I don't know what made me think of it, but some old movie with mechanical spiders just popped into my head a few days ago. This movie creeped me the hell out as a 4-year old! I totally remember Tom Sellac's burned face, but I didn't have a clue about Gene Simmons' budding acting career. This is easily 25 years into memory....Youtube is awesome!
You'd think Luther would have built some kind of fail-safe into the "spiders" to keep them from attacking him. Then again, hoisting a villain with his own petard is always a classic.
@SamBuddwing Yep, highly intelligent but no common sense. And these things were way more dangerous than real spiders. Luther got a dose of his own medicine....Literally!
@fabulmanxxx Same here (earned my MSEE from Purdue)....but I'm curious just who was the "common-sense" engineer who decided the reset button should be installed at the freakin' bottom of the elevator???
@fabulmanxxx Ha ha...prof's like those are true Ph.D's: PILED HIGH -N- DEEPER in theoretical pish-pash! Dr. Luther would eat them all for breakfast :)
Holy shit, this scene brings back memories. my dad rented this from one of those mom and pop VHS stores when it came out back in either 84' and 85'....jesus, this elevator scene actually gave me nightmares! damn 25 years since i seen this...i think i should rent it.
Next to Westworld, Runaway is another big Michael Crichton classic thriller to me. Very chilling to see Luther (Gene Simmons) killed off by his own menacing spider creations! Highly recommended film.
@Dagga07 hahahahaha... I mean, yeah, I can see it... but... that can only be a coincidence, this movie was made in 84 and batman wasn't made until 88-89!
My legs feel weak from watching this scene. I absolutely hate heights and I get anxious from watching this clip, but it is great!!! Those spiders shooting that acid on his face must have hurt like a MF. Classic!!!

Just a trivia tip-off. The woman, Cynthia Rhodes, is Richard Marx's wife and has been since 1988 or so.
