  • this is too awesome. this is the damn cool reason why i started playing bass B-)

  • yéééééééééé man

  • This is fucking crazy. This is how bass has to solo, always keep the groove. So many bassists stop grooving when they solo and then wonder why nobody pays attention. Miller is always in the pocket. His playing is so fucking tight, that is why they call him the best bassist in the world, not because he can slap fast.

  • @1badhorsie What like steve vai and Shawn lane! Lovely music That!!! Am sure you know what music is. I do agree with ya to a certain point a lot of these guys make crap music but the playing's great.....Sometimes!! Some people like chocolate cake some people don't doesn't mean its shit!! Fair doo's to the negative comments tho am sure its a constructive day for you!

  • I just played one of his signature basses at Guitar center the other day.... why didn't it sound like this? lol

  • @gladtobeback01 Most likely Guitar Center didn't have the strings he uses on it, the Guitar Center I went to had really low quality strings on his bass.

  • @cmcnabblss most likely. I didn't adjust any of the settings either, lows were nice but the D & G had absolutely no tone to them. Really smooth comfortable neck tho.

  • Now this is what I call musicianship! Much respect to Marcus Miller for making that Fender Jazz Bass guitar talk.

  • The pimp hand is strong with Marcus Miller....

  • who are those 3 guys who can possibly dislike it???

  • @Woulfy1982 the guys who can't play bass

  • @Woulfy1982 It's called jealousy :-D

  • he's awesome, but just one thing....doesn't he tend to have his solos very often in standard E? (not professional bassplayer, dont know all the names of everything, excuse me.)

  • @Ascoli1898Calcio Well E is definitely the easiest key to slap in IMO, and probably is for Marcus as well because of the lowest open string which you can keep slapping.

  • @jlimproj , once again, I'm not sure bout this, cause im noob at bass so far, but can't he just change to a "bigger" gauge, or what its called?

  • @Ascoli1898Calcio oh wait. what was ur original question? lol..

  • @Ascoli1898Calcio well anyways i don't know if this will answer ur question, but everyone has their own preferences on their gauges, and the reason he's slapping in E in this video is because the song (run for cover) is in E, and im pretty sure most of his songs are in E. Peace

  • @jlimproj , yup, for the first time I actually was right :O :D

  • @jlimproj personally i find if you tune down your E to D then thats easiest.

  • @patrickdasimpkin well, its all up to personal preference =)

  • @jlimproj ayye true. :)

  • is that Dean Brown?

  • what i wanna know is the name of this solo D:

  • @1012pie

Solos dont have names, but the song is called Run For Cover...

  • @prettyboytroy555 Tks thats what i was lookin for

  • lol this solo makes me move left and right like a retard and i just cant stop so funky

  • Marcus is the king of slapping and popping

  • Marcus plays bass like he has a 14 inch dick and is just swinging it around on stage... that's the most succinct way I can put it! ;)

  • 0:24 is awesome

  • such a great thud thump feel!

  • It's really too bad that youtube hasn't figured out that everybody wants a repeat function. I'd play this all day!

  • japanese listeners are really good. they understand when drummer stops in solo.

  • He definatly gets all the ladies

  • father marcus

  • cant get sick of this solo

  • this is what people spent their time on before cod came out.

  • @vinceythefly Your statement goes pretty deep. Think about it, it seems like all new forms of media entertainment are aimed at keeping people away from each other rather than bringing them together. With all the electrical options brought right into everyones living rooms, there is hardly any need to go out other than having a job (and loads of them can be performed in the living room as well).

  • @ReachDeep1 Yes, I understand this. I spent years learning to play piano as a kid. With the new virtual social environment you can interact with lots of people "vocaly" it's one of the only ways that people can afford to socialise on a mass scale. Most of the country is skint, going out of the house costs money.

  • Epic

  • Is that maceo Parker on the sax?

  • Jobbast are you related to onebasshit? The reason i ask is that my comment has seemed to have been turned into this big campaign about who is a baddass bass player and so forth, i guess i could have left that crack head comment out but you guys are missing my whole point.

  • Run for cover, David Sandborn album called Straight to the Heart

  • wow, onebasshit, i don't understand how you could arrive at that conclusion from what i stated. I was just giving my opinion. on a certain technique. Thats whats wrong with the young people today you don't listen to what was said and you try to put you own statements into a paragraph. Why would i be jealous of a marcus miller get real.......................the only pop and slap guy i like is Larry Graham

  • @wreepeet

Marcus is indeed a Badd-ass, saw him live a year ago with the great Stanley Clarke (and Victor Wooten). The guy has that amazing feel to his playing that brings out a smile. But when he's in a group he knows his place. That - to me - is 1 of the key elements of being a musician.

  • i don't know to me poping and slapping is to overdunnit . i personally can get more out of my bass without the technique, don't get me wrong Marcus is a bad boy im more old school , and all that milking and theatricks isn't doing much for me. bass to me is still bottom and the more bottom i get the better ...........all that poping and slapping is for crack heads and pot smokers................

  • @wreepeet translated you just said youre jealous and wish you could play like that...LMAO

  • i don't know to me poping and slapping is to overdunnit . i personally can get more out of my bass without the technique, don't get me wrong Marcus is a bad boy im more old school , and all that milking and theatricks isn't doing much for me

  • hey guys, do you think you all could watch my bass vids and drop some comments on em? id appreciate hearing your thoughts. ill be posting some more vids, so you can subscribe if you want. ill return the favor. thanks!

  • SICK

  • People say whats the point in bass if you cant hear it? I say listen to Marcus or I just say fuck you!

  • he and James Jamerson, the baddest bassists around.

  • so good. pure excellence.

  • This brother is bad to the bone!

  • Why do I have to be so white...?

  • Victor and Les Claypool are very technically talented players, but I don't like their style because they don't play their instrument like a bass.

  • Marcus is the King of em all

  • the best bass solo

  • cleanest bass sound around.true legend!!!

  • One of the many reasons why I love black people!

  • Seoul, Corea!

  • That was Seoul Jazz Festival. Not Japan...

  • As far as style goes i just cant choose between claypool, Vic, marcus or flea... lol theyre all so great

  • chris wood

  • Don't forget Jaco!

  • id say i like claypools style

vic and marcus for their soul

and i just idk y i just fuckin hate the way flea plays and sound.

but dont get me wrong hes good. i just dont like him.

  • @Breathor ain't that the truth. ken genis.

  • @Breathor You don't have to choose one. Enjoy them all.

  • @Breathor flea is awesome probably the best but victor wooten is a little too good i think flea is best

  • @Jordo1900

Flea has a lot of power, he used to slap real sloppy rythm wise, don't know if he fixed that since he was doing some musical study ...

I'd go with Dexter Redding, the writer of The Awakening, my favourite slap song and his version is better than Claypool IMO.

  • @MrEvilCooky yea he used to be 100x's better at slapping around the years 1988-1996 but then they kinda got more into soft kinda songs but on the songs Tell Me Baby, Cant Stop & Hump De Bump he uses some fairly awesome slap basslines

  • @Jordo1900

I know I know, but my point is that the lines were awesome because of the power he gets out of the lines, the power sort of makes up for his sloppy timing and because of the sloppy timing I don't think he is the best.

  • @MrEvilCooky Cool man, I think its good that he's not TOO perfect but I respect your opinion dude

  • @Breathor Dude, you can't forget Jaco!

  • @Breathor don't forget Bootsy

  • @Breathor IMO they are the top 4 bassists, with Steve Clark being number 5. While I personally like rock bassists like John Enwistle, John Paul Jones, Steve Harris, and Geddy Lee better, and while I think those guys can do the straight finger style better, they can't do the jazz bass thing like Les, Vic, Flea, Marcus, and Steve.

  • he's not only playing the bass! He's having sex with it! now that's musicianship.

  • Marcus compared to Vic there is no cmparison its all about whats your flavor. No doubt Vic is the baddest stand alone bass player out there. Marcus is one of the baddest that I love to hear with a band playing a solo.

  • he really got the groove. great player...

    respect.

  • his skills makes me to respect the bass even more no matter how great of other bassists out there in whom plays it well. its wonderful to watch the various styles for playing n i'm highly impressed with Marcus's flavor. being a guitarist n all i'm finding it more important everyday to just jump on the bass to get my own feel of it. i'm tired of just playing a funky bass line here n there, but then fail to embrace it fully to learn. Marcus got me amplified now. i still love James Larry n Bootsy.

  • lol, he's deep in the ju-ju, so is the Saxman

  • Marcus has equaled Vic for ME. He's more to my taste both as a composer and player. Vic gets a lot more ethereal and mental in his playing, and can be a bit repetitious at times, but Marcus to me is more consistently plain old FUNKIN soulful. Still, when Vic shines, when he gets in your heart and soul - DAMN!

  • mm. with all the slap and pop he does, I don't think marcus has really given himself the opportunity to show he can equal vic. Not that there's anything wrong with slap, I love it. It's just I don't think it has the capacity for the range of expression that vic can get with fingerstyle. I have no doubt marcus is - at least techncially - just as talented as anybody else out there, though.

  • For sure, when Marcus does give us the finger :) he's as good as any. Also I should add that Marcus has impressed me as a better overall composer - there have been sooo many classic tunes by others that I'm only now realizing were written by MM. Amazingly, I went through the 80s never knowing who he was.

  • Damn! I love Marcus!

And btw: 0:52. God damn I live for cutouts like that. Mmm!

  • I love how in-the-pocket this groove is! He isn't getting too flashy or technical, but DAMN this is FONKY.

  • i like marcus more than victor. but maybe thats all because of his days with miles.

  • Amazing.

One day he will be as good as me!

    Kidding ;)

  • lol... that is fucking easy to play :O

    Just kidding ^^

    Love it! :D

  • This guy is by far the coolest bass player I have ever seen...

  • Amen

  • my 2nd favorite bassist of all time... :)

  • 2nd only to victor wooten? cuz that's my lineup :D

  • EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING!!! :O

  • very chill video.

  • Jesus christ!

  • sweeeeeeet!

  • I saw him live on the SMV tour. Sounds ever better in person.

  • I have started watching this vid everyday when i get in from college. It is so good its untrue. Thuis is how the bass should sound.

  • miller kicks ass

  • I think its on his ''M2'' album. I'm not 100% sure.

  • @PimpSugarWater I think it is 'Run For Cover' that was written for David Sanborn.

  • @PimpSugarWater It's Run for cover from David Sanborn's album Straight to the heart
