  • is off to BeauSejour in Guernsey to sing this very song this evening - Veronique gives one of the best interpretations

  • Just found out that I have French-Canadian heritage and that my Grandmother used to always sing this song to lull my Aunts and Uncles to sleep. It's strange how I was practising this for my exam and one of my uncles just so happened to overhear, leading to my discovery. Just goes to show how music unites us all

  • I'm using this for college auditions. Her voice is beautiful!

  • Lovely rendition! I have just started learning this song (tenor version).

  • So far (?) the best rendition of this song ever! My mother's favourite song - remembered hearing this from age 3.

  • I can't find a version that I prefer to this one. (Not that I'm trying that hard, but still...)

  • @19Edurne You should listen to the Souzay performance here.

  • @19Edurne You should listen to the Souzay performance here.

  • @LayLink Une pop victime une!

  • @MisterYoupinet

you mean a pop saved ^^

  • We studied this in A- level music last year. Such as beautiful piece, a true pleasure and privilege to hear. Opened up a new world of music for me personally,

  • soft and sincere... with nice tempo... other interpretations are just interpretations to me...

  • Je l'aime.... simplement magnifique!

  • do you know what key she is singing in?

  • @musicloveBH C minor.

  • @volk410 I don't feel so bad about singing it in C minor if SHE does it!

  • @musicloveBH its in c minor

  • great vocals but i she is taking it a little too fast

  • Sublime!

  • @Zsuzsi22

So agree with everybody's comments. Found another short gem in Delius Prelude No1 for piano. Uploaded by GalinaHeifetz. Have to say as a lifelong Delius devote I cannot believe I have not heard this before. The last few bars remind me of Chopin, but are pure essence of Delius !

  • beautiful

  • she just floats ....wonderfully

  • @katieboyd1

Thats it, it does. How exquisite a voice and with such music. How nice to find something, by chance, that you know from the first few bars you are going to adore !

  • @BunkyOhare

That's exactly how I felt the first time I heard this song, Faure = genius

  • Superb, only recently discovered this gem and fell in love with it within 15 seconds.

I go back time and again. Thanks for posting it.

  • I've performed this song for years but damn, just listening to this there's so much I could learn.

  • faure un maestro un el proteccionismo francés

  • Sublimissimissime...

  • Magnífica

  • oh bella voz,

    Je rêvais le bonheur, ardent message;

    Tu rayonnais comme un ciel éclairé par l'aurore;

    Pour m'enfuir avec toi vers la lumière;

    Les cieux pour nous entr'ouvraient leurs nues;

    Splendeurs inconnues, lueurs divines entrevues...

    À suivre...

  • Totally random...but i think I'm in love with this picture. She looks so....effortlessly beautiful. Ethereal almost. At least to me...and the voice only adds to it.

  • Thank you so much for this stunning recording. This singer truly embodies the emotion of the piece and does not distract with disconnected line or over emphasized syllables. Positively velvet. I am delighted to have heard this. Brava, Veronique!

  • wow! i rarely enjoy classical sopranos - but this one just blew me away. so direct and true and undeniably heartfelt in every syllable

and i love faure. his requiem is one of my favorite pieces

Merveilleuse.

  • This is an amazing singer, and the very first chanson piece that I sang in college. :0)

  • Studying this at AS-Music, love it, can't wait to study music in university :D

Thumbs up if you Love music!

  • @ktmad sorry i accidently did the wrong one and cant undo it ;_ ;

  • @ktmad loooll im studying it too! love this one, doing work on it now ;)

  • @ktmad That's exactly what I did. I'm second year now :)

  • She's singing the mezzosoprano version.

  • you are right. Faure, however, wrote that key as the original.

  • the mezzo one? interesting :)

I'm learning this version :) Such a beautiful song.

  • I totally agree...I am learning the b minor version

  • this is not the low key

  • Tight tempo as far as i'm concerned French art song teacher Roy Royal wanted it done this way

  • Beautiful voice! As for the tempo argument, I've sung this song hundreds of times, and my teacher insisted that I sang it at an EXCRUCIATINGLY SLOO-OOO-W pace, per tradition, in which case I was dizzy by the end of the song, LOL, esp the last "mysterieuse". Killer. If I knew it was fine to sing at this tempo, believe me, I would have! Brava! Off to listen to Kanawa's version.

  • oh gawd - ha ha ! You have my sympathies :D They forget we have to breathe out then in again.

  • Très belle

  • My favorite version, of my favorite song...

  • I wish I could watch a live video of her singing. so beautiful!

  • beautiful voice coming from a beautiful women.

  • hermoso!

  • I've personally performed this song before and the tempo has to be this quick in order for the performer to be able to take breaths. The flow and "arch" of the song would be compromised if she had to take breaths every two measures. I had to speed up the tempo as well. It's the only way you can make it through the song. Phrasing is key.

  • aha.

  • very true. i'm working on this piece in my voice lessons and if the tempo drags even a little, it becomes difficult to complete the phrases.

  • I love it at this tempo, but i especially love her clarity.

  • her voice is crystal clear! and the quicker tempo is a bit of a surprise, but I find it refreshing

  • SLOW DOWN.... its an absolutely beautiful song when done at the correct tempo. rene flemming sings it beautifully, probably the best ive heard

  • that said, tone quality is quite beautiful

  • you are an idiot stupid ignoramus. This is the perfect tempo

  • it feels rushed. i like the song slower than she preformed it. and you are extremely ignorant if you automatically dismiss someone elses preferences. to me the song is too fast, she cant put in things that she could have put in if she took it slower. anyway, the song is SUPPOSED to be slower than what she took it. if you dont think so, argue with the composer. Personally, i think Rene Flemming sings it much better

  • this is th eonly true tempo. I can't explain it to you because you are wedded to tradition. The only tempo marking is Andantino and this performance is very true to the tempo, very true indeed. Sorry about your ignorance

  • cant explain it to me because im wedded to tradition? thats a poor excuse, especially when you figure in im a jazzer. You do realize Andantino is range of tempos, and not a set tempo, right? and if that is the only correct tempo, why do people such as rene flemming, pablo casals, and lynn hanall take the thing much slower? maybe because they realize that any idiot can preform the song speedily, but this song cries out to be played slower, so you can make the thing drip with emotion.

  • I agree that it could definitely be a bit slower, and I agree that people can disagree about it! Either way, I LOVE her voice, if you haven't yet, listen to her singing Au bord de l'eau! Ahhhhhh-mazing.

  • J'adore cette chanson!. Marcel Dupratil, lyceen marseillais

  • Très jolie, et excellente diction!

  • Perfect.

  • absolutely agree

  • best version on youtube! particularly like the tone on sommeil!

  • EXQUISITE! Beautiful, unaffected timbre and diction! Interpreted with a sweet melancholy that avoids self indulgence or excessive sentimentality.

Do listen to the recording that Barbara Hendricks made for EMI. It's equally lovely in its own way.

  • @legatofancier what a comment haha

  • Her voice is beautifully clear.

  • In a slumber charmed by your image I dreamed of happiness, ardent mirage; Your eyes were more tender, your voice pure and clear. You were radiant like a sky brightened by sunrise; You were calling me, and I left the earth To flee with you towards the light; The skies opened their clouds for us, Splendors unknown, glimpses of divine light... Alas! Alas, sad awakening from dreams! I call to you, oh night, give me back your illusions; Return, return with your radiance, Return, oh mysterious night!
  • i honestly don't know what this song meant. But i can hear the beauty of it. What does it meant anyway??? can someone tell me? im Malaysian anyway so i don't understand the kind of language.

  • After a dream..

  • it seems to me that the song is about someone who can only have someone else in their dreams. It talks about how the dreamt about person was so much better in the dream than in real life.

At least, that's what I think.

  • oh, thats seemed true, but a pity... coz it means that she will always be alone... :-(

  • I have a really beautiful, sweet version of this song, but I don't know who sings it...

  • The best version I've found on here by far!

  • This is perhaps the only version of this song that I have found on YouTube that doesn't sound like it's trying to knock down the Berlin Wall. I am singing this piece for my college auditions, and I hope I do not massacre its richness like so many people tend to.

  • gorgeous...

  • Beautiful - and the pianist sounds very good too.

  • no way ! ny voice class is doing this now :) woot woot !

    Adorable!

  • you have earned yourself a subscription

(well... your fine selection of favourites helped :) )

  • Sadly enough, her interpretation of this song was the least aggressive version I could find on youtube. This is an extremely melancholic song and it feels terrible when the singer is using all she/he has in her/his lungs to bring us the message of .. the subtle sadness. Oh my.

It should be sung *gently*, I think. Just a humble opinion.

  • I totally agree. It's a very soft and quiet sad song. If they stopped singing in a church and tried it in a dark lounge or something similar I think they would get the right feel. Barbara Streisand actually did a nice cover, mostly because she's not trying to sing to the mountains.

  • A good voice, and mercifully she doesn't gargle her Rs like a night club singer, the way many (bad) modern French singers do.

The performance is all out, though, in one dynamic level, and the pianist is very heavy-handed. Well vocalised, no magic.

  • MAGNIFIQUE!!!

  • this is a total gem of a performance.

Roger Vignoles piano part also plays a big part in making it so outstanding.

  • I am a classical vocal performance major & although, Kiri Te Kanawa has the technique for this song down to an art, I really feel the emotion of this song (& possibly Faure's intention) through Veronique's version. It's lovely & puts me into a swaying sort of trance :)

  • i sang this song to get into my university (it worked lol) and this is a beautiful singer singing a beautiful song, how could one go wrong!

  • She has a beautiful tone,

  • Very nice, but so hard to sing !

  • This song is so magical in her interpretation!!! Bravo!

  • the first

    morning light

    singing herself

  • an awesome rendition of this song.

  • This is TRUE French voice. I love it. Ceci est la façon!

  • There is an intimate quality to her sound that is very touching... she also sounds very natural, more like a woman than an opera singer... it gives the song a wonderful feeling.. bravo!

  • Extremely true! It sounds so natural, and not 'fake'! :) I am so inspired. Thank you for commenting this way!!

  • Most beautiful lied ever with perfect french languege and all, all
