One idea: I bought a pet carrier at a doggie boutique for my small pet - she loves to go inside of
it becuase she knows it means we are going out together - I also bring a towel in a bag to wrap her in (head showing)so when we are in approriate places for her to be out, I can hold her, cuddle her close and away we go.
That's what i thought!! I was thinking shipping from US, but I thought it wouldn't be good for them... IF you heard or know any Canadian(ontario) prairie dog's owner/breeder, let me know~ Thx for ur help;)
Where can I get them? Do you know any place in Canada/Ontario? I tried everywhere! I tried to find on online (kijiji/ rescue organization, etc) but its not there.. :(
@Lovergirl8176 They are legal in Canada at this time but due to a temporary ban there don't seem to be any active breeders. We know of one individual in Canada who obtained a couple males as pets by importing, a long and expensive process. Many people don't know it is possible to see wild prairie dogs in Canada at Grasslands National Park.
@Lovergirl8176 I can't think of anything comparable. They're somewhere between a dog and a devious two year old. Researchers recently discovered wild prairie dogs communicate with a language of many words. Still wild animals, they may be eager to please one day, then defiant the next. Jack in the video is a sweetheart but I wear shoes in the house because sometimes, when I tell the other one 'No', he comes after me. One needs to be prepared for and appreciate such spirit and independence.
@MsHorselover8 I would but I don't mind having a few scars to show for it. They can be fiesty at times and aren't ideal for everyone. Ours are essentially wild animals who happen to live with us but that's also one of the reasons I like them so much. If you don't find trouble entertaining stick with a hedgie. =)
I love this video, it's inspired me to purchase a prairie dog as my own. I was wondering though, where would I get one? I've been searching everywhere with no luck. I live south of St. Louis, Missouri and I was just really looking for a little baby to call my own, and to spoil rotten lol. Any advice as to where to get a pet prairie dog I would appreciate it SO much. (: Thanks in advance.
@NikkiBoom1 No idea about dealers in your area but you might search on prairie dog rescue organizations. There are plenty of rescues looking for good homes.
Hi!! He is very good. I have cat and it seems they can be good friends... Ijust wonderig were they going to toilet??- in 1 place? and its save to let him to live in house, he not gona desroy anything?? i just want to know before i deside to get one, i realy love them but i first reserching i can give him a good life... thanks...
@dzindole If kept in a cage, they'll eliminate in the cage. When out ours like to go alongside the toilet but you never know. When they aren't kept in cages they can be very destructive. If they can reach it, it's theirs. They can also injure or even kill themselves due to falls or chewing on power cords. I'm so glad you're considering the needs of the animal first. A cage with lots of supervised exercise/bonding time out of it works well for many.
We actually do have two but little Jack is a daddy's boy. If my door is closed he'll scratch at it for hours. When I let him in he'll sit on the bed and 'yahoo' until I crawl under the covers with him. When we do leave we often come back to find him looking anxiously out the windows trying to figure out where we are. They are incredibly smart and can get into and chew just about anything.
i was thinking about getting one but right now im at school for 8 to 6 hours but when i come home i know i would spend hours of time with him/her. do you think that would be ok or should i not get one? i want to make sure he doesnt get depressed.
@2138red They are extremely social. Since we got him there's been someone to keep him company 24/7. If he's kept in a cage he'll bite the bars to get out and find us continually. This can lead to a potentially fatal tooth problem called 'odontoma'. As a result the cage sits around unused and he's with one of us all the time like a little lapdog. Ok, more like a little three year old. Many people who are gone most of the day get two to keep each other company. Cages can work better with two too.
@2138red I waited years to get one because my situation wasn't right. If you ever do end up in the right situation you sound like an ideal adopter of a prairie dog because you obviously consider their needs first instead of expecting them to be what you want them to be. Kudos to you.
@gphx haha thanks right now i really want a pet and the reason why i am asking questions is because i do want to give my pet the best life i can give it. and i held one in a pet store yesterday and thought it was the most adorable little thing and was really considering getting one but i like to research things first before taking action. If i have any other questions on them though i am going to ask you since you own one. :)
hes cute! I just got my first PD this spring and I was afraid of him at first, then I learned they open their mouths for communication and not to bite, since the second day I got him I have been in love with him! What a great great pet, so very social though! Its great that I can let him run around the house and he doesn't hide like a rat would. I have some videos of him and my other pets under my name, Mulder81605 you should check them out!
I wouldn't recommend it. Not only would it probably run away but it's being exposed to predators. Prairie dogs are highly curious and will do things like chew on electric wires which have to be removed or they'll be electrocuted. They also require a ton of social interaction. If you require a pet that requires little attention choose another for both your sakes.
@TrueSurvivalist At our local shop they were about a couple hundred bucks. They can be willful and some bite at times. It is a good idea to be prepared for that possibility.
What awesome pets! I wanted something a bit more portable than Pepper but I've fallen head over heels with her. I'm sure she'd like to meet your furry friends! (she's very gentle)
I'd been looking for years then the ban was enacted. They were wrongfully implicated in a disease that turned out to be in Gambian pouch rats so it was lifted. Our local pet store had him. Many stores can special order by request. Baby rodents tend to be available in spring only so now is primetime.
can i buy them near wisconsin?
