This older version sounds almost upbeat compared to the 2011 Director's Cut which is devastating in its sadness. I wonder if Kate's age has anything to do with it - when you're young and your heart is broken, there's still love out there somewhere for you. But in the Director's Cut version you get the feeling that she's looking back over her whole life, and "never" really means never again. In any case I love Kate and both versions (although the 2011 is one of my favorites of all her songs.)
I think this beautiful song could be about being in love with someone you cannot be with. Its that desire for something you can never have now. Perhaps they were together and she/he is holding onto what might be. Its extremely sad - its that dreadful pain you experiance when you have to move on but just can't. That sorrow you experiance, 'little death'. Its such a deep song - should be hailed as a true gem. One of Kate's most beautiful songs. Tragically beautiful.
My brother bought her first single and everything from there on. And his little sister, who was seven years younger, fell in love with Wuthering Heights and claimed Kate Bush for her own for evermore xxxxxxxxxxxxx
ctd...Field burning is used to clear land of existing crop residue and to kill weeds and weed seeds in preparation for the next crop. This 'destruction' is part of the creative process. So the scene poignantly emphasises her barrenness.
Her frustration, longing, love and anger make her feel that he is happy without her... A sad but beautiful song...
I think this song deals with the pain of a woman's infertility, about her being unable to conceive the "life that might have been"; and this is very difficult for her and the relationship to handle... The "thrill and the hurting" of giving birth will never be hers... It can never be... And this reality clashes with the dream, making the relationship too difficult for either of them.
This song became so relevant to me when I was in the throes of a love affair that couldn't last... wouldn't sustain. The song said it all... I haven't heard it in a very long time and now that long buried emotion has surfaced. Not in a bad way either... a part of life, long past and whose memory is now reveled in
Thankyou for sharing this. I think Kate Bush always inspires people on a deep level and this song is no exception. Its just so tragic and something that happens to us. A little tragedy being acted out. Very sad but also achingly beautiful. X

I did not like the song at the beginning, but the chorus is as catchy as usual. And the song is beautiful.
I appreciate Kate's every song.Even the demos are wonderful! More Kate for us to LOVE and ADORE.
