  • Hi

it cost me £10,000 but it was in a very poor condition - i had to spend thousands of pounds restoring it

check out vw166.com website as there are always some for sale on there

    philip

  • How much did It cost you? I've been looking to find one for about a year now.

  • для чего там колесо передние ?

  • saving private ryan!

  • so this is what ancestor of King Tigers looks like...

  • nice nice

  • FUCKING HATE THESE THINGS IN COH

  • go secure the fuel point noob !!

  • @karkafon Kettenkraftrad moving on enemy fuel depot.

  • I WOULD LIKE TO BLITZKRIEG OVER SOME COMMIES WITH THAT

  • WOW NEVER SEEN THAT HARLEY BEFORE.

  • At speed? What speed? Walking speed?!

  • Awesome! Even faster than Moto Guzzi Mulo Meccanico!

  • God, I always wanted such a thing and a WWII Kübel :)

I wonder how much does it cost? Anyone knows?

Are these originals or are they newly built?

Maybe someone knows. Thanks a lot!

  • This vehicle was in fim sagving private ryan ?

  • @11SNA Yes, they used it to lure the Tiger to their ambush position.

  • I see one of these would be very expensive for being vintage from the war but

any chance there are any of these made recently with a cheaper price?

I would save money all my life to buy one not because of the relic and yes because of the machine.

  • I never understood what the use of the rather puny frontwheel was.

  • @szametha was just for drive direction, in the beginning NSU have some problems with that wheel, but later model was better design, really kettenkrad was a incredible machine

  • Do want.

  • It's a Halftrack Motorcycle... If I don't get one by my 21st birthday, I will die of dissapointment.

  • it was made by NSU - it has a 4 cylinder opel car engine

it was used as a light tractor to pull a small trailer with ammo or supplies or a small anti-tank gun

originally used by german paratroops then everyone wanted one

    philip

  • wow....great .I like this vehicle !!!

where is the origin of this producer?

I never see in Thailand ...and in this region too.

what is the main purpose of this machine ?

  • @boonthip100 Built for the German Army in WW2 so there are not many around.

I would like to know its purpose too because it seems a lot of machine for very little carrying capacity.

  • Why did they bother having the front wheel?..it seems kind of useless. it would be better to just diff steer the vech.

  • hahha it dont need front wheel, its there just cuz controling of direction...the germans in ww2 had really interesting tech, compare kattenkrad to american jeep or britain bren carrier in that time, great difference :D

  • there is sound on the video - there is sound on all of them

  • Some sound would have been nice.

  • tohle chci mit doma

  • what was this used for?

  • @conartiz1987

it was used as a small tow tractor - anti tank gun or trailer

  • @conartiz1987 they used it for the transport of the soldiers,3-4 soldiers can be placed on kattenkrad XD just like british bren carrier

  • dear mum & dad,

You know you love me very much......

  • i want one SO BAD!

  • please check out the other videos as well

  • 80 k per hour or about 50mph

  • What's the max speed on a Kettenkrad?

  • fantastic

  • Hey look, a Tiger tank.

And what's this? HOLY SHIT RUN AWAY ITS A KETTENKRAD!!!

  • those things are so cool. I wish I had one. checkout unicyclehoopster on youtube

  • What did you use as the main bike component? Did you self-manufacture all the other bits or did you source them? Would love to own and drive one of these but it will have to remain just a dream...unless I win the lottery...

Looks like somewhere near me - where did you film that?

  • Can I go backwards with this one ?

  • why dont you take it to a strictly motorcycle only gathering

  • Some Gear Head out there needs to Commercialize the KettenKrad, cause I would definitely get one, not only because its cool to look at and ride in...it'll cut my Gas Expenses in half and I dont have to worry too much about Parking.

As for anyone askin for a Ride...Ass, Gas or Grass, aint no one riding for free!

  • @EvilFingers or snow issues!

  • @sailbeyondthesunset

From what Ive seen of the Kettenkrad in WWII Doc Videos, it doesnt do well in Deep Snow, because of the width of the Treads.

  • thats cool

  • cool stuff eh

    glad you like it

  • ONG thats Friggin AWSOME!

  • very funny or ?

  • I want to build one of these, I never thought to look on youtube, I thought I was an original copier.

I have two honda cb650 motorcycles, and a rotax 299cc two stroke snowmobile air cooled engine, with a centrifugal clutch. I have a bunch of other motors too.

    Any advice?

  • @BobbyIronsights

hi, i suggest you get hold of a manual, ostfront sell these. Also try to get to a few military shows or a museum that has a kettenkrad.

i would say this is not an easy project but you really need to see one up close to get an idea of the vehicle first.

i will help where i can.

    philip

  • a wonder of engineering,beautiful machine.

  • i mis understud the description a thougth i read at speed let me cheek one more time yup that was it says at speed !!!

  • @macheteboy787

i think you should look up the definition of speed

  • I'm tired of these bastards breaking through my MG emplacements and capturing my points :(

  • Beautiful restoration, well done and thanks for sharing this.

  • how do you get your hands on something like that?

  • these asshole bikes always run over my fucking barbed wire

  • Wonder how tight it can turn?

  • 4 metres radius

  • NoSleepTilDetox, on a dime, it will stop one track if you turn the handle tight enough.

  • @NoSleepTilDetox since tis a tanklike principle - I bet on a dime

  • Thats On Saving Pvt Ryan

  • yes, you are right

  • It would be cool to have one of those to run round the farm on LOL. Sounds very quite considing its a track vehicle.

*Is the front tyre solid rubber?

  • yes it is fairly quiet

front wheel is solid but it has a normal motorbike tyre with inner tube.

    cheers

  • That runs beuatifully now,it was running like a bag of nails in the previous vid,its so quiet you can hardly hear the engine!! Well done!!

  • How much did this cost you? Are these rare and hard to get? I would love to have some kind of German ww2 half track vehicle.

  • @XanaduZune The only one I have seen for sale was for sale at $70,000

  • 40 mph? Cool...

  • Are these diesel??

  • this has a petrol engine

  • Um...is that its top speed?

  • no this could go around 40 mph on road and 25 off road. this is like 10 mph

  • @Del360T the kettenkrad can go with 70 kph :P

  • I want one! :(

  • I vould like to go to work in one of these

  • Damn, that thing looks fun!!!

  • A real live Opel Kettenrad :) Nice to see one of theese actually movin :) Does its engine really exactly the same as the 1930' Opel Olympia used? Than I guess its not that hard to find part for its repairs.. OPEL 4 LIFE!

  • Im thinking a variation of this thing might be useful in afghanistan ? maybe a " hybrid" of some kind ? Utilizing a realtively lightweight diesel generator as the powerplant and having the generator function secondarily in the base camp to provide electricity ?

  • @srofficial06 good idea , a tracked "mule" + generator...cool !

  • tractor hehe

  • It has good suspension! XD

  • the suspension is fantastic. torsion bars as used on most german vehicles

  • FANTASTIC!

  • thanks

  • Now, how fast can it go?

  • It can do about 50miles per hour

  • So it's road legal like a motorcycle?

  • they can be made road legal. Rubber track blocks don't tear up the road but they wear out and are expensive to replace.

80 blocks at £20 each is a bit much

would need to fit indicators and brake lights as well

also that blackout light is rubbish.

not going to make it road legal

    philip

  • Hi Ray

free steering before the track braking takes effect is really none at slow speed, to turn from starting you need to kinda jerk it around, once moving at slow speed, the front wheel has very limited effect,it seems to have more effect at faster speeds.

re videos of a krad in deep mud, i have seen one somewhere, i guess on here but cannot remember exactly

A chap name of andreas melhorn was driving through deep mud if i remember correctly.

    regards

    philip

  • How much did it cost to make? Fabulous work!

  • it stands me at about £25,000 at the moment.

they sell for anywhere between £67,000 and £150,000

  • Ah not too much to make then, are they easy?

  • not really difficult. not much room between engine and hull sides.

not easy to get to differential with engine and gearbox in.

everything is just nuts and bolts really

my drive train is out at the moment, need to change the seals on the differential so the oil doesn't leak into the steering brakes.

once seals changed it takes about 2 hours to get it back together and running about again.

  • So to make a "Modernized" kettenkrad is totally possible?

  • yep

it is called a quad bike

  • i saw the vid of a krad rolling through the mud and wondered if the front wheel would steer better if in deep mud kinda like a rudder

  • Hi

the front wheel really has no effect on the steering, it is there to help the vehicle when it goes up a rise.

if the wheel was not there it would kinda porpoise and be more unstable than it already is. It is top heavy, the centre of gravity is high so slopes can cause a problem particularly side on

    glad you like the vid

  • Kradbuilder, very nice work, looks in excellent condition. I have a question, regarding steering: How much directional control do you have, using the "free-movement" (before skid-steering)? Also I haven't seen any vids of any Kettenkrad in deep mud or difficult off-road terrain, have you?

    Thanks,

    Ray
