I had the opportunity to smell a vintage version of this one a week ago and was striked by how the "old school opening" wasn't there, almost no citrus at all. Much more almondy and almost bitter. Interesting, if Guerlain chose to reformulate this into a scent that smells more mature than the original...
It doesn't strike me as an old man smell either like some of the creed products (rose bulgar anyone?). I think oldspice is that scent for me mixed with bengay. That smells of old man. Vetiver is refreshing and understated. It's the kind of scent that doesn't scream out for attention but once somebody gets close to you they will be glad they did. It's understated elegance neatly bottled for our olfactory arousal.
I don't agree with the opinion he has about the opening. I remember clearly my first spray and initial impression years ago, and as well as how I perceive it now that I'm used to it. My initial impression was a little sweet, a undernote of citrus and a touch of clove and black liquorice. The clove is my favorite part of the opening. I agree with his view of the drydown though which is also my favorite part. The age of the product doesn't matter, Green irish tweed is even older....
Haha, love this review. Though for me this is possibly the best fragrance ever and I have never thought of it as dated! :) can't you do a special with old men perfumes? Habit Rouge, Pour Monsieur, Eau Sauvage, Brut, Caron Pour Un Homme, etc. Would be super fun!
@Kerosenetrewthe Oh my bad atelier has very similar packaging...i had a sample of voyage it was ok personally i think terre d' hermes is the better choice
My being a fan of vetiver I think this one is just ok. Nothing I would actually buy and wear again. I agree with rhaybans. If I was looking for a fresh vetiver I would go with Grey Vetiver for sure.
It's one of my top three frags. Love it. Funny thing about Guerlain's Vetiver is that the 2000 reformulated version smells more dated than the older one, which is more tobacco-like and less lemony. Definitely try it if you have a chance.
Awesome Review! It is a funny looking bottle! I like this fragrance the opening is pretty old school but like you said nice once it drys. This stuff also lasts a long time on me and projects very well. Have you tried the Vintage Guerlain Vetiver Kerosene? Its a little different to my nose, it smells dirtier and not as bright as this one to me. Thanks for this vid awesome job!
Good old Guerlain Vetiver. You can still go to Sephora's and try this one out. I also enjoy the polar opposite written reviews out there on this one. Some say this is a classic and true masterpiece while others say it smells like urine or bugspray. You compared it to Sycomore & Encre Noire. I would say the closest modern vetiver that I have smelled so far to this one is Grey Vetiver by Tom Ford. So if someone can't get over a few notes in Guerlain's Vetiver, Tom Ford's might be a good alt.
Great review. I love classics, but the great problem is in my country the stores dont give any samples and i can not smell or have it. Unfortunelly, because i love perfums.

Guys give Tom Ford's Grey Vetiver a try for a "younger" take on the vetiver thing.

Took me a while to warm up to this one too. But now I recognize its greatness. Almost swapped it, but I'm glad I didn't now.
