He was in the very first German film I ever saw and his performance inspired me to go out and watch a bunch of other German films. Germany should be very proud to have had such a talented and gracious actor to represent them. Rest in peace Ulrich. Thank you for your brilliance.
I am shocked and immensely saddened to learn just today, on IMDB whilst looking for some of Ulrich Mühe's other films, that he died back in 2007 :( The Lives Of Others is my favourite foreign film - Ulrich Mühe's performance was outstanding and I've subsequently watched it several times since its release. He was such a talented actor - I'm glad he deservedly collected the Oscar on stage in 2007, as the film would surely not have won without his performance. RIP
ADDIO ULRICH... con te se ne parte un tenereissimo, bravissimo, affascinante attore, uomo, amato e ..... che tristezza provo al guardare i tuoi occhi belli e tu ...
I also watched The Lives of Others and there was only one person I could think of when I saw this guy. Kevin Spacey. They look exactly the same, someone that agrees with me?
another one is "John Rabe" about a german (same name) who worked for Siemens in china, where he saved 250.000 lifes during the massacre of Nanking (Nanjing) in WW2.
What an actor! I just watched The Lives of Others about an hour ago and I am still thinking about it . One of the best films I have seen in years. Very sad that this man died , he really was a magnificent actor . Can anybody let me know of other German films or other European films that are excellent? This film has inspired a new interest for me and I won't be wasting time on any Hollywood crap!
An amazing actor agreed, his Daughter Anna Maria is a very good young actress too. Such a wise head on young shoulder's. Sad to think that both her parents passed away while she is so young. Definitely an actress to keep an eye out for.
you may want to watch "der Untergang" (the downfall), "Der Baader Meinhof Komplex", "Lola rennt", "das Boot"(a true classic), good bye Lenin...there are quite a few very good movies out there.
I can rocommend "The Baader Meinhof Complex". The movies plays in the 1970/80 when Germany was threathens by the terrorists of the Rote Armee Fraktion (Red Armee Fraction = RAF).
Trailer international search for "The Baader Meinhof Complex h480" at youtube
Its also with Martina Gedeck (= Christa-Maria Sieland) from The Lives of Others, was also nominated for an Oscar (2009).
@Dotsonascreen6 I agree!! grat great actor. Sometime i think that my sorrow is more thena the one for a relative!! I think that I love this magnific actor as REAL friend of mine! His las fils was MEIN FUHER... and HE IS JUST GREAT GREA T!! for sur e you will love also his FUNNY GAMES.. if you are strong, watch this movie...it can give you some trouble!
"Life is beautiful", "Pan's Labyrinth", "Das Experiment", "The Downfall", "La vie en rose"...those are very good European movies. you can watch the trailers on youtube
@Dotsonascreen6 We have to study The Lives of Other for German, and the whole topic revolves around Wiesler: I'm so glad! He's an incredible character played by an incredible actor.
I can recommend Cyrano de Bergerac as an excellent foreign language film. It is in French, which I cannot understand a word of and I saw it without the subtitles but it's still a fab film, as is Amelie.
Ulrich Muhe, Angela Winkler, Wolfgang Preiss, Bruno Ganz, ALL the actors in "Untergang" (Unbelievable movie), M Schell, Lili Palmer, Romy Schneider. GREAT actors.
I had never heard of Ulrich, till the 'Lives of Others'..By reading these comments i found out that he passed away.. God bless his soul.. I believe he is in peace now, as all great spirits are..
You should be careful with such statements. There was a big fight because of Mühes statement and according to the court Jenny Gröllmann was right. I dont wanna chose a site, I just think it's very very sad that it ended that way, no matter who was right and who was wrong.
I never heard of Ulrich until i watched the Lives of others. I though he did a moving performance in the film so i looked him up and found out that he had passed away and this upset me quite a bit. He was a great actor.
I didnt know Ulrich before watching Lives of others. I went to wikipedia/imdb to find out his ohter movies. My heart was broken when I found out that he's no longer with us. Ulrich u'll be missed by millions! May his soul rest in peace.
my exact sentiments... I just watched Das Lieben and I was extremely moved by the movie and Ulrich's performance, I too just read up on his recent loss in battling stomach cancer. I am saddened I won't be seeing anymore from him but I will celebrate his life by delving into his legacy of work.
Beautifuly done. I just recently seen The Lives of Others(sorry if i got the title wrong) and it was amazing. Ulrich Muhe was an amazing actor. Gone but not forgotten.
I know when he was born an when he died. I just meant, that his post concludes, that he was very young. By so called modern standards the fifties are the middle of ones life so that's not really young though...
And there are good people who die at an age of over hundred years. The point is that "timelad" wanted to use a quote in a creative way and poorly failed. I was laughing at him so don't make this a dispute...
its so sad that he is no longer with us however i am so delighted that he has been nominated for a bafta for the lives of others even though he is no longer here to see it. i think that that is really special and a lovely way to mark his passing...
i´ve just learnt today, that he´s died month ago and i´m shocked, i didn´t know, he was ill, i miss him.. it´s great loss that he hadn´t got more time, especially after Live of others..
Yeah, just "discovered" in the US through "Lives of Others", great actor, great character Capt. Gerd Weisler. I'll never forget him. Thanks Ulrich Muhe, bless you.

In the real life, he was spied by the stasi and his wife was a confident.
He said: For performing good my role in "Lives of the others" I just had to remember old times.
The reality is rather worst than the fiction.
