  • I've never seen any artist evolve as much and as drastically as Trent. He has some of the best music of every decade since the 80's. I love this guy, I don't know how he thinks of this stuff though, as someone who's been making music for almost a year I can really see, or hear rather, why it takes years for him to put these albums together. I don't know how he does it.

  • "You dont go see a new movie come in the middle and then watch the end and go have a shit" hahaha love it!!! Trent can do no wrong!!

  • " you dont go to a movie half way though, leave to go take a shit and come back" buahahahaha! Trent rules.

  • He should just not split his albums in tracks. Just have it as one track, if it is meant to be heard all together.

  • Very interesting to see how Trent's opinion of the Internet and "stealing" music has changed in these past few years since this interview.

  • i agree in that i hope future bands record albums like an audio journey where as it wouldnt be the same just playing a couple songs from the album every now and then Only, but like the whole album should flow together like a little movie..then albums would be exciting again!

  • You gotta love the Swedish public TV. "There is no fucking you, there is only me" is not censored as "there is no fffffffffffffff you"

  • @stakleni00 censorship is an awful thing ;)

  • yeah i like listening to a album as a whole like he said

  • me gusta..me gusta..pero me gustaria mas si le entendiera...

  • 3:23

He's wearing an all-inclusive bracelet.I've watched it so many times and didn't see it until now.Amazing!

  • god damn trent is ripped in this time era. he could do MMA!! haha trent reznor as an MMA fighter...bad ass!

  • haha eazy and nwa

  • I buy your albums Trent. =)

  • did it fucking skip closer wtf is wrong with this video??!

  • All the dangerous in rock left with hip hop. No offense to rap but hes right

  • Hahah I love it how they show a clip from a Will Smith video when he talks about angry black males :D :D

  • Trent is absolutely right.. According to what he said about ' listening to the entire record'' Thats pRETTy hate machine right there buddy! all the way thru! Each and every song!

  • What the fuck? It says "Broken" at 0:45? Stupid butt munchers... Hell, at least all NIN fans KNOW it's "Wish"!

  • maybe he was referring to the ep?

  • Yeah, I know what you mean, but all the included music videos had the appropriate song titles except Wish. That annoyed me a little XD

  • Ahh - The 1st time I listened to With_Teeth I put the CD in - dimmed the lights, laid back and put on my headphones.

1st listen beginning to end and I had the FU@#*(@# random setting ON

    FAIL

  • epic!

  • This poses the question, what music does he listen to?

  • @chromosomedivide david bowe, queen both inspired him.

  • 320 Kbps Varibale bit rate mp3s, have not reached Trent's Ipod.

  • dude.. cds suck compared to records.. he is wrong about that.. but he is still so cool

  • its not about hip hop or rock in general....

he talks about an developement in music history.

you can't say that hip hop sucks....you can only say, that its kinda sad what has become to that music.

but look at all the other genres. listen to some chart rock. its gunna suck at least as much. there is still good music on every gerne...but its not much, cuz the companys support good selling shit

  • haha, Trent is amazing

  • Fuck hip hop. Its so dumb. Its for people with IQ's of 47 or lower. The type of people who only focus on primal urges. FUCK HIP HOP

  • In the 80's , musically, hip hop was progressive, but then again rock used to be good too.

  • @sykopus You should type in Matty Light, I think you'll actually like it. I hated hip hop until I found those guys, Usher has nothing on them.

  • Hi this is a black kid talking rap dus suck I realy hate it. nine inch nails rocks . rap macks no senes and trent is righ it crap. trent you rock

  • Its so funny that they talk about hiphop being dangerous, with a black man pointing a gun at you, and then they show Will Smith for like half a minute! I love Scandinavians.

  • You didn't hear the rest of what he said? Allow me to quote Mr Reznor once again:

"hip hop ... has become so incredibly stale ... some of that music out now is the worst music ever."

I.e., hip hop Was dangerous, but copycats turned it into crap. Smith being one of them ;)

  • Dude, I thought the Scandinavians were saying Will Smith was one of the dangerous black men. That would have been so funny

  • Haha, ok!

Well, Smith could be dangerous to us, who knows what he'd do if he got here?! LOL!

  • @baramartin Will Smith scares me.

  • @jw8945 listen again, hear what he actually said, then comment

  • @937emotion Thanks mom

  • @jw8945 It's a pretty bad example. Will smith was never about pretending to be a gangster, he and Jeff were always about party type of hip-hop, rhyming about girls, parties, school, parents, everyday stuff. They never claimed they were dangerous.

A better example would have been 50 Cent, Lil whine, Souljah boy, Chamillionaire and all those other buttplugged wannabe gangstah's, Sellout rappers that went pop.

  • They skipped Closer in the video part. Was Closer banned there in Sweden or something?

  • Well, they couldn't include all the videos there, right? ;)

No, it wasn't banned in Sweden. We still had MTV Europe back then (1995) (before getting MTV Nordic most of the time), and the only thing 'banned' in the video was the F-word (I think).

No beep, just silence instead ("I wanna ---- you like an animal"), just like on the radio edits of the song.

Not sure about our other channels though, silence or not, but no ban that I can recall.

  • Yea, but Closer is kind of the quintessetial nin video I thought. Also Trent Reznor himself had said it is one of, if not his favorite video. I just thought by showcasing his videos in that segment it was odd closer was not in the lineup. But thank you so much for that information. We also had an edited version that bleeped the F word and some of the images as well as cut the song down in lenghth.

  • Hm, yes, I have no idea why they picked the videos they did. I think Head Like A Hole must be NIN's most played video here, then maybe Closer, so they should have shown it. But the clips in this interview were quite short anyway, probably because of lack of time.

  • Interesting that Head is like the most played there. Maybe another American can correct me if I am wrong but Head didn't get much attention other then radio. I think the video was all but forgotten here. Closer & Perfect Drug is what I would wager were the favorite videos here. Hurt was a biggie here but I don't remember the video getting much air time. Hurt was also big with other artists like Cash and Stephen King. I understand the time issue. Wasn't big issue either was just wondering.

  • No worries! Any interesting conversation is always welcome! :)

I might be wrong about the most played videos though... it could be that I just watched Head more times than the rest, or just happened to catch it more times, lol! I don't know where to find the statistics for this either... could've been interesting! :)

But I guess Head was kind of a new thing back then, and a kind of "instant hit", easily accessible to most people.

  • Oh for sure. You know I fell in love with nin in jr high when me and my friend were looking through his older brother's cds. We came across Pretty Hate Machine and we coudn't even get past track one because I kept insisiting we play Head Like A Hole over and over. Ha-ha.

  • No, it's a perfectly good question. Major labels are ruining music.

  • what a stupid question at 1:23 !!!!!

  • trent is so fucking cool. nin is my 2nd fav band. my 1st is marilyn manson

  • down in it is my fav rap song

  • hahaha. why is will smith in that clip? lol

  • just listen to Trent:

"hip hop ... has become so incredibly stale ... some of that music out now is the worst music *ever*."

-that's probably why Will is there! ;)

  • I think music right now is the worst it has ever been in America.

  • Agreed.

  • Yes, you're right!

Maybe they put the ep:s name there instead by mistake? (Wish is on Broken)

Or maybe they meant the Broken Movie, where the Wish video can be seen?

Either way, it 'should' have been the song's title here, not the ep or video! :)

  • trent is fucking awesome

  • Comment removed

  • Keep vinyl and cds aLIVE mp3s are shit!!!! Revive rock and roll, fuck the corporations. }:-D

  • fucking stupid interviewer as usual. im glad Trent turned his stupid question around 1:18

  • you are dead on great comment, nin are on of my fav bands, been a fan since i was 14

  • ahaha im 14 now n i looove nin

  • The thing that strike me as I watch this interview is his unmistakable intelligence, and, strangely for someone who creates such mind-bending music: common sense.

Those two are probably the reason this man still stays on top of his game after two decades.

  • Aw, I miss the old Trent. Lol, the Pale (sp?) skinny guy. Hotness.

  • "You don't go see a new movie, and, come in in the middle, and then watch the end, and go out, and take a shit, and come back, and..."

    Priceless.

  • Hurt was the year I was born!

  • Fuck you, trippy.

  • Trent speaks for all of us. just wow

  • Trent's right about hip-hop, I like hip-hop too, but nowadays it's all about rumshakers and poppin' Cristal. Doesn't make me think. I'm glad TR is still rockin the pants off everybody so they can wake up to reality!

  • I agree if you are talking about the mainstream scene, ala 50cent, which I think Reznor seems to be referring to mainly here. But there are some fascinating underground hip hop artists, the likes of MF Doom, Dalek, Kool Keith, Saul Williams etc. And I think Reznor knows this, probably why he just produced Saul Williams new record.

  • I agree with him

  • He's a living genius there rare Today It's refreshing

  • He has a whole new neck because he probably replaced the drugs and alcohol with working out. I am glad that he is off that crap and that it didn't take away his unique ability to grasp the dark side in all of us. I also love that he doesn't discuss the meaning of a song..he lets the listener determine their own meaning - much like a good author.

  • he has sacrificed a chin for a whole new neck

  • will smith as "dangerous"? i don't get it now LOL

  • he looks like a trucker bro in this one. or your average middle american

  • MP3's do have bad sound quality. A lot of people brag about how many songs they can hold on their mp3 player, but there's a reason for it. Because it sounds like crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Today has some of the worst music ever! It's just plastic, fake, and stale.

  • And the music just keeps gettin worse.....=(

  • Trent is as interesting as his music; very inspirational.

  • I was never a big Nine Inch Nails fan, but he is a smart dude and a visionary... someone to listen to.

  • I think he looks yummy in that hat. :-)

  • i wonder what trent would say if i just walked right up to him and licked him...

  • the same thing about

limp bizkit,"what the fuck is this this?"

  • Lol. Maybe the best interview i've seen lol.

  • he has just expressedevery problem i have with this whole online music thing

u cant hold the art and the presentation of it all it deminished.

not to mention cds sound better than an mp3 lol

  • you can see he puts effort that alot of other dont. he actually puts time and thought into what he puts out

  • yeah he writes stuff that has meaning unlike all the other bands do

  • Never listened to this guy's music, but he's very interesting.

  • Haha! He looks like a gym teacher with that hat.

  • he does not look good in a hat.

and i kinda object to audioslave being mentioned in a bad light. like them or no, they made quality music.

but that was the interviewers fault. trent is awesome.

  • I think u misinterpreted the question. Listen to Trent's response

  • well, trent didnt trash them, but the interviewer didnt seem to think to highly of them.

  • Yes,after listening to the question again, it does appear that the interviewer was being a bit condescending towards those bands.

  • how old is trent?

  • He's 43.

  • is he?

i thought he was in his 30's!

  • wtf trent kinda looks like sylverter stallon in this interview lol

  • that has gotta be my favorite interview. its been awhile that i noticed the feeling of side a and side b of a record.

  • Damn. Get a load of those guns, He should be called the "Incredible Sulk"

  • LOL!

  • "the incredible sulk" hahahaha;)

  • glad this guy is alive, many years of awesome music.

  • Great interview.

  • Lmao at 5:41-5:47

  • man trent looks intense

  • Dude..Trent liked Hip-Hop what a G man hes just too cool

  • He liked the old school stuff the real hip hop and gangster rap. Not this Mtv bullshit thats pushed and dumped all over us today.

  • amen!!!!!

  • "Scary and dangerous"

    *Will Smith appears on-screen*

    LOL

  • yes, its so funny , LMAO

  • he turned that question around on the interviewer. instead of putting those bands down he took the high road 1:20

  • ahh its okai trent im sure all of us fans have sit and listened to all ur albums at least once through out from start to finish =]

    right guys :P?

  • all the time :E

  • damn right

  • of course

  • yes^^

  • If you look at hip hop for its lyrical content yeah SOME of it does suck, but you've gotta listen to the right hip hop-if you listen to whats on the radio, ofcourse most of that crap lacks substance which people these days feel more comfortable with (inability to confront reality or whatever). But dig alittle deeper and you'll find what your lookin for. BTW that actually goes for all music-i think its stupid to single hip hop out-rock/metal ain't doin so hot either these days.

  • you didn't hear the question he was asked. don't get on the man for answering the question when he was probably asked specifically about hip hop music. the interviewer asks specifically about many genres over the course of the interview; i'd be that the interviewer singled out hip hop. get on his ass

  • i get what he's saying. especially about how a record has 2 sides and u have to flip it over, but with a cd, it just plays. And little things like that change the way u listen to the music.

  • with an ipod you put it on shuffle or listen to the two singles off an album.

  • I currently have EVERY single piece of music Trent has developed on my MP3 to date.

His music gets me through my day, without it I'd be all sorts of angry.

Trent thank you, your music is a gift to us all, much appreciated.

  • I just laughed at the comment on "You don't watch a movie go out and take a shit and come back." The comment on CDs and mp3s is very true. I usually prefur to download 320 kbps or FLAC.Also to you uploaders that are uploading albums. Upload them in full and in good quality!

  • ..so you are only going to take to heart half of what Trent had to say? Let's ignore the part about us not having the right to just outright steal albums but keep the piece where he believes we should listen to quality audio? So that we end up stealing quality audio? Awesome.

  • Trent is Jack'D like Henry Rollins. lol.

  • trent reznor who is nin is indescribably awesome, besides me that is :) the fav of all time 4 me -d

  • man i totally agree with his opinion about mp3 technology

  • Two years ago I sat down and listened to every single NIN cd I owned on my boombox with some headphones.

I completely agree with Trent about the whole music culture thing.

  • not all hip hop is crap, but most of it today is garbage..Luckily Saul is trying to bring it back

  • god has spoken.... Hip hop is the worst music ever.....

  • Trent wasn't trying to say Hip Hop was the worst music ever. Early 80's (Run DMC, Grand Master Flash, etc.), to mid 90's (Tupac, NWA, etc.) was good as he pointed out but the new stuff sucks. Then again almost all 00's music sucks in general.

  • you did hear when he said that he was a fan of hip hop's early days right lol. he's just not a fan of today's commercial hip hop b/c it has no message. that contrasts completely with old hip hop which was centered around conveying messages

  • take a shit lol...I love this man

  • thank you hip hop and rap sucks dick.

  • whoa thats not what he's sayin, he sayin present day hip hop lacks substance which is tru-Compare tupac to kanye.

  • i realize that.

  • i agree man, these days hip hop and rap is made by a bunch of faggots with no talent. all they talk about is the same shit, money, women, cars, and crime. thank god we have musicians like trent reznor who actually do things differently from anyone else in this day and age.

  • Exactly, thank god theres still some people with musical culture left.

  • I sometimes download things just to check them out, then i buy them. I don't have much money to throw around on cds if they suck.

Also DRM is also why i don't use itoons, too much restriction, not enough freedom.

  • not back then but now he wants us to steal his music? *sigh* Trent's such a moody bitch.... if he wasn't so damn wonderful...

  • he says it all in that interview and i dont why iam even commenting....... but yeah

  • This is the first time I've seen him in a hat.

  • Blah, I live in Sweden! How great. I wish there could be iPods with the CDs design and lyrics. It would solve all my problems.

  • Have you delved deep into The Inevitable Rise And Liberation Of Niggy Tardust...on an ipod? :)

  • such a smart man if 1/4 of the world thought like him it would be a much better place

  • Trent's eyes are so pretty <3

  • awesome interview

  • Trent is fucking King! good interview wow total truth about music today

  • Trent reznor<3

  • I still buy cd's regularly, but i always use limewire and youtube and what not to check stuff out first. Its pure logic to want to check something out before wasting another high sum of money as cds are now a days on something you'll listen to once maybe?

  • 5 bucks, is not much to spend on an album you can download on the internet, even if you're checking the album out for the first time.

  • First of all, i never mentioned at all the Niggy Tardust, if that is indeed what you refer to as the five bucks. And i still think you have the right as a listener to make sure what you're paying for, 99 cents, 5 bucks, or 20, to know what it is.

  • First of all, i never mentioned at all the Niggy Tardust, if that is indeed what you refer to as the five bucks. And i still think you have the right as a listener to make sure what you're paying for, 99 cents, 5 bucks, or 20, to know what it is.

  • lol...I love Trent so much i'd almost have sex with him...and I'm completely straight!

    x^D

  • yeah...completley

  • OWNED

  • Older records were of higher quality because recording space was limited, therefore you had to choose the best 8 or 9 songs you had. There wasn't the option of filling it up with 15 mediocre songs. Also, records were really a collection of two acts. Side A and Side B. They were short and complete in themselves. With MP3 that whole grand performance as a whole is broken up. It's like listening to Dark Side of The Moon in shuffle.

  • i agree with him 100% especially about stolen music. i hate listening to songs out of order. i like listening to an entire album the way it was meant to be heard.

  • best trent interview by the way

  • Trent Reznor is the only person that makes sense in the music industry.

  • yeah hip hop music now is soooo bad......seriously!!! rick music now is awesome!!!!!!!!

  • "Before there's any real revolution"... Ahh, well, seems it's here now! XD

  • So right, now all we hear about is Hip-hop and not Rock anymore like someone will listen to a song about bling-bling, hoes and gangstas when they will be in their 60s. I long for this fad to fade and start putting up some REAL music.

  • Thats quite an ignorant statement to make we hear about as much of rock as we do Hip-Hop. Hip hop is only about bling-bling, hoes and gangstas if you only ever watch video hits..there are sounds outside of the mainstream that don't only deal with steriotypes...NIN are amazing because it's a band that manages to not conform to steriotype or be told what to do by there record producer and at the same time manages to release music with a certain substance.

  • Trent has a pretty healthy looking head of hair I doubt he is hiding balding. Besides, balding is a sign of high levels of testosterone (manly). 2nd... See how much hair U have left between 40 and 45 ;P

  • DAMN! hes buff but hot.

  • WTF is he on roids?

  • No he is off heroin.

  • nope he's on unbridled awesomeness.

  • I agree with you and Trent, I moved to the US 7 months ago and have resorted to downloading, recording my own music, and buying records. I only listen to the radio for the traffic report in the morning.

The music is so lacking of any type of content and musical value... I don't know if you've noticed this, but the level of speech has deteriorated so much!! My nieces and nephews are starting to talk the way these people write and talk. English is so rich and it's getting beat up!

  • I think it all has to do with the level of education in the country. People don't realize that culture (music, movies, art) molds the collective consciousness & identity of a society.

Limiting early & meaningful exposure (meaning years 0-12) to proper art training provides for poor judgments when you're older, therefore decreasing the quality the populous demands in its art helping to alienate it from the world.

Ignorance & lack of world perspective is easier to mold and deceive.

  • hey u fuker i come from america and i know the real culture. go see a fucking american movie and youll see the true real longstanding american way. hahah you fuking idiot

  • Just because I wasn't born in the continental US, doesn't mean I haven't experienced the cultural side of the US.

If you notice, my dear, we're talking about popular music, which is heard by the 'populus' (hence the term 'popular').

Obviously, as in every country, mine included, there is a well cultured, well read part of society, unfurtunately it isn't the majority.
