goldberg added up figures while counting in Yiddish? And he's Jewish. They make fun of Slocoumbs weight, old people (Granger and Grace) being senile- So on and So on. They essentially bash stereotypes all the time. You are CLAIMING that you missed it. They were not performing blackface, they were Making Fun of Blackface performance. There's a clear difference. Get over it
neverflybound 7 months ago
@neverflybound Why should I get over it? Like I said, you people who defend racism are taking the side of the people at fault and blame the groups that are being attacked for not accepting their crap.
Secondly, you act as if everything that is offensive is equally offensive. Surely you can understand that somethings are more offensive than others.
Regarding Goldberg, I had to look him up to see who you were talking about. I didn't see most of his season.
Abena20 7 months ago

Using my magical powers of deductive reasoning, I would guess is that they didn't film the episode the same day that it aired, and that he probably died after they shot this, but before it was shown on television.
dammitpea 1 year ago
@dammitpea Can you do any other kind of magic?
Hallinilla9 1 year ago
@Hallinilla9 no it was filmed before his death, BUT, due to the time it takes to edit and release it to broadcast, it takes ruffly two to three months
it's just that that this special wasn't aired until three months after his death.
