@szametha was just for drive direction, in the beginning NSU have some problems with that wheel, but later model was better design, really kettenkrad was a incredible machine
hahha it dont need front wheel, its there just cuz controling of direction...the germans in ww2 had really interesting tech, compare kattenkrad to american jeep or britain bren carrier in that time, great difference :D
What did you use as the main bike component? Did you self-manufacture all the other bits or did you source them? Would love to own and drive one of these but it will have to remain just a dream...unless I win the lottery...
Looks like somewhere near me - where did you film that?
Some Gear Head out there needs to Commercialize the KettenKrad, cause I would definitely get one, not only because its cool to look at and ride in...it'll cut my Gas Expenses in half and I dont have to worry too much about Parking.
As for anyone askin for a Ride...Ass, Gas or Grass, aint no one riding for free!
I want to build one of these, I never thought to look on youtube, I thought I was an original copier.
I have two honda cb650 motorcycles, and a rotax 299cc two stroke snowmobile air cooled engine, with a centrifugal clutch. I have a bunch of other motors too.
A real live Opel Kettenrad :) Nice to see one of theese actually movin :) Does its engine really exactly the same as the 1930' Opel Olympia used? Than I guess its not that hard to find part for its repairs.. OPEL 4 LIFE!
Im thinking a variation of this thing might be useful in afghanistan ? maybe a " hybrid" of some kind ? Utilizing a realtively lightweight diesel generator as the powerplant and having the generator function secondarily in the base camp to provide electricity ?
free steering before the track braking takes effect is really none at slow speed, to turn from starting you need to kinda jerk it around, once moving at slow speed, the front wheel has very limited effect,it seems to have more effect at faster speeds.
re videos of a krad in deep mud, i have seen one somewhere, i guess on here but cannot remember exactly
A chap name of andreas melhorn was driving through deep mud if i remember correctly.
the front wheel really has no effect on the steering, it is there to help the vehicle when it goes up a rise.
if the wheel was not there it would kinda porpoise and be more unstable than it already is. It is top heavy, the centre of gravity is high so slopes can cause a problem particularly side on
Kradbuilder, very nice work, looks in excellent condition. I have a question, regarding steering: How much directional control do you have, using the "free-movement" (before skid-steering)? Also I haven't seen any vids of any Kettenkrad in deep mud or difficult off-road terrain, have you?
Hi
it cost me £10,000 but it was in a very poor condition - i had to spend thousands of pounds restoring it
check out vw166.com website as there are always some for sale on there

I see one of these would be very expensive for being vintage from the war but
any chance there are any of these made recently with a cheaper price?
I would save money all my life to buy one not because of the relic and yes because of the machine.

WilliamBrown93 8 months ago
it was made by NSU - it has a 4 cylinder opel car engine
it was used as a light tractor to pull a small trailer with ammo or supplies or a small anti-tank gun
originally used by german paratroops then everyone wanted one

wow....great .I like this vehicle !!!
where is the origin of this producer?
I never see in Thailand ...and in this region too.
what is the main purpose of this machine ?
boonthip100 9 months ago
@boonthip100 Built for the German Army in WW2 so there are not many around.
I would like to know its purpose too because it seems a lot of machine for very little carrying capacity.

Why did they bother having the front wheel?..it seems kind of useless. it would be better to just diff steer the vech.

@BobbyIronsights
hi, i suggest you get hold of a manual, ostfront sell these. Also try to get to a few military shows or a museum that has a kettenkrad.
i would say this is not an easy project but you really need to see one up close to get an idea of the vehicle first.
i will help where i can.

kradbulider 3 years ago
So it's road legal like a motorcycle?
peepeevagi 3 years ago
they can be made road legal. Rubber track blocks don't tear up the road but they wear out and are expensive to replace.
80 blocks at £20 each is a bit much
would need to fit indicators and brake lights as well
also that blackout light is rubbish.
not going to make it road legal

How much did it cost to make? Fabulous work!
tedfellows 3 years ago
it stands me at about £25,000 at the moment.
they sell for anywhere between £67,000 and £150,000
kradbulider 3 years ago
Ah not too much to make then, are they easy?
tedfellows 3 years ago
not really difficult. not much room between engine and hull sides.
not easy to get to differential with engine and gearbox in.
everything is just nuts and bolts really
my drive train is out at the moment, need to change the seals on the differential so the oil doesn't leak into the steering brakes.
once seals changed it takes about 2 hours to get it back together and running about again.
kradbulider 3 years ago
So to make a "Modernized" kettenkrad is totally possible?
peepeevagi 3 years ago
yep
it is called a quad bike
