yeah the turntablist does not mesh well with the rest of them unfortunately.. i could see it meshing well if he were on time and didn't spend so 3+ minutes scratching. it just seems a bit much, especially since he's not doing anything different.
I can't believe DJ Disk is actually playing with these guys! I had only seen him before playing with Primus and I thought he totally sucked! I guess this is his true element because he works magic with this group!

This music is talking to each other in its own language.:-) Simply amazing. What a treat. I find this genre of music the most soul reaching of any that I have learned about. so far. My earphones allow the movement of sound, to be heard. Truly UPLIFTING that your soul does not want to come back to you. : -) My new name for this piece "Music in full concersation." You can hear the one answer the others question.:) Never felt this before. : -) Thanks for posting this vid. Namaste! Peace and Love!
this band very easily blows my mind, upon listening to this transportative music i am whisked off to other realms and antipodes of the mind. and wasnt the turntables with Praxis? peace
I went to this show and Stern Grove and both were completely mindblowing! Got to admit I'm not a fan of turntablism. It seems out of place as did the Midival Punditz. Too repetetive and sonically separated from the tones of the rest of the muscians. Gigi is a real presence. When she approached the mic the whole crowd kind of shivered in a barely concealed erotic manner. Zakir of course never fails to amaze and delight. I really wish this ensemble would do more.
The scratcher ruins it for me.Even if the guy is the best, I just don't like the sound. Can't even hear the bass on this.
I just listened to Live at Stern Grove (1st 6 tracks) on my home stereo, and Lasswell's bass thunders, just carrying the whole performance. I really like tracks where Gigi is singing. That is the sound of a super-group. Lose the scratcher, hire the Gigi! :-)
are ya'll fukn out f ur mind??? dj disk is not playing off time.... tts the way its supposed to be in this kinda experimental act.... check him out with herbie hancock(essence concert)
Your opinion is respected but disagreed with. I wish they would've mixed it better though. If they would have upped the tabla and brought the tables back a bit, I think it would have been perfect.
The scratcher was okay. Not really a problem. The trap player just held time on the high-hat to keep everybody else together so they wouldn't get lost. But like so many melodic instrument players from the West, this scratcher had a poor to average time sense. He wasn't sub-dividing the time properly and slid out a few times. He is playing with the most highly regarded tabla player in the entire world!
I apreciated the post and I believe that the skratcher, although they are mic'd wrong, knows the language well and is fairly fluid, yet it was a little unexpected all in all I love it though, thanx
He may not be exactly equal talent, but what he's doing is purposefully syncopating and using tuplet type rhythms in a cross-rhythm more African style as compared to the additive style of the Indian rhythms. He's not "out of time" aside from intentionally, for the most part.
I was there. Fully blew me away. Here I thought I would be able to see what Zakir was doing with his technique. It was just a blur of fingers. Amazing.
Indian music get me higher than any other. dank.

@madchops 82: Absolutely. The DJ is rather weak compared to all other people involved - his name is DJ DISK, not Karsh Kale

@madchops82 Ya, he is obviously very talented, but his style is clashing with the rest of the music.
