Well, it is not as simple as that. At the time of Da Vinci the church was really powerful: they were practically the government and they were even able to kill people for what they consider a disrespect. What he did with this painting was bold and risky: he may well have lost his life for what he did. So "forgetting" is not really an option here, what he is doing is a statement, he is speaking his mind through his art.

@gh0stToby are you serious? In the first version of madonna of the rocks, baby jesus doesn't have a halo too. He has done that purposely. After church realized that the painting has some symbols in it that are against religion, they wanted to draw him another version of the same painting. The first one is in the louvre and the second one is in the national gallery in london. And in the second one baby jesus has a halo.

@gh0stToby Da Vinci was one of the best painters he didn't use to forget things ...he had a different mindset and he wasn't a Christian,He believed in the worship of female deities and for this reason many of his paintings showing men look like women or vice versa,this is because he wanted to balance the 2 genders.Also it is said that the name of Da Vinci's Mona Lisa is from the names of Egyptian gods Ammon (Amon=Mona)and Isis (L'isa)who were the gods of male and a female fertility,respectively!
