a friend of me had a poster of bono in his room and i asked who bono was and he was like :O u dont know, because he grew up with it. the i asked him, do u know marillion? he was like whos that and i had the same exprission on my face as him.
im 16 and i just grew up with marillion so i dont know better :P
I really don't mean to be vulgar, but there's something I don't quite understand about the lyrics, can somone help?
Every time I hear the lines "was I alright? did you come tonight?" I wonder if he's speaking about his sexual prowess and giving her an orgasm... I mean, I'd find it a bit unfitting since it's so explicit, and didn't he imply they never got involved anyway? Or is it meant to be ambiguous? Can any native speaker clarify?
I've always thought that's what Fish was on about. I've always understood about a married man who has what appears to be an ongoing affair with a prostitute, who is apparently in love with him. And he's asking her basically how does he compare in bed to to the her other clients.
I thought Fish had the worst hair style of all persons in this video until I saw Nina :D Just kidding, such a great song! Guess I would trade my full hair for a full beard like Fish's :D
Either 5 people are totally deaf or they suffer spatial awareness and hit the wrong button! To me, this is possibly Marillion at theri very, very finest...
Fish had the worst mullet since me. Luv these guys to death. They had an interesting combo of Euro/American references. BTW rothery's guit is an amazing likeness to Genesis/Floyd...stunning.
When i met fish at a gig a while ago, i didn't know with to shake his hand or lick his face. He's just the epitome of lyrical awesomeness, and also been a massive fan of him since i was 12 :D
The song was released in the US as an A-side though.
paulgrahamscot: Marillion is not a Scottish band. Fish is from Scotland, but the band was formed in Aylesbury, England.
Funny thing about this song is that it is recorded with a drum machine and Steve on bass. Ian and Pete had left, but Fish, Mark and Steve played around with some cords and lyrics after a recording session, and the result is this great song.
(Read this in the book Market Square Heroes from 1987)
Beautiful song, and just as equally beautiful video. I own the double CD version of Misplaced Childhood with the longer version of this song, and the entire album gets heavy rotation on my iPod. Fish is truly a poet; none like him at all.
This was a B-side??? This song got me turned on to Marillion.... Man, albums were the best. I've got a nice collection of them, unfortunately, no Marillion...
I much prefer this version of the song to the one that appears on the Misplaced Childhood remaster. I always found the "dance mix" bits on that version to be superfluous. I mean, like did they seriously think a band championed by Neil on The Young Ones was gonna get dance club airplay or something? LOL
@srecko666 Be careful what you say here......i am a huge Marillion & Fish fan, but b'jeez, Marillion have moved on and now, after years of believing Marillion only existed with Fish, i have now realised that they are getting better and better - please don't comment if you are not prepared to listen to them now......
@bedweld totally agree with you although I though I was never going to like them without Fish I have to admit they're still moving ahead and have a lot to say...and they are still Marillion
@bedweld To me they are two totally different bands. I gave up on them after the truely awful Holidays in Eden. In the past 12 months I've since rediscovered some of the newer stuff and although its ok it has none of the raw passion and power of the Fish era - they sound like middle aged men now ;-)
Yes at the Aud in Buffalo..86-87?? they played the first side of Misplaced Childhood then script for jesters tear and then forgotten sons? they were not orig to open but the guitarists from Kansas backed out and Rush picked up Marillion for the US tour..they were great..not alot of people knew of them ..but Kayleigh was just hitting the airways...i will never forget..
Yes, excellent show here in Chicago in 1986. If I remember right, they played the whole of "Misplaced Childhood" and a couple other songs. Too bad the reaction from the Rush fans was negative. Had they known Rush were big fans, I wonder if the reaction would have been more positive!? Marillion didn't play Chicago on the "Clutching..." tour probably because of the poor response from thier Chicago gig. Soooo.... it was up the road to MIlwaukee!
I saw Marillion with Rush in Montreal during the Power Windows tour. I saw them play the whole Misplaced Childhood. Montreal was in love with them, and I was just a casual fan at the time until I saw that, and then I got obsessed.
@Rushrock B sides what the hell does that mean?, LOL, is that a second ipod I own???, maybe not so funny after all. The state of music so... far off, it's like being nuked with mass media bullshit, guess what...we can't stop the avalanche. Our musical fate is sealed!
@Rushrock Not only that man, the EMI singles boxed set seems to have been taken from vinyl masters. Lady Nina sounds particularly and annoyingly tight, as if compressed for 45 rpm or something like that. By the way, vinyl has never left here ;) And Fish is an incredibly funny and talkative man. I think Marillion has made some great songs with Hogarth but I will never foeget the days of JESTERs TEAR.
This song always bugged me a bit. The drums and I think most of the bass line are clearly sequenced. Strikes me more as something thrown together quickly in the studio with the vocal and guitar overdubbed to make a quick B-side than a real band effort.
The first time I heard this song, it literally took my breath away...I thought Genesis had finally restored Peter Gabriel to his rightful place and kicked ol' Phil to the curb. If you love Marillion, old Genesis, Fish and Peter Gabriel, I beg you to check out "Fayrewether", a Cleveland band who have been around for 30+ yars and whose frontman Paul Fayrewether is nothing short of incredible. Once you see their live performances on YouTube and hear Paul's unbelievable voice, you'll be astounded.
these guys are real good musicians but if i close my eyes its kinda just genesis....i don't know much about these guys as they were never seriously marketed here in the US so if anyone can put me onto something by them that rocks i'd appreciate it. i've heard fish solo stuff with more rock oriented songs but i guess he's been outta the band for years now. this guitarist seem capabile of melting some fretboards.
I appreciate them now more than back at those days. It's like top quality wine, time only makes it better. The rehearsal room looks like the Marquee Studios, anyone knows if it's actually so? Ta.
My favourite Marillion song! I think they should stay away from videos, though, if they arent going to live up to the songs...they songs speak for themselves!
I have to say, as much as their music is some of the best in the decade, their videos were always terrible. At worst the dull visuals undermine the lyrical subtleties of the songs themselves.
I was never much into Fish's obsession with symbolism, either - stuff like the misplaced childhood boy and the album covers. That was just bullshit to me. I think he just clung to it in times of insecurity. He didn't need to bother with any of that crap, the music spoke for itself brilliantly. 80s I guess!
Thats cool if you dont like the Artwork and stuff, but It really supports the music. I think the imagery of FUGAZI and the other albums is brilliant, almost as Brilliant as the music. With the artwork and imagery to go with the songs it makes it an act. What is insecure about it? I dont know what you mean.
The song is about a guy and a prostitute who fall for each other, but he has a wife and family and he is basically saying goodbye to her to go back to his family
....FISH: "I was going through a very bohemian element, you know. I remember hanging about this place called 'Rasputins', which was one of the famous German brothels, and I used to go along and just write there at night with the girls, and talk to the girls, sitting in the red light of the bar. Lady Nina was written there."
mr kelly on keybourds is from dublin the guitarists from whitby fish is scots and there drummer well i don,t know where hes from so the british isles rock i suppose I think thats why they sound so unlike there contemplarys.
This is the song that got me on to Marillion. I was/am a huge Floyd Fan until this guy "Rusty" turned me on to Marillion. This is the song that got me hooked on them. I live in the states so I am disadvantaged when it comes to Marillion...
Tpekhh - must say I don't see a little or indeed a lot of poetic imagery from Mr Dick as any kind of crap, ridiculous, pretentious or otherwise.
Of course you are at liberty to prefer the Spice Girls, Take That or whoever was behind Bob the Builder - but I prefer Marillion and lyrically, the Fish era
Wow! Havent seen this video..I spent the entire day yesterday just listening to this song over and over from the Misplaced Childhood remaster on disc 2..totally blown away!

Can someone help me?
Is it true this song is about a nightclub in Berlin?

This is a quote from an interview with Fish.
....FISH: "I was going through a very bohemian element, you know. I remember hanging about this place called 'Rasputins', which was one of the famous German brothels, and I used to go along and just write there at night with the girls, and talk to the girls, sitting in the red light of the bar. Lady Nina was written there."
